To add something different to this forum, I thought I would start this thread.

So, what interests or hobbies do you have that are outside the realm of medicine? Also, any cool talents?

I suppose I'll start.

I'm a big Trekkie. Personally, my favorite series is Star Trek Voyager, though I'm sure some of you other Trekkies would disagree with me. I also enjoy watching M*A*S*H.
I like to read a lot of mostly nonfiction related to history, specifically the Civil War, medicine (I know I said outside the realm, but meh.) and beyond.
I played alto sax from 5th grade to my freshman year of college. At one point, I played the bass sax which had a bell large enough to fit a basketball inside.
I also enjoy playing video/computer games. Right now, I've been playing a lot of Natural Selection II.
I can't really think of any spectacular talents I have, but one of my greatest joys is teaching, especially science and English. I have a real passion for it and hope to do more teaching in the future.
I SCUBA dive whenever I get the chance.

In the words of Bubba Gump, that's... that's about it.

Edit: Oh yeah, 80s music!

I build motorcycles and play guitar. Also when it's cold outside I like to play Aion.

Backpacking, Family, Guns, Outdoor adventure 🙂

working out when I get the chance...haha....would love to start P90X...just need to make the time 🙂

I have a lot of hobbies because I'm indecisive, weird, and get bored quickly. I play the viola, knit, crochet, draw, paint, scrapbook, and just like making things in general. I enjoy reading things that aren't textbooks when I have the time. I also love animals, especially reptiles, amphibians and birds. I go bird-watching a few times a week at various places. It sounds boring, I know, but there is actually a lot more to it than just staring at birds. It's fun for me to get better and better at identifying all of the different species and discovering new ones that are here to visit, and it keeps me in that "learning" mode. They're also quite beautiful if you can get a good look at them. I really love reptiles but don't talk about it as much because it isn't always well-received.

I swear I'm 24 and not 90!

Snowboarding in the winter, I like to run obstacle courses like Tough Mudder which consequently makes me work out during some of my free time. I am trying to get back into home beer brewing but it's been tough as I would like to replace my fermentation tank with a bigger glass one and those don't come cheap.

I'm pretty big into tennis and golf when the weather permits, which here is only like 7 months out of the year. I like to play video games as my unwinding activity before bed, with some of my favorites being the KH series, Skyrim, COD, and BF4. I would say I like to read, but during school I have a problem with getting a few hundred pages into a book and never finishing it (done this with The Stand, Atlas Shrugged, and a few others). Other than that the rest of my free time goes into hanging out with my wife whenever I can.

I'm a fan of running, traveling, listening to non-club rap music with multi-syllable rhymes, hanging out with friends, and not doing anything

I love cooking to a level that shouldn't be legal. Backpacking is probably my favorite thing to do. I pick two countries that are a thousand plus miles apart and buy an outbound flight to one and an inbound flight from the other and just wander with no plan in between. I like music, and especially love the challenge of finding decent new material. Sifting through hours of garbage to find that one song that will be on your playlist till you die is a satisfying feeling. Live shows are always a high point of my month. I'm getting pretty good at mixing drinks, even though I've sworn off drinking for myself for the time being. To keep my geek cred I run a D&D campaign every other week. Trying to get back into fitness, I really want to hit the 1k lifting club someday, but with my frame, it isn't realistic. Won't stop me from trying though!

Líft weights, exercise, bball, vídeo games, and reading . I do more but not on a reg basis. Lol

The Force.

(Cue "he said outside of medicine, OMM doesn't count" replies)

I'm a fan of exercise and outdoor activities. I have been volunteering since the age of 11, so I genuinely enjoy volunteering for anything that fits into my work and school schedule. I spend time with my children as much as possible. I learned to unicycle when I was 8, but I stopped and am now trying to learn again. 🙂

I run a lot, I lift but not as much as I run. I enjoy lots of outdoor stuff trail running, hiking, fishing, I need lots of outdoor time, warm weather, and sunlight to stay sane. I play video games but the retro type( mortal Kombat 2,street fighter, killer instinct, Mario etc), I enjoy horror movies and psychological thrillers and of course, like every other type A nerd, I like to read. would love to travel, but I just don't have the money. Things I wanna learn=piano, how to swim, how to shoot.

haha so i guess im the a*^hole in the room but I coach crossfit at a few gyms... love working out and trying new outdoor activites. I have specifically been really into the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. Outside of that I run with a few volunteer fire companies... do the EMT thing, and just enjoy relaxing with friends alongside a few beverages 😉.

Hike, read, gardening, working out, traveling and spending time with my family.

As the old saying goes "it's like riding a bicycle...you never forget." Does that only half apply to a unicycle? 😵

Sorry for the awful joke... other than bad humor, I tend to enjoy any form of exercise, ice hockey, golf, playing the guitar, and brewing my own beer. I've been on a couple road trips around the US to tour and check out some of the various craft breweries... wouldn't mind owning one some day.

Exactly! Haha. I don't know how long it will take for me to be able to ride again, but I intend on being the freak of the community and unicycle to class one day.

Basketball, watching NBA games while doing homework, I'm very interested in the prison life (like the psychological effects it has on people, like documentaries etc. especially after watching Prison Break), I love watching gangster mob movies like GoodFellas, etc., I'm also interested in the Vietnam, Korean, and World War 2, I have seen countless movies/documentaries of them. I used to be an avid gamer but I just stopped lately because I do not have the same time I used to. This past summer I did play video games like 3 hours a day in my last 2 weeks only because I got off the two volunteer positions and classes I were taken which easily took up about 70 hours a week. Since it was the summer, during weekends, I would go outside and do activities. I was a video game nerd throughout middle school and high school. For that reason, I regret not being as social as I could have been. So I always think of other options to do nowadays on lets say a Friday night but if I can't find anything, I might play counter strike on my computer for an hour and then go to bed or do homework.

Dude, there is always time for video games.
Even in med school.

I'm not even kidding - when I first got to med school, I met a 2nd year who told me he had to play at least one game of SC2 on ladder every night.

My free-time is a bit shot to hell in residency, but in medical school I climbed mountains/hiked around washington state, started to learn how to sail, and played video games (everquest (back in the day of Sullon Zek), civilization 4, NWN2, etc). Now, I hang with the wife, workout at the gym, watch movies/ancient aliens on history channel (freakin hilarious), take classes outside of residency (CERT team, basic disaster life support) and just joined the Freemasons so I am working on becoming a Master Mason.

3.5 (Pathfinder). I'd love to run a 2nd edition game, it was the first system I DMed, but everyone already knows 3rd, and they really aren't down for learning THAC0 etc lol. Damn I miss 2nd edition paladins and rangers, back when being either one was kind of a big deal.

You know "the ring that controls them all" from the Lord of the Rings. I was jokingly saying I will put it as a profile picture to drive you avatar insane 😉. Just trying to make a joke, I guess I was unclear with what I was trying to say.

NBA 2k14 on the PS4...that is all!
I still have NBA 2k11 for my 360. Too lazy to buy any new ones. I used to do My Player. Had a shooting guard averaging 35/5/5 with the Magic. Did the MJ create a legend mod and put it on pro level for fun. Averaging 70/10/15/8 steals/3 blocks. It's hilarious, we are 54-0. I have a lot of trouble guarding smaller guards especially Monte Ellis.
