If a pharmacist in a retail setting wanted to work 50-60 hours a week for extra income would the overtime be available? A friend told me that alot of the retail stores don't like to give out overtime so they limit pharmacists to 40 hours a week. That doesn't seem correct to me though.

It depends how desperate they are. It is true that most places try to limit you to 40 hours per week, but if they need someone to open a store they will use anyone they can get. I know many pharmacists who have no problems finding lots of overtime within chains.

Pharmacists at walgreens certainly don't have trouble finding extra hours.

There are other reasons for limiting overtime outside the pay issues.

As GravyRPH could probably relate as well, if you screw up royally (i.e. draw a Board complaint) during voluntary overtime, the penalties are generally harsher. At least for AZ that is....

A company that "forces" overtime contributes to an "unsafe work environment" and they can plowed when it comes to fines. Both the Wals (Wal-Mart and Walgreens) have learned this the very hard way.

As a pharmacist, you must understand your finances. You must control your work or it will control you.
