I've been a pediatrician in the USA for the past 7 years. My wife, who is British, has decided that she would like to once again live in the UK. I need some advice on how to go about getting a job in the UK. Is it better to look for the jobs myself or go through an agency? What about this PLAB test? Does it make a difference if I'm boarded in Pediatrics? What's up with the English test, considering I was born in the USA and have spoken English for the past 45 years? I'm looking for a Pediatric Consultant position in a teaching hospital. I already posted this on the attending site too. Thanks for your help in advance

Hi

The best thing would be to enquire with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

www.rcpch.ac.uk

I don't know whether they accept US Board Certified Attendings as equivalent training. You need to be on the specialist register with the GMC in paediatrics in order to begin applying for Consultant Posts ie. complete RCPCH recognised training in the UK. Alternative route includes the arcticle 14 route, again from the GMC.

Teaching Hospital Consultant posts will be more difficult to obtain than compared to DGH (District General Hospital). "District" can be only 20-30mins drive away from major cities, so don't let the name fool you. There are many excellent DGH units where you can practise good medicine.

The english test is for anyone not from the UK or EU (european union).

You can look for jobs at www.bmjcareers.com

Good Luck! :)
