out of state for texas schools

Should've told me a couple of weeks ago dude...I have probably the best cell plan that will ever see the light of day from Sprint, but it wasn't advertised publicaly. They recently changed it though, oh well.

What do you want/need your phone to do? Style preferences...flips, bars, PPCs, etc?

Well, I have Sprint right now. I'm only a family plan w/ my mom and my brother, but my dad has AT&T through his job and wanted me to switch since he apparently plans to call me a lot and wants free mobile-mobile.

As for style... I'm somewhat tired of my flip, but its not bad. All I really need a phone to do is make calls and text (a lot). I'm pretty low-maintenance w/ it.

I'm with att right now. They're good for the most part, never had any horrible issues. I'd probably stay away from the blackberry, I'm about to get rid of mine, though not sure for what. Sort of want an iphone (I'm not sure what anatomy lab guide you guys will use, but the one we have has an application for iphone so you can upload flashcards, quite cool 😎). Draw back being you have to spend $200 for the phone and extra dough for the service contract.

Oh boo, dd... I was thinking about the blackberry curve, even though its a bit pricey for me (I don't like paying much for a phone). I was thinking the LG Shine (its a slider phone), but I'm not sure if I'm into the whole RAZR-like flat buttons deal.

The iPhones are really sweet... but again, I'm just a talk/text kinda girl. As for Netter's Anatomy Flashcards, I heard some school's dean made those... oh wait, it was mine 🙄 I am somewhat excited that I don't have to buy this one anatomy book since the dean co-wrote it and teaches our class so he writes most of it in our syllabus 👍 Haven't seen the iPhone ones, but had a friend that did and said he might buy the iPhone just based on those alone.

In that case, I guess it boils down to whether you want to pay extra for a qwerty board. I know the Curve and the Centro are considered very good phones, don't know much about the Shine.

I was also thinking it might be a good idea to buy a phone like the blackberry or palm now so I could get pda use out of it later when it would come in handy.

I'm just super cheap when it comes to this stuff though... I've had 4 phones in my life and have only paid for one of them. My first phone ever was free, second phone was 50 bucks after the upgrade rebates, third was free under the warranty since the second broke, fourth free again since they gave me a crappy phone as the replacement for the second. I'm pretty sure I've had the fourth for at least 2 years now. So you see my personal dilemma with spending 100-200 bucks on 1 phone when I've spent 50 on 4

For someone who likes to talk, you sure do find a way to skimp on the equip haha.👍

I thought about the pda side when you asked. I not real sure how much I'd let that affect your decision. If you need pda features, by the time 3rd year rolls around you'll be eligible for an upgrade, and as fast as that side of the phone market is changing, it might be wiser to wait on that as a criteria. I bought an HTC Touch a little while ago for $270, but it basically replaces a laptop for me, and frankly I've just never liked flip phones at all.

Go play with a qwerty phone if you haven't, some texters can't ever go back to a keypad/T9 after having had one, but if you don't like it, what else about the Curve would be worth the price? Is it purrty??😛

Ahh my friend... you forget that I do my FM rotation earlier than 3rd year 😉

In the "Rochester Blue Book" that was written by the class of 2009 for the incoming class of 2010 (so a couple years back), they talked about PDAs and said that its not necessary 1st year, but its a good thing to get used to.

So I was looking more at the Centro and it seems like its a really good 1st time PDA user kind of phone. And, its cheaper than the Curve (which is prettier, but oh well 🙄) at 100 bucks (only 50 for the refurb one... my phones have been refurb through the warranty thing, so that's always an option). I just will need to get used to the QWERTY thing... the buttons seem so tiny!

I think I'd rather have my pda separate from my phone. I just think I'd rather have a slightly larger pda for ease of viewing. Then again, maybe I'm just old. 🙄

Really? I couldn't stand to do that. I hate carrying around anything more than absolutely necessary... like to the point of being poked at for it in undergrad.

But dammit, I got good at having only the essentials and almost never using a backpack. 👍

Yeah, it may be a good idea to start getting use to the smart phone, as I'm sure we'll all be attempting to figure out enough things once starting rotations. The centro was the one I was looking at too. Like the treo too, but it's a bit more expensive...then again I may just upgrade back to a flip phone and get the smart phone once I offically start my rotations in third year (like a normal med student 😛)

Anatomy lab was a blast today, well sort of. It was short at least. Our professor is really enthusiastic, and if you ask him a question about something more often than not he jumps in and does a lot of the disecting for you. So we had our brachial plexus and axillary artery disected out in like an hour. Now I just need to memorize everything....

Shoot...I sure did.

You know, you can search them on youtube and find some very thorough reviews of these phones from tech blogs, etc. I'm sure...pretty helpful. I don't think either has wifi. Prob more medical software for Palm, but don't quote me on that. Just make sure that keyboard/screen is big enough for ya. Does att give a 14 or 30 day tryout?

The diff in price is what...$50 bucks or so? I mean c'mon, this is something you're going to use everyday for a long time, at best its a tiebreaker. If the Curve is better for you ergonomically....

Really? I couldn't stand to do that. I hate carrying around anything more than absolutely necessary... like to the point of being poked at for it in undergrad.

I never quite understood the people who lug around huge packs like their going on an Everest expedition.

DR CUBAM and Real Texans (or Randy Travis) Drink Cold Beer...haha.

Shoot...I sure did.

haha  totally. Someone told us the randy travis one. Don't forget: "Screw The Lawyer Save the Patient" for the axillary artery branches 😀

Now my dad is thinking we might stick w/ Sprint... 🙄

The only reason I was thinking of going w/ a Palm over the Curve was because the touch screen is pretty awesome. But who knows what I'll end up with... Sprint makes you get their data plan even if you don't want it (which I don't need right now) if you have a pda. More searching this weekend...

On a side note... HAPPY BIRTHDAY CPA! :hardy::hardy::hardy:

Thanks! All the excitement is over, I think. We're having dinner at the parents' house tonight, nothing spectacular. I think the real celebration happens next week!!

My son's replacement phone arrived today, and his old one started working again. Typical!! It took about 60 hours to dry out. Same with his shoes!🙄

Are you guys going to do the cranial nerves?

fizzle..... Oh well, keep us posted.

Uh, no....no that's not typical. Are you saying that your son's phone died and then resurrected about 3 days later? DO NOT TOSS THAT PHONE!!! Quick, see if whatever the phone was laying on has its outline burned into it.

Alternatively:

"Oh, oh, oh, to touch and feel a/virgin girl's vagina -- ahh, heaven"

"Some say money matters, but my brother says big boobs matter more"

Gotta love mnemonics.

oohh! Page 4!

How's the packing coming, lacrosse?

dd, kudu, are you flooded?? We haven't gotten much yet...just a few sprinkles, but my power was apparently out while I was gone. 😕

Looks like she's a little too busy playing Beastmaster..

Nope, just some rain here and there, nothing cool. The high/gusty winds unfortunately have foiled my plans to practice with my wing this week.

Yeah, not a whole lot either. Some thunderstorms last night, and rain on and off today that has only served to make it muggy 👍 (more so than usual anyway).

On the phone front, I'm starting to seriuosly consider an iphone. The upgrade price isn't a whole lot more than the other pda's, and rate plane is the same sooo....I'm going to ponder it some more before really deciding 😉

Oh and I'm seeing my first standardized patient tomorrow :scared: No physical, but I've got to somehow figure how to take a history with not a whole lot to go on. They gave us an example of a good interview and a bad one, and a few exercises but it still seems like they are just throwing us in there and having us learn as we go. I think they're recorded so I may share it, if it's not too embarassing 😛

Not bad. I just basically need to get the stuff I'm using in my room right now packed up. I also need to buy a desk... I found a nice one on craigslist for 40 bucks (which is a lot cheaper than the ones you get from like Walmart or Target and put together), but I'm just worried that it will be too big for my room. Really hard to tell from pictures.

I was going to get a Samsung Instinct (Sprint's form of the iPhone) since its $129 w/ my upgrade, but I'm a big texter and I think I would be really slow on it since there are no buttons to feel.

Good luck w/ that! Let us know how it goes.

So I said goodbye to my best friend from college tonight. She's off to Chicago for med school at Loyola. Long story short, it sucked. And to make it worse, on my way to her house, I was on the phone w/ my boyfriend and he said "so you're moving soon." We've kinda avoided it, but he's coming home from school for the weekend and I know we need to talk about it. Why is this so hard? [/emotional rollercoaster]

Man, att gouges you on data if you have a pda. My $30 plan would cost me at least $99 on att. Ouch. But yeah, if you're going high-end might as well get the iphone unless you'll miss the BB email or want a hard keyboard.

How'd the history go?

Bittersweet. Are you ready for the big puppy dog eyes and the, "But, but....I love your brown....I mean you!" Sniffle. Sniffle.

And now onto the third phone company... Verizon. Apparently Verizon is what many students up in Rochester have since there is really good reception. I asked the guy about the Treo 755p and he was telling me that Treos sometimes are awful w/ 3rd party apps (cause I told him I would add ePocrates Rx) and cause the phone to freeze and then you have to reboot everything. Sad... the touchscreen is just so fun.

So he had me looking at the Moto Q9c... liked it pretty much. He also told me he would throw in a free car charger and bluetooth earpiece (not that I need it, but oh well). And my mom liked it because they have free phones there and she's super excited about this purple one they have 🙄

We went to Sprint afterwards and the guy even admitted that Verizon gets way better reception and was shocked at all the free stuff they were going to give me. My dad was like they are giving her 2 free accessories at Verizon and the guy was like I can give you 3 for $80  Then my mom goes do you have free phones? And the guy goes the cheapest is $20 and my mom said "they are free at Verizon... and purple!!"

So dd... would you suggest not getting a BB? I think I'm now b/w the BB Curve 8330 and the Moto Q9c. Treo bites the dust... sadly. I heart touch screens.

Pretty good actually, a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Once you get going the nerves kind of go away. I was a little worried too that I was going to just be acting, but the patient was so convincing I got into it. She presented with bad headaches and pretty much nothing else, so it was a bit of a pain, and I couldn't find anything to link the symptoms to in my interview. So I'm not sure if that's good or bad  I'm still waiting to see my video (unfortunately you can only see it within the network, so you guys don't get to see 🙁 haha).

I had the bb pearl, so I'm not sure if that's the phone with issues or just mine in general. It wasn't horrible, just that the internet wasn't so hot and made it freeze up (pretty much anything with java or any website that was too complicated). Apps never really worked, and I couldn't get it to completely synch up with my computer for some reason. I'm with ya on the touch screen, they're pretty cool 😉

kudu... I've been looking on the allopathic thread at the white coat ceremony thread. At yours, did girls really wear interview style suits? I was planning on wearing the dress I wore to my Phi Beta Kappa induction... but if what people in there are saying is true, I'm going to be the green amongst the dull colored

Orb, Windows Mobile (Smartphone or PPC Edition) does have many more 3rd party apps available, the question is will you use them. If you’re getting a pda phone, you need to know that from time to time they’re going to freeze up/do weird stuff on you, simply because they’re more complicated. Its ironic he was telling you about the Treo because the Palm and BB OS are generally considered more stable than Windows (this whole situation is very much like the Apple vs PC debate). Be aware that ePocrates software is more supported by Palm than WM Smartphone (the OS on that Moto). You can get the Rx on the Moto ok…I think it requires a data plan, and if that’s all you need that’s fine. Keep in mind though that UTMB gives students 4 years of ePocrates Essentials ($150), and Rochacha might do the same….you can only get it on Palm or WM PPC, not BB or WM Smartphone. Is that a big deal? Probably not, but there it is. I think medical software would be supported on Palms fine if that’s what you want, since a lot of docs have used Palm handhelds.

I had the version of the Q prior to the one you’re looking at. It’s not a bad phone. I will say that if you plan on using the internet feature much you’ll definitely want a touchscreen. I think dd was using the stock BB browser on his Pearl. The Curve is a newer phone, and I believe BB updated their browser with it…either way you should be using Opera Mini (its free) as it’s far superior.

Big Red’s home territory is the NE, so no doubt they probably do pretty well up there. With that said, you’re probably not going to notice much difference in the big cities at this point…just check their coverage online to make sure your house is in a good spot. Verizon’s gonna cost more, but they do have a purple phone🙂.

EDIT:You know they sell the Centro too, right?

I don't remember really, but my impression is that there was variety. I wouldn't wear a suit, for goodness sake. I say go green.

Looking at the pics from ours from last year, it seems the A&M one is mostly skirts and blouses type of thing. It doesn't make sense to wear a suit since you're going to have a coat put over it.

I'm still figuring out what to do about our id photos on Thursday, which do require a suit. I've kind of let the stress of the past year get to me, and the suit is not in my size this week.🙄 I think I may wear the jacket with some plain blue pants.

So dd... would you suggest not getting a BB? I think I'm now b/w the BB Curve 8330 and the Moto Q9c. Treo bites the dust... sadly. I heart touch screens.

I'm not DD, but if it were me, I'd go with the Q9c just because I have a problem paying extra every month just for Blackberry's data service. You can still do all the usual Blackberry goodness (push mail, etc.) by other means on Windows Mobile.

Also like the Q9c. If I weren't using an HTC Touch, Moto's Q9c would be a big contender. Oh, and I'd be leery of what store reps say about phones; it's kinda like expecting the folks at dealerships to be able to accurately tell you about the little odds and ends about the cars that you would be so much better informed about by the people that drive them every day (i.e., forums and such).

Like Kudu was saying, Palm is a more stable - but admittedly more aged - OS than WM6 is. And if you really heart the idea of using a touchscreen, now's the time to get one; don't settle on something else if you don't have to 😍

EDIT:You know they sell the Centro too, right?

Thanks for all the info that I barely understand  As far as the Centro goes... the keyboard is so itsy bitsy... and I was not blessed w/ small hands.

blah skirts and blouses... I wore those way too much this past year... I need a break!

True that, mine is horrible, though if we lose our ID we have to take a whole new picture, but that's like 10 smackaroos 👎

So kudu, just out of curiosity how much effort did you put into your pre-entry program. I'm probably cruising by at around 60-70% effort at the moment. Like tonight I'm more than likely going to go out and do more drinking than I should, and while I know I won't during the school year still feel sort of bad, like I'm waisting time I should be using for studying. I saw this kid in the grocery store earlier, who's in the program and was talking to him and he was telling me about how much studying he had done earlier, and I was like "yeah, well, I went to happy hour for a while after class...." I'll probably go to the anatomy review we have tomorrow for a bit, and we do have a biochem quiz monday, but am going to see batman at imax so that takes any saturday studying off the table. I have been doing a descent amout of work and am passing, so it's not like I'm doing horrible, it's just sort of difficult as it's still summer and people are doing stuff.

Happy hour.....sponsoring primary care residencies for decades.😛

I didn't put too much effort into the academic part. I used it as more of an opportunity to get oriented, get a feel for how things work, and just get moved in. If you're passing you're getting more than enough of a knowledge "boost" for the real deal. Go see Batman....

haha, oh I had planned to see batman all along, just looking to make sure I wasn't blowing it or anything. I spent too many years being busier than crap and have developed a thing where I feel like something's wrong if I'm not busy...I'm working on the problem... And didn't do much drinking tonight afterall, spent most of the night shuttling my friends around trying to find a place my buddy's girl could get into, who's only 20. By the time last call came and people started wanting to go to the sex shop (don't ask me why drunk people want to go a sex shop at 2:30 in the morning 😕), I was like "yeah I'm dropping you guys off and going home." 😛

I just got back from the picnic sponsored by the M2 class here in Temple. It was well attended by M1s and M2s. It was really a great way to get to meet people and break the ice before Monday. There are supposed to be 35 of us here in Temple, and there are 24 or so M2s. It was good, but my kids (who seemed to be the only kids there) were bored. Thankfully, I keep a kite in the van, and it was breezy enough to keep them entertained, and the rest of us from broiling!

Now I'm trying to get rid of my shed on Craigslist. We've decided a patio is more utile than a metal shed that needs paint and a door!!

So... do I look any different?? 🙄

I am getting absolutely nowhere w/ this phone stuff. Verizon and AT&T pretty much have the same rates on their plans... I'm not going to deal w/ a data plan right now, I don't need email on my phone. So it's hard to choose b/w the two.

I'm so stuck on the whole Windows vs. Palm... Plus, now I hear that Palm is creating a new OS called NOVA to be released next year... argh. And my dad keeps bugging me about it... and I'm getting nowhere!

You're putting more thought into this than you did about where to go to school.😉 Obviously, you aren't in love with any one of them, so just pick the best deal and stop second guessing yourself!!😛

My shed is being disassembled, and I have $50 in my pocket!! Craigslist works again!😀

Haha choosing a school was easy! And kudu, I think I am going to go check out the centro, even though the keys are small, since it's so cheap.

As far as the networks go, it's hard to pick the best deal! AT&T would be a bit cheaper, but Verizon supposedly has better reception.

Man, you are good at selling stuff on Craigslist... I put my MCAT review crap on there the other day, but nothing. Granted, who is actually going to want them...

cpa, excited for tomorrow??

So... do I look any different?? 🙄

Back in the pack....

You should have a side hobby as an Ebay seller or something. I think you've discovered a new talent.

Hey, before you buy, you should check out Amazon...they always have the best phone deals if you can live with the conditions (look at the little box on the phone's page). http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1217183622/ref=sr_nr_p_23_0?ie=UTF8&rs=864136&bbn=301187&rh=n%3A301187%2Cn%3A864136%2Cp%5F23%3AAT%26T

Just make sure you can adjust to that kb....I think being treated for carpal tunnel would cost much more than any diff in phone prices😛.

We just went to the AT&T store all set to get phones... and just my luck, their computers were down 🙄

I decided on a Centro, though... they are normally 99 bucks after rebates and what not, but this week they are 69 bucks w/ an additional rebate. The keyboard is cramped, but nothing I can't get used to.

So I have to go back tomorrow... hooray! Oh, and I also get my real crown put in tomorrow... hopefully that allows me to eat on the left side of my mouth again.

That reminds me... I forgot to tell you this kudu: when I was getting my temporary crown put on, the dentist was putting fake teeth next to my teeth to see what shade I needed for my crown. He put up this somewhat yellowish tooth and in my head I was like NOOOOOOOOO  But he put it up to my other teeth and goes "Oh, well I'm way off" so I get a nice white one 👍

Well, you could just buy it online...much easier. Hmmm...Electric Blue?

So was he wearing Ray-Bans or Oakleys when he examined you?😀

Oh and cpa, don't worry, I promise I'll never stoop low enough to call you an Aggie haha.

I actually went for the black. Too bad they didn't have the cobalt blue (its like navy) that verizon did. Or turquoise 🙄

haha no, but they make me wear some sunglasses every time I go. They are those super sweet ones from the late 80s and early 90s w/ the neon plastic sides 👍

And just what are people from UTMB? Oh, Galvestonians!! Gee. I don't care that I'll be an Aggie doctor...at least I'm gonna be a doctor!!😀

I just hope I can sleep tonight. I'm pretty excited, but I'm tired, too. Stressed, perhaps.

I'll give a report tomorrow!

Good luck cpa! Have fun!

P.S. this is the second time in about 3 weeks where i've had a fever for 2 days in a row... what the heck is wrong w/ me?!?! 👎

Yeah, att seems to have lots of trouble with their computers at the stores for some reason, I'm with kudu just go order online 👍

I settled on the iphone though! 😀 Only it's backordered, so I'm not getting for like a week or two, it's like waiting for christmas.

Didn't get a lot of sleep last night either, we only have two more weeks in the program, well one week and a block test week so booo for that 👎 Then retreat, and white coat cermemony towards the end of the month.

Well I'm off to take a biochem quiz! Gotta love oxidative phosphorylation and fatty acid metabolism, I sure do 🙄

 at "settled".

P.S... don't get a crown! They suck! And to make it worse, my retainer didn't fit over it so I had to go to the orthodontist to get a new one... Spending money is awesome. 🙄

But, it was actually funny because my orthodontist has 3 offices so the one I went to today, I hadn't been there for like 9 years since I got my braces off, yet they still remembered my name! Crazy memory. So Thursday I get my new navy blue retainer... which will of course match my room  (no, kudu... they didn't have turquoise... I know, I was shocked too.)

Sunglasses?? Never done that. No wonder you have a Cheshire smile...they go to work!👍

So how's the Centro? Since I know you're too stubborn to take our advice and order online.🙄

And just what are people from UTMB? Oh, Galvestonians!! Gee.

Ummm..."Doctor". Although "boss" and "daddy" are pretty common too. Haha...yeah, ok. So, how was Day 1?

Orientation is like when your at a roller coaster and they're telling you to keep your hands in at all times, and its ascending with the "click, click, click". The pause at the top before the release will be this weekend.

:luck: with both.

Yeah, sunglasses. So you don't have to stare at that bright light they put above you. And my dentist doesn't do crap for keeping my teeth white. I just seem to get mad at him every time I go

I like the Centro! The black is pretty. And yes, too stubborn... but only because my mom was getting a phone too and w/ changing networks and wanting them to port over all my numbers in my contact list, going in was just easier. I love the touchscreen... the somewhat cramped keyboard will take getting used to, but I'm already pretty speedy. But a smartphone for only 70 bucks? Can't go wrong.

cpa must be sleepy from first day...

lacrosse rejoins the crew via the moving aspect in less than a week...

:luck: with both.

Thanks, actually got an A 👍

Anatomy lab was fun today, sort of. I got to use the electric bone saw to take out the clavicle 😀 It doesn't leave a very good smell will all the bone dust in the air though. We're removing the thoracic wall on wednesday, I hope they let me play with the saw again

 at "settled".

Settled "on." Not settled "for" 😉

Good luck with the move stuff 🙂 I may have missed it, but what did you end up doing about a place to live?

The brain was the best part of lab for me. It was also kinda funny how over time the division of labor at the tank drifted toward traditional gender roles...the guys would handle the body flipping and blunt/brute force stuff, and the ladies concentrated on the more detail-oriented tasks. Yours truly showed some skill with the hammer and chisel...poppin' the skull cap and the brain out in no time.

Oh dd haha. '39er, we must forgive him. At first, its short-term memories that take the med school hit, but later even childhood memories are at stake. I remember last fall my dad started talking about a vacation we took to CO when I was about 10. I had no recollection of it, and it took awhile to start getting it back...it's only been a partial recovery.

Oh dear dd... you must have missed like a page then . I'm living in a house behind the hospital (in a neighborhood known as the white coat ghetto) w/ a girl in my class.

Ok, so I gave my cat to my parents so they could keep her for awhile till I got moved in and could find a place for her. Less than a week later, they were tired of it...apparently she scratches stuff (really??🙄). They called and were going to give her to a shelter in E Tx. I convinced them to at least let me check it out. So I got on their website and it was a really good place. No euthanasia, seemed high quality and with good adoption screening, so I caved in and let them do it. Forward to tonight, when I get back on to see if they've posted my cat yet....turns out it was a different shelter with the same name (even their links on Petfinder.com are mixed up). The real one is basically animal control and according to their policy she has less than 10 days to find a home before she's killed.

I grew up partly in the country, and have seen animals die violently, and certainly when I worked at my shelter I saw euthansias done, but its still a little different when its your pet on the line.
