Out of state schools

I'm fairly new to researching the applying process and different schools for PT as I still have a little way to go before applying. However, can anyone give me some insight as to how likely schools accept out of state students due to such small class sizes of PT? I'm sure schools vary but is it unlikely to get in somewhere out of state?

While there are some schools that give preference to in state students, I have found that they are in the minority. Schools are much more concerned with getting the most potentially successful (high stat) applicants into their program, no matter where they are from. Also, many of the schools are private so they really have no preference. The three schools from which I have received the most interest included one school in my state of residency, and two schools totally far away from where I live. The best leg up you can give yourself is completing your pre-requisites with high grades and really focusing on your GRE prep. Best of luck! 🙂

Take a look at PTCAS because they show the percentage of in and out of state students each school you are interested in admits. The stats are typically from the last years entering class. And most, but not all schools don't care at all where you're from, rather they care about how competitive of an applicant you are. Hope that helps.

There are certain schools that rarely accept out of state students (for example: ECU), but there are also a plethora of schools that care more about stats and admitting the best potential class than residency status. I just got into NAU as an out of state student which, from what I'm told, is relatively difficult...I earned the grades, spent time studying for my GRE, made sure to take the time to craft an insightful personal essay, and prepared for the interview....and now I will be attending my top choice. In sum, you can't control a school's in vs out of state policy but you can control your grades, GRE, recommendations, personal statements, and interview knowledge. Be effective in those and you will get into schools.

Yeah definitely check PTCAS. Generally it doesn't matter for private schools, but for many state schools it will matter to a varying degree.

For example, Arkansas State doesn't do interviews or require the GRE, all they look at is give you a number using a formula with your GPA total and last 60 hours GPA. I have a 3.96 overall and 4.0 last 60 hours and ended up 30th on their wait list because Arkansas State undergrads get 15 extra points and Arkansas residents get an extra 10 points on their application formula, and I'm from Tennessee.

As a A Nc student I applied to all the NC schools and several out of state. I got into 3/5 of the out of state schools now. Wait listed by 1 of those I didn't get into. I applied to all but duke in Nc and was rejected (pending wssu which I haven't heard from at all). So I feel from my personal exp that out of state somewhat increases chances because many (not all some give preference to instate as acj13 said) try to fill a 1/10 out of state quota that some states require (again not all states). Also not everyone applies out of state. my first year (this is my secondish starting into 3rd) I applied only instate thinking I would get in SOMEWHERE boy was I wrong.

Point being apply everywhere and anywhere u think u have a chance including some u don't think u can get into (i am attending the school I thought was my least likely to get into but was rejected by schools I thought were basically safety schools). PTCAS makes this lot easier
