Hi There,

Im going out of my mind here, waiting for this "Getting Into Dental School" thing to be over 😕 . These are my DAT scores: QR:17 ,GC:21, OC:21, BIO:19, RC:20, PA:15, TS:20, AA:20. My GPA: 3.6, (I applied early, around June)

I got interviews in all the In-state schools real early and some out-state schools too. Now the problem is that I want to get into North Carolina dental school (which is essential for my survival cause my future wife lives there now 🙁 😍 ) and that would make me as an out-state applicant.

I haven't heard back from UNC yet and they had 2 rounds of interview so far. I was wondeing what you all think about my chance to get there?or anywhere at all...

Love you all and good luck to all of us 👍

UNC seems to hate out of staters. I've seen many SDNers with superb records (out-of-staters) who haven't received an invite from UNC. I've noticed one or two SDNers (NC residents) with low scores (e.g. as low as RC = 12) who have received an invite from UNC.

I had a friend (from Florida) get in to Harvard and a BIG FAT rejection from UNC.

yeah i've heard UNC is kind of rough on out of staters. it's a shame too, because i wanted to apply there myself.

realistically, you have a chance, but not a very good one. you would be VERY competitive as a NC resident... almost assured acceptance in fact... but as an out of stater, i'm guessing they like 21-22+ and something else that really stands out about an applicant.

i've heard the same about UNC, very tough on out of state applicants....you did apply early though, which is a plus. i mean the worst that happens is you don't get in, you can always work at UNC for a year or in NC and gain residency for the next app cycle or something.

Oooh..It Sucks..I guess I should have took my DAT again :scared:

Let me just say that UNC is my first choice and I'm kind of freaking out because I'm in the same boat as most of the other out-of-staters. Maybe I'll just have to go live there next year.

Maybe I should send a cake with my AADSAS number written in icing across the top? What say ye? Two layers or three?

Oh wait! I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner. I'll send an ice sculpture of a tooth with my A number carved into the face!

-let me know if you guys hear anything.

If you are going to live any where, live in GA.... Here is the list of Pre-Reqs from the Medical College of Georgia.

1. Must be GA resident
2. Must have completed 2nd Grade
3. Applicant should be alive, however dead applicants who have completed prereqs 1 and 2 will be given serious consideration.

get a divorce, dental school is more important than a woman. That for damn sure!

He said *future* wife and it is very true: no woman is worth your education 😉 And if a spouse is stopping you from your dreams, let me tell you this: you are with the wrong person! 😡

Did you tell them that you are planning to get married? Can she go where you go? Both my BIL and his wife are in med school applying for their residency. If they get accepted at 2 different hospitals, guess what they are going to do? Go where ever they have to. Sometimes you just have no choice 🙁 And they have been married for 5 yrs.

dont want to discourage you, however, I think your PAT score is going to hurt you even if you apply to an in-state school.

15 is pretty bad.

UNC will clearly not even call you for an interview if you have a 15 on the PAT. They have a cutoff for out of staters and its above a 15 for sure.

Its nothing about she is stopping me or stuff like that,Its just that it would be more comfortable for us to stay in NC..forget about it...

my PAT is bad, I know it..I dont know what happened,,but you know what? They didnt ask me a single question about it,like it never exist..we will see..

...dont call my family like that please

PAT is not that big of a deal if you do well in other parts. some schools dont care at all.

You guys are just mean. Without God and family, you have nothing.

When keeping it real goes wrong...

Reminds me of a Dave Chappelle episode.

God is everywhere and not just in North Carolina.

She is not his family, they are not married.

We should refer to SHE as the one with the "tail."

You will never have anything if not admitted to dental school.

AND YES, a 15 is horrible on the PAT section. 😡

a predent friend of mine told me that to complete second grade in georgia you have to be able to do partial differential equations and fluid mechanics. is this true?

I love these UNC threads...UNC is tough to get into as a non-resident (speaking as one who got lucky and got in form out-of-state). In large part b/c it's so inexpensive (I'll graduate about ~125K in debt with a wife and 2 kids). All the non-residents in my class that I know had a 23-ish average on the DAT...and that was 4 years ago (so take DAT inflation into account). Sure NC gives preference to residents--it's a state-supported school. Lucky for those kids with NC residency it happens to be a pretty darn good one. 🙂

Many do this.

And to save having to post several times to elucidate other points made in this thread:

And ignore Justindent...dental school is 4 years. A wife (if you choose well and are willing to work at a marriage) will last the rest of your life. My grades went up the day I got married, and up even more once I had kids. The balance has helped me a bunch. "get a divorce, dental school is more important than a woman. That for damn sure!" has to be the dumbest thing IMO that I've ever read on SDN.

Oh, and the comment about the cut-off for the PAT at 15 also has no basis (I wonder at times where people get their info). True as said, your DAT is low, but there's no minimum that I'm aware of (speaking as a member of the NC adcom).

So, how many of you are actually applying here...just curious. 🙂 Best kept dental school secret in the US.

I'm taking a shot at UNC from out-of-state ... I love the area, and wanted to go there for undergrad, but couldn't afford it. It's the only interview I'm going to that I made sure my wife tagged along on, so hopefully she sees why I threw our money at a reach school. I was really impressed that they incorporate the wives in a reception AND a meeting or two about finances/school the day-of the interview, so she doesn't have to sit in the hotel all day (which is 15 miles away, of course, because my interview is this Saturday ... same day as a home game).

Amen. What are you working for if not for the love and well-being of your family? Move to NC. get a job in a lab at UNC or work in a dental office. retake the DAT because PAT scores do matter and marry your love now. Carolinians do not like out of staters unless you ROCKED the DAT and undergrad work. GOOD LUCK!!! :luck:

We are on the same page man,,you know what I mean? I agree with you 100%. My best wishes to you.

Did you mean in general that my DAT is low or you meant it for UNC? I got interview in all the In-State schools and some out-state schools...If I get admission in UNC then ***** 👍 , if not I was wondering about my chances to actually get admission somewhere else.

I am another one of the lucky out-of-staters who got in 🙂 Besides the PAT and QR you and I have similar stats, so your chances are as good as mine were (plus 2 years of inflation 😉 ). Don't give up on UNC, as it truly is the best school in town! If you are concerned, try giving the admissions office a call for an update on your status (919-966-4451). Let them know how badly you want to come here!

pibozh: our dat are almost identical, except my pat is 21.

unc have about 15 or 16 non-residents with high enough dat scores to pull the avg dat to 20. i heard for instater avg is about 17 or so, and i don't know this true, but if you can imagine pulling 2-3 avg dat scores w/ only 16 non-residents versus 65 residents whose avg dat is 18. (this is a great QR question.. haha)

i think on avg. you are looking at 24's for non-residents.
but i'm just assuming..

i'm thankful that i qualify as nc resident.. having great school in my home town is such a privilege me thinks..

i feel the same way about the texas schools.

PAT of 15 is low for UNC. Can't speak for other programs for sure (though 'd guess it's on the low end most places).

I have been following the thread and am also an out-of-state UNC applicant. I have a 3.90 gpa with a 20AA/22TS/19PAT. I have called Tami Rice enough that I feel I should know her kids. I know that they have reviewed my app for the Nov 19 interview and I was not invited. Should I forget my hopes or hold on for the Jan interview? My application was sent out Sept 9th, submitted Aug 10th.

September is pretty late for out of state apps to be received. Slight chance for January, but to be honest I'd recommend focusing on other places at present.
