This is an honest question/concern.

Today I was in one of my school's computer lab and I over-heard a conversation (this lab is extremely small...fits maybe 7 people at the most) between two fourth year students. One student was talking about how s/he just got an interview at an allopathic program and was shocked because when s/he tried to schedule a rotation there s/he had to really be aggressive because they kept giving him/her the cold shoulder basically and told him/her-quote- "You osteopathic students have a different schedule and it makes it difficult blah blah blah" This person did eventually rotate at this hospital (this person is at the top of their class from the sounds of the conversation). My question is that is this common among allopathic institutions for their clinical programs to 'snuff' D.O. students? I thought that program would be more professional than that...guess not?!!?

Only a few places have been known to "give the cold shoulder" to DO students in the past. Of these, many [if not all] have been made to govern themselves accordingly as a result of legal action by the AOA.

Also keep in mind that you heard one snippet of a conversation that may have a year's worth of background. Don't read into something like that too much. I'm certain this occurs, but it is quite rare (if only for the simple reason that most schools are at least cordial and/or would prefer to avoid a lawsuit). Most people I know that have rotated around have had no trouble whatsoever.

Thanks for your responses....I just didn't want to have to worry about that sort of discrimination...I have heard of it being more difficult to obtain a residency at more competitive programs but not to rotate through.
