out of state for texas schools

Yeah, even with six int's your situation is a little tenous. Not necessarily bad though. How did you "improve" your app for this year? You'll find out soon your position in Tx...mcg is really the big target...if they'd at least tell you something.

Not tons I'm afraid to say. Of course I rewrote my P.S., I think it's loads better than last year, I had people edit it for me and made a couple versions where last year I made one draft, edited it myself didn't allow anyone to read it and shipped it off to amcas. Secondary essays had more thought in them as well. The only real thing of substance I did was my research, and the presentation I made at a conference earlier in the month. I should have brought up my mcat, but I didn't (if in the unfortunate situation where I'd have to apply again that would be top priority). I'm not really sure I had time to do much else honestly. The research took up most of my time, and by the time I started wrapping it up a few weeks ago, I'd already done my interviewing. What do ya think?

I was looking at that page, if you're just going by the stats it looks like behind mcg ut san antonio is my next best shot. It's almost laughable the odds of oos getting into houston or A & M unfortunately. utmb is somewhere in between.

I think they screwed up on that site. It looks to me that they divided # of matriculants by the # of apps and ints. They should have used the # of acceptances offered in the numerator🙄. That means though that the two "accepted" stats and the odds are artificially low🙂.

MCG and Mercer have to be your best bets obviously. MCG probably accepts a higher %, but it looks like they weren't convinced on first glance, and on paper you're much more competitive at Mercer. Still lots of time for Ga. For Tx at this point, you first have to make some waitlists, and then hope someone drops. You're competing for very few spots. Don't know for sure, but at public schools in other states the stats for oos are higher than instates...so probably the same here. All that math is beatin' ya down, BUT there are lots of intangibles so its hard to have or lose hope haha.

It's got to be all about your MCAT, unless you picked your nose during your int. Did anyone ask why you didn't retake it? Did you continue volunteering/shadowing? The research is nice, but an MCAT of say 30+ would have been waaay better.

If you were instate Tx and your 6 ints were as well you'd have been in by Feb 1 somewhere.

So I called UTMB just now and talked to some dude... I asked him if OOSers were looked at separately from ISers in regards to a waitlist. He put me on hold for like 5 minutes and then came back to tell me that everyone is reviewed equally. I asked if he knew in years past if any OOSers get off the waitlist and he said he didn't know.

Boo. 👎

Yeah I was wondering, because the mcat averages aren't right as far as I know for mercer and mcg. Their own sites say their averages were 26 and 29.9 respectively. Not a huge diff, but a point down.

So as far as the interviews I only picked my nose once or twice, you know just like I would on a first date  I just wonder when it comes to the mcat (I think this has come up before), they knew my score coming in, and the interviews seemed to all go well (some extremely well) so it seems crappy that that is the reason I'm getting looked past. It only really came up at A & m anyway, and it was me who accidentally brought it up when the guy asked me what I thought the weak part of my application was. He didn't really fixate on it either so I don't know...

I guess I'm just going to have to wait and see where it all goes. Problem is that if I wanted to go for all the mcat stuff again to be ready early next time around I'd have to start pretty soon, but I have a moderate chance with at least a few of the schools I'm waiting on, so....👎

Sheesh, we should entrust national secrets to admissions offices...nobody could break that code. And I haven't seen any dudes in admissions...hmmmm.

Well, they don't just use the MCAT as an int screen. They certainly use it to rank applicants for acceptance. Otherwise there'd be little difference in MCATs between acceptees and interviewees. MCG looks semi-competitive. I think you've got a good shot there, you'll just be picked later on in the process as they go down the list and as the bigshots peel off to Emory et al. Yeah, you've got a nice chance at two schools for sure so it'd be hard to muster up the stuff to study for an MCAT haha.

One of the ladies there probably looked on the caller ID and saw it was lacrosse (yes they have a caller ID that somehow recognizes SDN names), and disguised her voice put her on hold for a while, to make her think she was checking then gave her some B.S.

See what I thought, was that they saw me on caller ID and grabbed the closest person to them and was like here talk.

Sigh....I hate politics. Used to love it growing up. Seemed exciting untill I realized that the people who shout the loudest usually have the least to say. I do care of course, and I've been known to enjoy a good debate myself, but reading the main Tx thread reminds me why this one has become my favorite....no politics, trolls, MD vs DO, Athiests vs theologians, x vs y, butter vs margarine, etc. Just coziness, good humor, and a couple of psychotically desperate premeds. Thanks guys😍

That's a cheek in tongue complement if I've ever heard one...or is tongue in cheek...never really got the saying down 😳

 hahaha, problem is what are we going to do with the oos texas thread if none of us get into texas schools???

Well, if that happens, you'll be oos permanently.😛

Well, if that happens, you'll be oos permanently.😛

Unfortunately I would think that this thread and I would have to see other people. Me, a nice pretty GA thread that wouldn't hurt me so  As I'm sure the oos texas thread could find new wide eyed applicants to violate with teases and false hopes :meanie:

1 week till match = a bit over a week till waitlists

1 week till match = a bit over a week till waitlists

Then about another week after that rejections. 👎 You know earlier on I think I would have preferred a rejection just to end the finality, but now would take the waitlist just to keep the hope alive.

At least you and I have an interview coming up, which should at least take our minds off the upcoming doom for a bit 🙂

So is there a waitlist for out of state? How does it work

So is there a waitlist for out of state? How does it work

We're pretty certain, though not positive by any means. Letters should be mailed sometime soon after the instate match. From the schools I've talked to oos are kept separate from instate. Personally I'm just going to wait and see if I get any waitlists then ask the schools for specifics about them. Goodluck :luck:

Any news to report???

I saw some more people getting rejections in the mail in the texas thread. It's funny I've developed like a sixth sense for when the mailman is coming. I can seriously tell when he's coming even before he gets on my street. Then the anxiety builds and my heart races as I check the mail only to get a credit card solicitation. And I can't say for certain but I think the guy has been going through my mail and pulling out my acceptances! :beat:

No news here... all I get in the mail are my roommates magazines and today a W2 form showing me that I work waaaaay too many hours and don't get paid enough. Quite lovely.

Oh, but I did bake this awesome 2 layer chocolate fudge cake tonight (my boyfriend is quite spoiled). myKudu, see what you could get if you could just slip into the admissions office one night and add my name to the acceptance list?

And I can't say for certain but I think the guy has been going through my mail and pulling out my acceptances! :beat:

I've had the same problem. I never got my acceptances to Harvard, Stanford, or Duke. Come to think of it, I never got letters back from the Nobel Prize committee or Jerry Jones (about the QB position). And I'm still waiting on a parcel from the Academy Awards. Stupid USPS.

Uhhh…there's about to be a kudu shaped hole in every obstacle between me and the admissions office. I dunno though…what would your boyfriend think about you baking cakes for another man? I mean, he's got a good 10 lbs on me haha. Well, more than that by now if your cakes are as good as your brownies.

 I didn't get my acceptance to harvard either...I mean I didn't apply but they should have sent me an acceptance anyway!

See my w2 doesn't usually look so bad, but it's depressing because I have no money...so the question is where is it going??? I'm still suspecting the mail man 😛

Well he knows I love to bake, and since he wouldn't be there, I would just tell him I had to bake for someone or I'd go crazy. And, as much as he loves all of the cakes, brownies, and cookies I make for him, he doesn't gain a pound. The man ate 30 chocolate chip cookies I made him in 2 days, but nothing. While baking them I probably gained a pound 👎

haha I know where mine is going... I remember what my checking account looked like last year at this time and its about the same this year... Yes, I pretty much spent a whole year's worth of money on the application process. Double thumbs down to you applications 👎thumbdown

Haha...don't hate. When I quit my job awhile back they gave me a half sheet chocolate cake with the whipped icing. I took about 70% of it home and it was gone by the next day. No increase in diameter detected…Booyah!

Have you tried your hand at divinity? Let's just say mine didn't taste quite right or look much like the pictures. A coworker told me I'd invented a new type of marshmallow (which aren't in the recipe BTW).🙄

Yeah you have to watch out, sometimes you get osmosis of fat and sugar through the skin, I'd wear surgical gloves next time you're baking. This one girl I know tripped while carrying a tray of double chocolate chip cookies, and her but landed right on top of them when she hit the ground. Funnily enough when she stood back up the cookies were gone and her rear had doubled in size 😕 In some rare cases the calories are actually able to leap from the plate to your eyes straight to your stomach completely bypassing the digestive tract 😛

So we just went to see Juno (so good by the way) and on the car ride there, all he could talk about was the cake haha. We were back at his house before going to dinner and his roommate came out of the room and was like oh my gosh, the cake... so see, myKudu, I wasn't lying... just make your way into the admissions office now. And add dd as well while you're at it.

Uh-huh....my BS meter is starting to flare up. Either...

1. You're absolutely entering the wrong career and will end up hiding your culinary light from the world. Great cooks do more for the world than great docs🙂.
2. You're adding ingredients that probably are or should be regulated by the DEA.
3. You're full of it.
4. If you have an older sister, I need her # asap.

1. I wouldn't want to go to culinary school because they make you make all this fancy stuff that no one likes to eat anyway. I really started enjoying baking over the past year since I had surgery that made me not able to play lacrosse/exercise (today was the first day I could run in over a year... it was glorious!! My legs feel like jello... I love it), so that was my stress relief. Plus, why not make my fellow classmates happy while we go through tough years together?
2. I did put sour cream in the cake... how weird is that, I know... but I'm sure that can't hurt ya too much.
3. Full of wonderful baking skills, agreed.
4. Only a brother... but he's not bad looking... haha.

1. Haha…so true. Ouch…sucks you couldn't play your game. If I may be so bold, what happened? Sounds….major🙁.
2. %%$*&*#!!??? Well, as long as the secret to your brownies isn't "eye of newt".
3. Have you tried divinity or some similar confection, or do you mostly stay in the realm of heartier fare?
4. Sorry, I have no plans to expand my horizons in that direction😛.

1. It actually wasn't major is the thing... but it turned into a hassle. I had a pilonidal cyst (right on top of the tail bone). The doctors told me that if I had surgery on it, it would reduce the chance of it recurring to 10%. So I had the surgery back in January, and after the stitches came out, the whole wound opened back up. So for 8 months I went to different doctors trying to have them close up the skin (yes, I had a huge open wound for that long) and I got really fed up w/ my surgeon cause she was super arrogant and didn't even seem like she wanted to help me. I found a wound care specialist and she taught me how to teach someone to pack the wound (my boss at athletic training did it... super awkward haha... my butt became a spectacle for many of my eager to learn coworkers) and everything was looking great until August when the cyst came back... 10% chance... right. So, it's finally closed up, and I'm hoping that it won't haunt me yet again! As much as it sucked, I met a new doctor from it, shadowed him, got a sweet rec from him, and not too shabby of a PS from it 👍
2. No weird stuff in the brownies... just a little TLC 😛
3. haha just the heartier fare... for now.
4. I don't think he does either... plus I dunno if he could deal w/ the long distance

1. OOhhhhh noooooo. So…many…one-liners. Too….easy. Must….reestraain…..sarcasm. Only kidding Lacrosse. I hope people (especially your brother, even though it is his job) didn't give ya too much grief. Wow, that's a long time for an open wound. Was it very painful? I mean, could you sit down ok? What do they think chance of recurrence is now? I hope that surgeon isn't affiliated with the med school haha. So your PS was about how your boss packed your butt? No wonder you're doing well this cycle🙄. (Sorry, I just looked it up and the rules clearly state I'm allowed one crass attempt at low brow humor in this case without losing any class🙂.)
2. Whew…
3. Bread?
4. I'm thinking the further the distance the better in this case😀.

1. Ohhh trust me... I've heard quite a few jokes about it. I had pretty high spirits throughout the whole thing though, so nothing brought me down too much. Yeah, it was painful at times. Nothing worse that the first time I had to get it lanced though. They didn't give me enough local lidocaine, so I felt every cut, every scrape. They make a small incision and then clean about 2 inches up... not pleasant. And then, I had to drive home after that haha. I have a much higher pain tolerance now because of it I'd like to think. Can't help but be optimistic about it. I don't even want to think about it coming back... I've paid my time. And my PS was about relationships we build w/ doctors, not the relationships everyone else makes w/ my back side
2. Since it looks like my luck is not good down there at UTMB, you might not see this TLC...
3. If you mean can I make it... yes sir, I can. I make a mean banana bread and cinnamon bread.
4. I'll agree w/ you on that one.

On a side note... I just got "inducted" into the MU '39 Class of 2008 (that senior award I was telling you about)... it was the coolest ceremony. Definitely something that I will always remember about this school. We have to fill out this profile sheet so they can talk about us at the banquet we have in 2 weeks and one of the questions is "What will you miss most when you leave MU?" I feel like answering... Um, I might be here for another 4?

1. Ouch…they scraped it? Should have dropped an M80 firecracker in there, turned out the lights, and been done with it while celebrating a national holiday. Sure, a little bit of scarring, but lets see that punk come back then. Ain't got no time for scrapin'🙄. And what's with their cheapo pain management? Pffft…I would have whipped out my insurance card (aka my Visa) and said, "Morphinate me!!". Hopefully you've seen the last of that crap.
2. 🙁
3. Screw it. I'm gonna learn how to bake. There's just too much goodness that comes out of an oven.

That's really a big honor. Congrats. How do you get nominated for that? If a med school rejects you with that on the app, it's got issues. Ok, be honest…you cried didn't you😛? Sheesh, I bet the undergrads end their sentences with "m'lady" when talking to you haha.

Scraping... yes haha. The doctor that helped me at the beginning w/ the taking out of the Wic, the cleaning (he's an older doc and still loves his hydrogen peroxide... feel the burn baby), and the repacking always gave me little pats on the butt when he finished... which was totally awkward haha. The worst was having to drive back to STL from school to go see this surgeon after the wound opened back up. She claimed what she was doing was working, but it didn't do anything. The tissue was growing back from the inside out, and so there was excess, so they would take silver nitrate sticks to burn it off... yep, scraping, hydrogen peroxide, now burning haha. I remember the last time I went, the nurse did it for me, and then asked if I wanted to take some of the sticks home w/ me so I could do it myself. I asked her how she was going to give me these sticks to take home, and she was like um, in a little bag? I was like wow... silver nitrate is light sensitive you *****. Maybe thats why I stopped going there

My lab mentor sent me the application for it. Since I just found out about it, it wasn't on any of my apps. If I get a WL from UTMB, I'll probably send an update letter w/ that in it. And when I'm drooling over Rochester, maybe I'll be able to tell them too. No, I didn't cry! Who do you think I am?? haha. No one calls me m'lady, but everyone in my lab now calls me "39" after the name of the award. I think the coolest thing about the ceremony was that we walked over to our Quad and there is a building that has a very old bell at the top which only rings on 3 occasions during the year, and this was one of them. It made me smile a ton cause its something not many people get to hear. Makes me never wanna leave this place...

Congrats lacrosse that's an awesome award, I would definitely include that in updates to schools 👍

So I'm having kind of a tough day filled w/ way too many thoughts. I was sitting in my Developmental Psych class this morning... way boring... how many times do I honestly need to hear about the scientific method??... so I started thinking. Bad idea, I know. I had almost convinced myself about MU over GW, but what if I'd be happier at GW? I've been going back and forth about it. I just need to do really well at this Rochester interview in 2 weeks... but even then I'm nervous since it will probably be interviewing for the waitlist.

I wanted to send some letters of interest to a couple schools I haven't interviewed at yet, but I'm not quite sure how I want to format them. I also figure I'll wait to see if I even get a waitlist from UTMB to send them one... or should I do it now? Ugh.

But thanks dd!!

I've seen on here that a few people who'd sent letters to schools they were trying to interview at had marginal success, so it probably couldn't hurt. The format just seems to be why you want and should go to their school, why you'd be a good fit there, and then your updates.

I'm kind of curious as to the effectiveness of letters of interest. It seems they have very little effect until actually being waitlisted, and even then I wonder. I've been considering doing a letter of intent to my top school and will probably do letters of interest to the others if I'm waitlisted for the heck of it.

Know anything about how utmb handles the letters interest and intent mykudu?

Haha, the only redeeming value I can see in that whole episode is that it's something you can look back on and laugh at…and of course get a PS from. I've had appendicitis and a kidney stone. Neither were very fun, and I had to drive myself as well, so I feel ya. With the appendicitis I would make myself vomit just to take the edge off the pain for 30 seconds or so, and had to convince the ED staff to give me something stronger than Toradol for it…eventually after a couple of hours they finally gave me morphine, which I highly recommend haha. While the Doc was doing his exam, he grabbed my testicles and shook them, asking if it hurt! I was thinking no, but you're about to be haha.

Wow, they really wine and dine you guys for this award…a ceremony, banquet, and basketball game. Do you get a plaque, or get your name carved somewhere on campus? Whatever, I still think there are decent odds you'll shed a tear at one of these award functions, but we'll see.

Well, I think the UTMB question is easy….of course send it now! Getting on the waitlist is half the battle, and you might be able to get them to consider it before they decide. Who knows, but certainly its worth a shot, and I see no advantage to waiting. Get that award on file. Might go ahead and give the news to Roch too, and take a copy to your int as well. I don't know exactly how these letters are handled. I actually wrote one for a couple of friends of mine that were waitlisted after I got accepted. Dr. Thomas said she'd add it to their files. Neither got in, but frankly they weren't particularly strong candidates on paper.

I wish dd and I could help you decide, but I don't know what we can really say that would. With UTMB, I just sorta knew after the day there that it was going to be the place. I tried to be very objective about all the schools, but when I sat down with the 4 packets and compared them, I found myself minimizing the relative strengths of the other schools and the relative weaknesses of UTMB. Once I realized what was doing, it was an easy decision to just stop kidding myself haha.

So I just got to a new stage in my hold at Michigan State CHM. After three months of waiting they finally requested my LOR's. So now I'm in a new stage of waiting haha. I was actually kind of surprised, I figured by now they would have just sent me my rejection letter. Maybe they'll get my letters then reject me.

And on the subject of letters to schools, what do you guys think about letters of intent? Should I send one to the school I'd most want to go to (I'd have to decide between Houston or utmb) , or the school I have the best shot of going to (MCG)?

I dunno what they will do for us at the banquet actually. It's all really kept a secret until we get there I think cause none of us expected what happened last night to happen. Last night they gave us long sleeve tshirts that say Mizzou on the front w/ a big M behind it and then Mizzou '39 on the back. Who knows what we will get at the banquet. I'm excited though, it just might be cooler than all the Homecoming stuff.

How would you suggest to write this letter to UTMB? I know what I would write about the award, but since I already sent them a letter awhile back, I don't exactly know what else to put.

If I were you dd, I would send the LOIntent to the place you most wanna go... i.e. UTMB or UTH. Because if you wrote the LOIntent to MCG, got in there but also got a Texas school, you'd be in a pickle. I would write the LOIntent to UTMB or UTH and write a LOInterest to MCG. But that's just my opinion.

I know exactly jack about them, but I can't believe they mean much. I've never even read any of the threads dealing these haha. I'm not sure why an adcom would really care to be honest.

Don't know what's going to happen huh? Well, if a food fight is involved please remember to hoard and protect as manyof the delectables as possible. Thank you.

Just explain about the award. Maybe a couple of sentences about how you still really like UTMB, but really just the award haha. Anything else would just be useless filler at this point and detract from the real purpose of your writing.

It's really just a letter saying that if you get into their school you're promising to go. More than anything I guess it sort of solidifies your commitment to the school and shows a genuine interest as you would pass on offers from any other schools. Not sure if it's legally binding, but schools may take a certain degree of offense if you do not attend the school after saying so. There's a bit of controversy over people sending multiple letters of intent

There best not be a food fight... the attire for the banquet is dressy black and gold and if I get food on my lovely black dress or pretty gold shoes... its time to pull out the suppressed lacrosse rage :meanie:

So how would I start that letter rather than saying "I am writing to update you on a recent award I have received..."

Also... email or USPS?

Dear Med School,

It has come to attention that I have not infact been accepted to your school. I am writting to inform you of yet another reason why I am better than every other applicant who's applied this year, in past years, or will ever apply in the future. Now that you have the complete file of my amazingness please promptly send my acceptance to my current email address. Barring the outrageous oversights in the fact that your school has not accepted me, I am willing to accept an acceptance if it is sent promptly along with an apology for not accepting me earlier in the season, and a cash compensation for the mental distress incurred during the waiting process

lacrosse

Hey, I guess it can't hurt, just don't expect it to help.

Well, as long as they post the disastrous results on Youtube haha.

I wouldn't think too deeply about it. There's nothing wrong with that really...sure you can garnish and polish it some but I'd get straight to the point. If you want to add something else, just make sure it's not a rehash of anything in your PS or other letter...but you knew that🙂. Send email...USPS is way too slow. My two cents.

myKudu... check yo PMs homes... please 😀

Not the glowing endorsement I was hoping for, but I'll take it 👍

You know, I figure that may be my policy when I start treating patients...

Alright here's the UTMB lowdown...

So I emailed Dr. Thomas the update and a little paragraph about my continued interest and here was her reply this morning:

Thank you for voicing your continued interest in attending UTMB. At the
current time, our class is filled, however, we do anticipate movement
sometime during the months of March -June. I will send your email over
to our Admissions Office so that they can make a note of your interest.

Kindest regards,

Lauree Thomas, MD

and Admissions
