I am an out of stater and waiting to hear from OUCOM, anybody waiting like or me anyone that has received an interview invite from OUCOM.

I am an outsider and i am waiting too. I have been complete since early september, and haven't heard anything from them yet.

Do you really wanna have to fullfill that 5 year requirement?

I still haven't heard anything as well. Don't they first look at IS before OS. So maybe January/February for us OSers?

I don't mind fulfilling the contract because of these alternatives to fulfiling it (found on their website):

If an OU-COM graduate who has signed an Out-of-State Admission Contract in order to be admitted to the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine competes an internship and residency program in a primary care generalists discipline (family medicine, general internal medicine and pediatrics) in an Ohio AOA approved postgraduate program, they will be eligible to apply for a waiver for one (1) and one half years credit for each postgraduate year, provided that the entire program is completed. If the waiver is approved their five (5) year obligation to practice medicine in Ohio will be fulfilled. There will be no proration for partial completion of the postgraduate program. Note: An AOA approved program is defined as a CORE (Centers for Osteopathic Research & Education) program in the state of Ohio.

If an OU-COM graduate who has signed an Out-Of-State Admission Contract in order to be admitted to the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine completes a residency program in a specialty field other than primary care in an Ohio AOA approved postgraduate program, they will be eligible to apply for a waiver to receive credit for one (1) year for each year completed in the residency program in a specialty field (based on the entire program being completed in a CORE program) towards their obligation to practice medicine full-time for five (5) years in the State of Ohio. Graduates completing a CORE internship prior to their specialty residency will be eligible to apply for (1) year credit for the completion of the internship. If the entire completed postgraduate internship and specialty residency is less than (5) years in duration, the graduate approved for a year for a year waiver will be allowed to 'buy out' the remaining year(s) of the (5) year obligation, according to the provisions of the Out-of-State Admissions Contract signed upon admission to the college. There will be no proration for partial completion of the postgraduate program. Note: An AOA approved program is defined as a CORE program in the state of Ohio.

my plan is to do number 1 so i don't mind the contract.

sounds from this website (www.citl.ohiou.edu/provost/strategies/OU-COMSP2-17-06.doc) under the heading: Issue #8 Diversity and 1.4 that out of state admits are usually underrepresented minority students (URMs), which is why i was hoping i have chance since i am asian and OUCOM considers asians URM's.

I'm OOS, too and have heard nothing. I've been complete since mid or late October. The 5 year obligation doesn't bother me at all.

i'm also out of state and haven't heard. the 5 yr contract does make me a little anxious, but i figured i would worry about it if/when the time came.

Hey Guys,

Im OOS and was invited to interview in January 2007. I was complete early november and contacted by mail early december.
Hope that helps!!!

Good Luck everyone.

Oh yeah, the OOS contract doesn't bother me at all, as already stated it can be as short as a 3 year contract if you do a AOA primary care residency.

hey amboree, are you an underrepresented minority (african-american, hispanic, american indian or asian/pacific islander)?

Hi ppormansdoormd

To answer your question, Yes I am an URM.

I haven't heard anything either....but the contract isnt that bad because Ohio has to be in the top 3 states for DO residency opportunities, so its one of the better places to get stuck in.

amboree, did u give a letter of rec from a DO?

from what i have found out, out of staters are usually URM's so that's i have hope since I am an URM.

This is from a report that they filed this year called OUCOM Strategic Plan:

ASSUMPTION: Historically, the College offered out-of-state tuition waivers to all underrepresented students admitted to the College. URMs are primarily out- of-state admits who must fulfill the out-of-state contract. Currently, the College is limited to 7 out-of-state waivers and $20,000 of general scholarship funds to incoming URMs. Tuition and fees have increased from $12,714 in academic year 1999 to $20,061 in 2003. This is an increase of increase of $7,347 in less than 5 years.

ppormansdoormd,
I was offered the interview without a DO letter. At the time I was offered the interview I submitted a letter from my boss/mentor who is an MD, and several other letters. My DO letter probably just got there today.
Thanks for the info about the OOS fee waiver that is awesome!
