out of state for texas schools

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We must all be bumps on logs this week! I've been enjoying my two days of nothingness. It has been raining here, too, for the first time in MONTHS!🙂

I've been sick w/ some virus that is making my throat feel super swollen. I had a fever all yesterday and the lovely drainage made me have some awesome nausea twice. I went to get checked by a nurse practitioner when I got my second PPD test (which, this time, the lady that did it was awful at it). She has me gargling and swallowing a mixture of 2 tsp. liquid Maalox and 2 tsp. liquid Benadryl.

mmmmm artificial cherry x2.

Feeling better today, though. 🙂

I'm there with you - my allergies flared last week in New Orleans, and I have intermittent congestion and fluid in my ears. My throat isn't swollen, but I have pressure in my neck. You could try the benadryl in cherry and the Maalox in mint. 🙄 Yuck!!

BTW, you guys are all invited to my birthday/midlife crisis party next Saturday. :hardy: It's at my parents' house on the 19th at 5:30. They'll be fixing fajitas (yum) and the pool will be open!:hardy: Let me know if you're coming, and we'll throw on some extra meat and/or veggies.😉

Last weekend was more paraglider training for me. It was gusty, and I got dragged through the mud a few times as we practiced "kiting" the wing. Also picked up a few scrapes, a sunburn, a twisted ankle, and about 15-20 chigger bites. But its all good🙂.

The big 4-0?

Happy way early birthday!:hardy:

Thought I'd drop in on you guys! :hello: I'm all moved in and everything, and have been trying to deal with all the fun that comes with that. Plus I still have no internet at my house and have been leaching off anywhere I can find it, mostly on campus. Pre-entry is going pretty well so far, not too involved, mostly a lot of review type things, getting to know everyone. It's just weird actually starting to study again!

Hope you're enjoying it!

I'm headed to Columbia for the last time in a loooooong time... so weird!

I'm hanging out in Weslaco, Texas, about 5 miles from the Mexico border. We've got a group of about 55 people down here doing Vacation Bible School, construction, etc. for a local Spanish-speaking congregation. It's our serious culture wake-up for the year. We had 61 kids this morning, including one who cut his thumb and required 3 stitches. Of course, it had to have been on the activity that I put together. Yes, I supplied the razor knife to the 13 year old who did it.🙄 We actually had a doctor and a nurse on site, but no suture kit, so they had to take him next door to the clinic there.

I'm looking at my feet, which got a little bit of sun through the holes in my crocs. I now have polka dotted feet!

So the kudu finally picked a spot and is moving as well...hmmm we all are/have moved. Got a studio apt downtown. Its in a ~100 year old building with 5 or 6 other units occupied mainly by other utmb people. Its owned by a very senior faculty member (recently chosen Galvestonian of the year....wife I think is chair of Derm dept.) Guess I better not screw up haha. Not luxury by any means, but more than adequate for me. Its $400/mon ABP including cable. No pets though, so the kitty is going on craigslist. Something like 35-40 restaurants, coffee shops, etc. within 4-5 blocks🙂.

If you guys have any tips on furnishing a small place optimally I'll take 'em.

dd, say hi to Diana and Sarah for me if they're at prematric.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

😆 Picture it... 4 years down the road, first day of internship... kudu... attempting to hide his crocs under his scrubs so he's not a hypocrite... haha I don't have any, but I'm thinking by then I might.

So I did my last Mizzou event 🙁 I had a lot of fun... people clapped for me, laughed at my hilarious (of course) jokes, and I answered a lot of questions... oh, and met some verrrrrry odd people. This one guy's mom came to talk to me after the presentation (we gave 4) and she was like well my son wants to go to med school (he's a high school senior this august) and he's looking at private schools on the east coast, what do you think? Of course I blabbed on and on how great Mizzou is... but then I told her save your freakin' money! You will appreciate it later down the road! And she kept going on and on about how he wants to do rads and I was like uh huh... sure. He's 17, I'm sure he knows that for sure. And she was one of those types of ladies that just kept staring at you even though you were finished talking.

I also met a guy and his son who also wanted to be pre-med but was interested in the Conley program (pre-admissions to Mizzou Med as a senior in high school) so another girl was talking to him but I was talking to the dad and he was like yeah I went to Mizzou Med! He was a ob/gyn and he was so refreshing... he was like you will love getting away for a bit, and don't let anyone tell you that this isn't a great job. I was like, can you come w/ me and reassure me everyday! 🙄

I said bye to one of my old neighbors that I lived by for 2 years today... he was one of my best friends here, it was so sad!!

Oh, and kudu... making chocolate fudge cake right now 😀

Say hi to Diana for me, too! I met her at A&M last year. She's sweet. Haven't actually met Sarah, but I feel like I know her.🙄

Small place furnishment - Ikea. Lots of great stuff for not much money. Won't last you 100 years, but you'll be dead by then anyway.

Give your kitty to Diana or Sarah. Or some other med student. Craigslist is way too impersonal (and scary) for a kitty.:scared:

As for the Crocs, when you're dealing with heat and mud and water and rocks and ants, there's nothing better. Until, of course, I remembered the ant bite that is right under the edge of the shoe. I switched to another pair of shoes today. Now I have zig zag lines across my feet.

I learned to hula tonight. It was pretty fun!

awwww that's so sad!! 🙁

Yeah, she's a cool cat too. I handpicked her during my last couple of weeks at the Humane Society. She's basically a dog with good manners haha. I'll try again and see if I can convince the fam to take her.

I don't have any, but I'm thinking by then I might.

You're not going to catch me in L&D in anything less than golashes my friend.

Please don't make me weep for you.

Argyle and lots of Crest white strips??? How many seniors were in this? Was it an all day affair? Neat to be invited to do that.

'bout time. I was starting to miss being tantalized.

I think going through two app cycles on here with Diana has given me a couple of cavities.

Yep, already been checkin' out Ikea.

Video or it didn't happen😛.

That. Is. Awful. People clapped everytime I was introduced because the head of the Honors College would say things I did in college and said "she was a sports med intern for Mizzou Football and was solely responsible for their #1 ranking this year" haha. And everytime he said she will be going to Roch there was a collective "ooooo" The thing that people laughed a ton for was when I was answering "how does the Honors College help pre-meds" and I was explaining how they help through the app process and w/ our committee interview and how the head of the Honors College will tell you if you look awful... didn't think it was that funny, but apparently it was.

I was the only one who had graduated. I did it last year too when I worked there over the summer. So it was me and a couple girls who were working there. Head of the Honors College just loves me so much though, he asked me back 🙄

It was from about 7:45-2. We had 4 sessions at 8, 9, 11, 1. Basically, we were in an auditorium w/ at least 130 people in the room each time and we stood on stage and answered stuff.

Congrats on the apartment, that's a great price. Are you near that main road where all the hooplah goes on during mardi gras?

And don't think there are any dianas or sarahs in the program...

We have one somewhere in houston, I believe. I went there a really long time ago. Personally I'm not a huge fan, at least when it comes to putting together the furniture. Their directions have no written instructions and only like 3 pictures with a little stick guy showing you how to put it together :bullcrap:

And I'm with kudu on the crocs, I don't care how comfortable people claim they may be, I'm not selling out my manhood to wear some squishy, holey shoes that can be decorated :nono:

oh, wow, a whole family of m&ms... I never knew... were you the first, dd128? or am I just really slow? I swear I have been in this thread before, but I never noticed, lol.

Oh, and I hope the move went well. Good luck in Houston!

I'm a poseur. I just copied them.

(But I asked first.)

dd was the first and then I changed when I knew my m&m's attire would suit my life for the next 4 years. Then we all decided it was our symbol 👍

Look at dd changing his status to Med Student... like he's better than us, cpa. I was actually trying to decide when it would be okay for me to make the change... maybe I can now since dd went first 🙄

Officially moved out of Columbia today... said bye to some people and it was so, so odd. Boyfriend asked me to make the trip over there one more time so I could take his gargantuan (sp.?) TV home since it won't fit in his car, so, I'll get to say bye to my favorite prof, and get my sushi and favorite frozen custard one more time right before moving. Speaking of moving, I leave in exactly 3 weeks!!!! :scared:

So, kudu... I finally got to try a piece of this chocolate fudge cake that I've made so many times but never tried... it is the most rich thing I have ever tasted. I do not know how my boyfriend and his roommate can eat such large pieces of it. I had a tiny slice and couldn't even finish it.

Thanks man, hope mcg treats you well. Yeah we're a happy m&m package/family now 😎

I'm going to ignore the sarcasm about my status and give you the benefit of the doubt cause I understand you are probably quite jealous 😛 (you know you've been itching to change yours 😉) Besides I'm in the anatomy lab tomorrow starting my dissections and say that officially makes me a med student, along with a biochem quiz! 👎

And keep the food bragging to a minimum please, I haven't had a halfway descent meal since leaving home 🙁

We have one somewhere in houston, I believe. I went there a really long time ago.

DianaUT and AggieSarah. Diana will be an M1, Sarah an M2. I promise they're there!!

Ikea is at I-10W and 6? Not too far from downtown. I passed it last week.

Ok, in the annals of great days, today was not one of them.

My son hurt his thumb playing dodgeball the other day in the Valley.👍
It was really bothering him today, and the doctor (internist) who evaluated it the other day and didn't think it was broken looked at it again and said "maybe you should get it x-rayed." Her husband most likely broke his pinky playing with these same kids (kickball, though). Rough kids.🙄 So we got home this evening and I took him to the doc-in-the-box where we waited way too long. I think there were a couple of other orthopedic injuries just ahead of us taking up the x-ray stuff. Anyway, verdict is inconclusive. He broke this same thumb 3 years ago, and the doc couldn't tell if what he was looking at was old or new (gamekeeper's thumb). He was impressed with the spica splint I had on the kid (a relic of prior broken thumb), and said he was 39 when he finished med school 5 years ago. So, we're back to the hand specialist this week. Tomorrow's golf lesson must be canceled. 👎 No golf for the forseeable future.

Also, I got my first speeding ticket EVER today. 🙁 The worst part is my husband was 2 minutes behind me and saw me pulled over.😳 It was humiliating, then my daughter went and told EVERYONE who was in our group (like 60 people) about it!!:eyebrow: The ticket was for 75 in a 65. I was talking to the other people in my rental vehicle, and didn't notice that the speed limit had dropped about a mile back on the south side of San Antonio.:bullcrap: This is all after I had warned everyone not to speed through certain small South Texas towns (and I promise, I did not).

All to say, not a top 10 day.

Hmmm...you probably mean The Strand, and yes, I'm in that general area.

Had a girl at my table wear them in anat lab. Purple. She was cute though, so I gave her a get-outta-butt-whippin' free card.

oh, wow, a whole family of m&ms... I never knew... were you the first, dd128? or am I just really slow? I swear I have been in this thread before, but I never noticed, lol.

This thread's been here awhile, and the population is small. The inbreeding has made us look more and more alike. And yes, dd was the grandpappy m&m.

Kinda poetic way to end your stay by helping to recruit the next gen😎. Dude, if your fb is any indication, they should've set up a table and let everyone come and say goodbye to you...just for expediency, of course.

Wait, now you had to know that the cake was rich...you made it! What do you put in it? It can't be richer than the brownies...is it the icing?

Dude, she wasn't the first to think of or do it. She's having trouble coping.

About the cadavers....Look man, at first you might be disgusted by the whole thing, but over time, as the weeks pass by and the two of you become more and more intimate, certain .....feelings...might start to form. But please bro, don't give in to forbidden luuuuvvvv.

I knew it would be, but dang. I dunno... but it's much richer than brownies. Maybe its the dry pudding mix that goes into it... and yes, the icing is really rich.

Speaking from experience??

That sucks a lot. You couldn't charm your way out of it? 😉

No, for one thing he really didn't give me a chance to talk - he just took my driver's license and went back to his car. For another thing, the other women in my behemoth vehicle were laughing so hard, it wouldn't have worked anyway. What was really sad is that the SUV I was driving had a magnetic thing from our church on it - so it was obvious that it was a church vehicle. Oh, well. It's only debt for the next 40 years!

Speaking from experience??

They told us at UTMB that a lot of their cadavers come from the prison system...😏

Dodgeball...now there's a sport I could excel at🙂.

Busted! Better pay that ticket or I might see you down here someday😉. I've only gotten 1 speeding ticket too....so we're even.

Speaking from experience??

She was tough, quiet, available 24/7, very low maintenance, more than willing to give her heart to me, one of the few women actually smaller than me, liked spending a lot of time horizontal, and kept staring at me....had trouble discussing current events though.

They told us at UTMB that a lot of their cadavers come from the prison system...😏

😕 Hmmm...never got that impression. I know they get them from Dallas and Houston. We did have 1 dead by lethal injection last year....looked him up, pretty mean dude.

Goin' through old stuff....so far I've encountered elementary school report cards, old penpal letters from the late '80's, and a few family photos from the 1920's.

Dodgeball...now there's a sport I could excel at🙂.

We got an email today about an attempt to start intramurals in Temple. With 2 small classes, they aren't able to do a whole lot. Two of the suggested sports are dodgeball and kickball. Let's hear it for broken digits!! I offered to be the team mom.😉

I also looked at my registration today. They have registered us for the whole year, with credit hours listed - 49 for the year!! I'll rub that in to my Aggie freshman friend who's worried about her 15 for the first semester.

Oh, and if you ever need money...tell people you're going on a mission trip to Guatemala. My daughter sent out 19 letters 2 weeks ago saying she needed $600 for her trip. To date she has collected $1575!!😱 Needless to say, she's not spending any of her money, I'm not spending mine, and she's got money to start her fund for her next trip (she wants to go to Uganda next year).

Great! She's good. Might be some PR or fundraising work in her future. Hmmm....I've been feeling called to do a mission trip to Aspen....😛

I found an old jean jacket from Junior High...still fits perfectly haha. I swear I drank lots of milk growing up.

haha, yeah so far no deep feelings, but we'll see...he is a cute guy 😛

No but seriously, it was sort of weird at first, but once you start dissecting it looks less and less like a person, and is easier to deal with. We started in the back, because supposedly those are the easiest things to learn 🙄 And of course there was about 2 inches of adipose tissue to dig through. It was funny, when it's time to do the lamenectomy you break out the hammer and chisel and go to town. I got a little over excited and messed up a few things I wasn't suppose to 😳

 that would be kind of funny, they can perform experiments on them when they're alive, and then use them to train med students 👍

Oh, and my smile is not like that this morning... just got home from getting my temporary crown... what 22 year old has a freakin crown in their mouth?!?!? Ridiculous.

And, even more ridiculous, the insurance company might not pay for any of it because their "dental consultants" didn't see signs of "fracture or decay"... I feel like calling them and being like look, I'm 22, what 22 in their right mind would ever, ever get a crown just for the heck of it??

Ugh. /rant.

And, even more ridiculous, the insurance company might not pay for any of it because their "dental consultants" didn't see signs of "fracture or decay"... I feel like calling them and being like look, I'm 22, what 22 in their right mind would ever, ever get a crown just for the heck of it??

Ugh. /rant.

Oh, that's awful. Just awful. I feel for you. +pity+

My daughter and I bugged out of San Antonio for Temple today for a day or two. I'm kind of in trouble with my husband, though, because I forgot to buy paint for the painter before I left. I waited around for him all morning, then I got busy getting stuff together, and it didn't occur to me again. After all, he wasn't there. 🙄 Oh, well, hopefully he's got enough to keep himself busy until I get back there with paint. Hate to make the hubby wait at Lowe's or Home Depot while they mix 14 gallons of paint when I'm not making any money at the moment.

Got my internet hooked up today, too. Does anyone know if you have to have one computer hardwired to the modem to act as a server, or if they can all be wireless (dsl)? Also, I went and bought a digital converter box and an antenna (didn't realize I need both), since the cheapest cable I could get here is like $40 per month.😱

Not a 100% but I think you have to have a computer hardwired to the cable to get wifi. Cable is far from cheap here as well. I got a packaged deal for internet and basic which wasn't too terrible from comcast. Unfortunately at the complex it's comcast or nothing, so I couldn't shop around.

Disecting upper extremity tomorrow :woot: Which, while exciting, is sort of bad cause I'm still not great with the back yet. And along with all the biochem and physio we already have it's starting to get to be a lot....ugh, feels like I've started school already 😛

The sad thing is my penmanship peaked before you wee born haha.

Why did you need one? About half the time I go to the dentist they guess I'm from east or west Tx because I have some flourosis, which is associated with drinking lots of well water as a child, which I did. My teeth are very strong due to it, but it also makes them more porous and easier to stain.

Fortunately, prematric is at a much faster pace than the real deal. Comcast has a 19/mon for 6 mon deal on their internet, I'm gonna look into that.

So yesterday I got up at 5 and moved everything over...my new apt is on the 3rd floor. My calves are sore, and my left ankle has some inflammation...typical behavior for it though.

Yeah I had the same post moving woes. I was sore for a few days afterwards, it blows living above the first floor.

On an unrelated note, have any of you guys seen the whole scrubs and cowboy boots thing? The first person I saw I laughed it off as some random weird person, but turns out it's quite common.

And lacrosse is the last pre-med out of the bunch....😛

I honestly don't know what happened to it, but my dentist was afraid that the tooth might crack someday in the near future. I grind my teeth, so maybe that has something to do w/ it. I got a bite plate put on my retainer though, so no longer grind 👍 Yes, I still wear my retainers. But my dentist forgets he asks about grinding/bite plate every time I go, so he always asks. Yet somehow he remembers that I'm going to Rochester and already met my roommate 😕

At least you're all moved in though! I keep looking at my heap of stuff and not wanting to deal w/ it.

In some ways you guys have it easier...you get to pack up all your stuff at point A and move it to point B. I'm going to be spending the next several months (at least) trying to find the equilibrium of what of my stuff needs to be where - or just duplicating it! I actually remembered to bring back my tennies yesterday, and the paint that I used on the bathroom trim that now has to be used on the inside of my front door in San Antonio.

It's like when you first moved out of mom & dad's house to college, and kept going back home for more stuff. 😉

On another note...my son now has a cast on his right thumb and hand. They did a little cast that just covers the palm, so he can still move his wrist, but he's in it for 3 weeks. There's still no certainty that it's broken, but better safe than sorry! After a week and it's still swollen and green, the hand doc was not willing to chance it.

Poor kid... is it at least a fun color? My friend had that exact cast (she was a softball pitcher... got hit by a line drive) and her's was bright pink... I hope his is not 🙄

Are you serious?? That might trump crocs.

I was holding strong as a pre-med... now that everyone else is doing it though... 🙄

Neon green.:woot: He's got a good attitude about it, and just wraps it in a grocery bag. He's going to a water war thing tonight (squirt guns, etc.), and I bought him some nitrile gloves hoping we could get one over it, but no such luck. 🙁 He'll just have to go with the grocery bag. Maybe he could use a Target bag.🙄

Nope. I did shadow a FM that wore them, but not with scrubs.

How much did the bite plate cost?

Yep...3 down, 1 to go. Move! Move! Move!

What do you think of the new rotations in Round Rock? I guess it wouldn't make much sense now that you have a house in Temple.

Confoooorm. Confoooorm....

At least its not paintball or BB guns...ouch.

You know, I can't remember at all. I wish I could have just gotten one of those mouthguard things at the store cause they are a lot cheaper, but they don't fit on my retainer.

Alright, alright! Give me 2 weeks!

Went to the Cardinals game last night (the last one I will be attending for awhile now 🙁)... awesome game to go out on.

None of you came to my party. 🙁:hardy: It was fun, but tiring. I got some cool stuff, too, including the "Taters of the Lost Ark" Mr. Potato Head I registered for.🙄

My husband had gone through a slew of old pictures, and had a DVD done of them. That was cool (I knew about it.) My parents paid for my laptop (I didn't expect that one!). My son got thrown into the pool by his friend Audrey (yes, they were "together" for a time last year, but are just good friends). Brian absolutely deserved it, and managed to keep the Cubs hat and the cast dry, but his phone, which he's had for 6 weeks, was in his pocket.😱 Glad I bought the insurance on it!!

Conform, Lacrosse!! Conform! Get with it, girlfriend!!

Sorry, TX is quite the long trip for me 🙄

Just... can't... do... it. Give me at least one more week... I find a certain sense of freedom that comes along w/ my current status 😛

Sorry! Besides, it's my understanding that at one's 40th there is much wailing, grieving, and rending of garments...

I think dd has taken a double-twisting backflip into the abyss of med school. *Taps*

Okay so I think I'm switching phone companies (possibly to AT&T)... any one have good suggestions on phones?

Should've told me a couple of weeks ago dude...I have probably the best cell plan that will ever see the light of day from Sprint, but it wasn't advertised publicaly. They recently changed it though, oh well.

What do you want/need your phone to do? Style preferences...flips, bars, PPCs, etc?

Sorry, wasn't really in the neighborhood either, but would have liked to see the whole falling in the pool issue 😉

haha, it feels like I'm falling, but never hit the bottom of anything 😱

Studying seems to have retaken my life...the year was good while it lasted. I'm looking forward to my last week and a half break before school 'really' starts and pre-entry ends.

Give me time!!! I need more time!!! :scared:

I'm with att right now. They're good for the most part, never had any horrible issues. I'd probably stay away from the blackberry, I'm about to get rid of mine, though not sure for what. Sort of want an iphone (I'm not sure what anatomy lab guide you guys will use, but the one we have has an application for iphone so you can upload flashcards, quite cool 😎). Draw back being you have to spend $200 for the phone and extra dough for the service contract.

....I should be studying, we're doing all the brachial plexus mumbojumbo on our cadaver tomorrow, and not really even sure what in biochem...👎
