out of state for texas schools

Whats with all the M&M avatars?

They are our gang symbols. 😉 If only we actually knew each other in real life.

Good luck at UTMB, and Happy New Year!!:hardy:

I need some advice from the M&Ms...last year I asked UTHSCSA about transfers. After getting the runaround, I finally got to the appropriate dean's secretary who told me I had to submit a request, in writing, to said appropriate dean, then they would tell me what the process was. (This is actually on their website now.) When I asked when to submit the letter, I was told Decemberish. Oh, and it specifically says "no emails."

I drafted a letter in October, ran it by my dean, who gave it her blessing, and mailed it October 28. crickets. nothing. nada.

Monday of this week I sent a very brief email to the dean's secretary (the same one as above), explaining that I had submitted my letter on October 28, heard nothing, and wondering what, if anything, I should expect. I attached a copy of my original letter.

I got an "out-of-office" notification, saying she'd be back on Tuesday, so I know she got it. Once again, though, I've heard nothing. Nada. Crickets.

Should I:
a) give up since they are obviously jerks and I really don't want to go to school there anyway.
b) send the dean the email I sent to the secretary (or something very close to it).
c) call said secretary.
d) send an email to someone else in the office (there are other administrative assistants listed).
e) go visit them next Monday, and park myself in the dean's office.
f) other (please explain).

Everything I've seen from SA is not good regarding their admissions dept. If it was me, I'd say screw them. But you are trying to get out there for the fam so that's a totally different situation. The thing is that you aren't some annoying pre-med (no offense any non m&m's reading this), and should not be getting the run around like this. You are a medical student with a legitimate reason to want to transfer schools and have every right to apply without getting BS. I'd email the dean, if no response, call her, and if no response, then go park yourself in the office. If that doesn't work we'll get the gang together and go visit her house 😉

I say go there. She can't avoid you that way. If you keep emailing/calling, you'll get the runaround till its too late. Tough decision for you though... you want to be in SA for the fam, but aren't in love w/ the school. But, figure it out as soon as you can so you don't have a ton of stress later!

Thanks, guys. My decision is this: I'l wait until I get back to San Antonio tomorrow and check the snail mail (maybe they sent me something?). That should be around 2, so lots of afternoon left. I will then call the secretary/coordinator person that I sent the email to, as looking back at my emails with her from last year, she was quite responsive, if not necessarily helpful. If I get nowhere with that, Monday or Tuesday I will pay a visit to the dean's office. 🙄

Hope you're enjoying your first week back! We've had to make campus selections and submit our schedule requests already. We are also being strongly encouraged to fork over $505 and register for STEP 1. 😱

Uh, oh, UT is about to score...

Sounds like a plan. 👍

Wait. Step 1 costs what?!?!?! 👎

😡 I don't want to talk about it...

Yeah we have been encouraged to register for step since before christmas. I just started registering yesterday. It's a pretty in-depth process 👎

Hi all!

I know this is the wrong place to post this, but I needed some advice from the mighty M&M squad.

I posted earlier today in a thread asking whether my qualifications are sufficient to get an interview at a Texas school. I haven't taken my MCAt yet, but my GPA is 3.69 (should be above 3.7 by the end of the semester), lots and lots of TA-ing and tutoring, little clinical experience, just a couple student-run research projects, but a lot of non-medical volunteering and leadership roles in organizations and stuff.

Whats yalls expert opinion on me getting into UTH, UTMB, UT Health Science Center, etc...

Thanks so much, praise the mighty M&Ms!! 😛

I'm assuming you are a non-resident? Any ties to the state?

Thanks for the praise. Rock the MCAT, apply EARLY and widely, and pray. Hard. Collect good luck charms. There are no guarantees. Absolutely none.

However, don't give up!! If you don't get in the first try, try again. I know people who are great students/doctors who tried 5 times before they got in.

That is not to say you won't get in...(I'm having a bit of frustration from one of the schools this week, so I'm being overly pessimistic!!)

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'm sorry to hear about your frustration cpa2md, I hope you end up getting everything worked out 🙂

I'm actually a resident of Texas... I know, wtf am I doing on this thread..lol. I just saw "Texas" and decided to take a look!

I'm still worried mainly about my GPA... it dropped this past semester due to some personal issues (it was previousley a 3.76). Also I don't have much clinical experience... at all. I've been tutoring and participating in clubs so much I haven't had time. I know clinical experience comes first before clubs and stuff, but do you think they would understand why my clinical exp. is lacking when they see my huge involvement in leadership and tutoring/TA-ing?

I'm working on getting as much clinicals as I can between now and June (of course I'll continue afterwards as well). This won't look good, but it's still something I guess. I also volunteered for the Cerebral Palsy of Greater Houston for 2 summers with hands on experience, so there's that.

My last question is... along with my major, I also am pursuing a philosophy minor. Will that make me stand out to medschools, and is it something they'd like to see?

Thanks in advance for any tips/advice you can give me. I'm so nervous about this whole thing!!! I really want to get into a TX medschool. :s

No worries, CPA is instate...and lacrosse doesn't even go to a texas school 😛

All you can do is get as much clinical stuff between now and when you apply as you can. You'll probably be fine, you just need something to show them you can be around sick people and not have a nervous break down. Don't think the philosophy minor will make much of a difference. If you're just doing it for med school, I'd drop the extra work and just focus on your remaining grades and mcat studying, but keep up with it if you like it. Your gpa is fine by the way, I think most schools avg in the 3.5-3-6 rangeish. I think a 30 or above on your mcat and you should be golden.

Hey guys, just wondering about Houston for OOS. Can I expect to hear back from them on Feb 1st whether I'm accepted or waitlisted? Also, if my interview was on November and haven't heard anything from them, should I resign myself to the alternate list? Thanks.

Unfortunately you probably are in their "alternate pool." Houston has quite a bit of match movement, but it's all instate. If it makes you feel any better that's where I was shipped to a couple years ago (lol, is it really that long ago???). I think I interviewed in december or jan, and was accepted in march. Houston is a school that is pretty receptive to communication thanks to our wounderful dean of admissions. If you do end up on that list, I'd do my best to keep in contact with her.

Hellooooooo!

I don't really have much important to say, but I haven't said anything in awhile, so I thought I would 🙂

Oh, my boyfriend and I got a kitty! We named her Nelly. We both have never owned a cat (we're definitely dog people), but his apartment only allows cats and he was missing having a pet around. She's super cute... she's a Russian Blue (dark grey w/ bright green eyes). I think she likes him more than me... and she definitely does not like me studying. She just lays on top of my books

Hey guys! thanks for the bday wishes! I saw your cat lacrosse, it looks unhappy, hahaha, no kidding.

Did you guys see all the match stuff in the other texas thread? Oh crazy times. I'm going to go talk to some pre-med kids later today, hopefully that will give some idea of why I got into this so looooong ago 😛

I'm trying to stay out of the match stuff as much as possible. I know one person who was involved in it, though, and she had a yucky story. She checked in the morning and it said "no match," but when she checked again later (just to torture herself), she had matched to A&M. There was apparently a glitch in the system. 😱 I wonder if anyone else didn't check again, and doesn't know. Then again, as neurotic as you have to be to get in, you check 15 times no matter what it says!

I have nothing to do w/ Texas besides this thread, so I haven't seen any of that match stuff

Last night, my school threw a dinner for my class at the George Eastman House (the guy who started Kodak among other things)... Everyone got dressed up, we had dinner, and we got to walk around his museum and his mansion which was crazy. Lots of fun but cold outside (weird, I know)!

Thread bump!

How's everyone doing? Any spring break plans going on???

We have exams friday and all next week then break! I don't think I'm doing anything super interesting other than sleeping 😴

Doing well! My break starts March 11th... we have a clinical test on the 8th, basic science on the 11th, and then back to Missouri I go! Plans are drs appt, dentist appt, relaxxxxxing. Plus, my mom's birthday is the 12th, so it will be nice to be home for that.

You guys watching the Olympics much?

I'm watching the Olympics way too much!

My kids will be gone spring break - son is going to Austria and Germany with his high school orchestra, daughter is (hopefully) going skiing with a friend. I can't get the person in charge of the trip to call me back!

My plans, therefore, are to study for Step 1 and relax. If I really wanted to, I could work and make a quick couple of grand, but I don't want to. 😉

I can't believe you guys get spring break- Tech doesn't give us a break... we have 1 Friday off that is a "spring holiday" but we have an exam that next week so it isn't really a break.

Little things that are nice to find out before deciding on a med school 😉

Watched a bit of the olympics. Can't be the curling right 😛

Saw some nasty tumbles on the down hill skiing, and I heard our hockey team pulled a win out of some deep anal sphincter 👍

I am very happy with Tech so I can live with no spring break (we have had 3 snow days though)

I love watching curling- we had an exam yesterday and my friends made me leave my pc at home during study group so I wouldn't get online and watch curling... I have a sports addiction which spans numerous sports. Tonight is Ladies Figure Skating which to me is the highlight of the winter games 😀

What are these snow days you speak of? 🙄 Hooray for upstate NY 😛

Anyone else see the latest interview w/ Apollo Ohno and think he's a big a-hole?

I don't understand his name? Is it real? I mean come on, you better be hurling lightning bolts if you're going to name your kid apollo...

We have an endo/repro/human sexuality test tomorrow afternoon, then spring break. It won't be our hardest test of the year, but it is 175 questions at 1.2 minutes per question = 3 1/2 hours = :barf:

Anybody doing anything fun? (Other than studying for Step 1?)

Do you guys have your schedules for next year yet? I start June 14 with orientation, then on June 21, psych!

*crickets*

SPRING BREAK!!!! 😀

Our spring break has one day left 🙁 It's been good, I did hardly any studying though...we also have our first school required practice step next thursday. Have to see how that goes :xf:

I need to get my background check submitted in the next day or two so that we can start picking our rotation preferences...who knew this would come up so quickly

oh, man. We've been on this page since Christmas! Now that they've moved the "Class of..." threads - we're the biggest!!😀

Happy Passover and Easter. Happy birthday, Lacrosse!

We are down to our last block, and it's a doozy. Three weeks of neuro await. We have a shelf test Monday morning - comprehensive to see if we are ready for Step 1 (ha!), and they are starting lectures Monday afternoon. UGH! We never have afternoon lectures.

Do you guys have any time off this summer? Doing anything awesome in your week or two? (I was going to go to Guatemala, but it fell through yesterday. 🙁)

Haha thanks, cpa! You're the first to tell me that... minus the little cards from stores in the mail. Looks like a get a whole half month of it 🙂

You only have 3 weeks left? I'm finished mid-May. We just finished our "Comprehensive Assessment", which was 2 weeks long. The first week, we saw 8 standardized patients, did a simulator exercise, and a cardio simulator. After each SP, we had a post-encounter exam (they were hard!) and on one SP that we had to do a GU/rectal exam on, we had an oral exam w/ a physician. The 2nd week, we had some computer exercises and video review sessions. We also took one of those mock-boards things... its super fun 🙄 Word is, someone in my class got a score that represented a 222 on the real thing... they freakin got the national average on a practice exam! That's like near my goal

And you seriously never have afternoon lectures? Wow. I mean, I guess we only have it once a week (now 2x for some weeks in this new class we start Monday), but we still have preceptor 2x a week.

We get from mid-May till July 6th as "summer". My test is June 21st, so I have about 2 weeks free. I'm going home for now. What happened w/ Guatemala? And what were you going for?

Happy easter/passover!

Yeah, we don't have afternoon classes anymore either. The load has rather lightened, I'm assuming as it's suppose to be for added step studying time.

My comprehensive last week was terrible, so apparently was the rest of the class, but someone got a 99 on it, equivalent of well over 260 😱 ...give me a break. I'd take the effing thing tomorrow if it was me.

Two more weeks of classes, then a month of exams! hahaha, it almost sounds funny, I mean how can you have a month of exams? I'm planning on having two weeks off after step, we start back up last week of june. Though I'm honestly going to see how practice exams are going leading up to it to see if I need more study time.

lol, and it's not lacrosse's bday for like 2 weeks right?

lol, and it's not lacrosse's bday for like 2 weeks right?

That makes me want to vomit. And heck yes I'd take that thing now if that was me. Summer would be the most amazing thing!

And yep, the 18th  cpa is like my grandma (not because of age... don't be mad! 😛) because my grandma likes to send presents like a week in advance.

Just got my core clerkship schedule... this kid's got surgery first! :scared:
I think it will be okay, though. Everyone says get med before surg because the shelf is a lot of medicine... but if everyone I'm w/ has never taken med, then it will be fine. Plus, maybe I'll be w/ people who don't want to go into surgery.

Here's my schedule: Surgery, 8 weeks of elective, basic science block, Medicine, Winter Break, Women and Children's Health (peds and ob/gyn... just dunno the order), basic science block, 2 weeks of elective, Mind, Brain and Behavior (psych and neuro... dunno the order), basic science block. We pick electives in a couple weeks.

You guys know yours' yet?

And yep, the 18th  cpa is like my grandma

bahahahaha!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

We "rank" our schedules then wait and see. It's more difficult when you have more than 50 people in your class lacrosse 😛

I'm trying to get surgery and medicine later on (second semester or later), as I guess I'm going with the logic of things you're interested in do later. Hopefully having family medicine, neuro or psych early on.

We ranked ours last week. We had 16 options. And hey, we have 104 in my class 😛

That was my logic, too, which is why it's good I have OB/GYN and peds right after winter break. Although I'll be on peds when all the kiddies are sick!

They moved them all back 🙁

Our reign was short lived, but will never be forgotten 😎

do any of you know if there are any texas schools that won't accept oos students even for application purposes? I have heard yes and no. i thought it was a no although its a lot harder for oos students to get acceptance. thanks for the help!

They all pretty much take the max of 10 percent. Don't know anything about the new one that just opened in elpaso, but don't see why they'd be any different.

Happy tax day, cpa 😉

Aw, thanks guys. Other than "oh, yeah, I need to finish Mom & Dad's return" and "oops, I still need one more thing for it. I guess I'll have to extend it" I hardly thought about it. 🙄

They will all take people for application purposes. By law no more than 10% of the class can be out-of-state, but they will talk to you and take your money. From what I've heard, most of the classes run about 7% OOS. As I recall, the TMDSAS site has the stats on in-state/out-of-state applications and acceptances. Good luck!!:luck:

I hope everyone remembered lacrosse's b-day 😉

So when is everyone finished up?

I remembered! 😛

Technically May 17th... that's when we have 3rd year orientation. But we don't have class May 13th or 14th... so I guess May 12th.

Yay, new page!
