Upon ovulation in female humans, the oocyte is released into the....



Oviduct or Body Cavity?


The answer is apparently body cavity, but I thought it released into the oviduct and then implanted in the body cavity (endometrium)?

Am I wrong?

I don't know what happens to the oocyte but I know that it's ovum that is released to the oviduct so maybe you got confused between ovum and oocyte.
oocyte are little dots surrounding ovum.

I had the same question today. Topscore test 3. I answered oviduct but apparently the ovary and oviduct may not be exactly connected so it releases the egg into body cavity and the oviduct pulls it in with cilia pulling in fluid. is this correct?

This is correct. The egg is released into the body cavity. On rare ocasions you will have an ectopic pregnancy in the abdominal cavity. Very rarely do they go to term though.

The question didn't have anything to do with ectopic pregnancy. Just ovulation. During ovulation, the egg ruptures from the ovaries into the body cavity, and the fallopian tubes suck it in so to say with their cilia. In any case I though that ectopic pregnancy occurs in the fallopian tubes and the blastocyst never goes to the uterus. Or so my women's studies classes have told me 🙂

I understand the questtion didn't have to do with ectopic pregnancies. I used that as a point to show that the egg is released into the body cavity. The cilia from the oviduct normally pull it it. Any pregnancy that is not normal (uteran implantation) is considered ectopic. The majority of those are in the fallopian tubes.

🙂 I was messaging in response to the poster above me ... So you're saying ectopic = not in uterus; that makes sense.

During ovulation, the egg is released into the abdominal cavity (or body cavity) and then the cilia in the oviduct set up currents to draw the egg into the fallopian tube.

fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube/oviduct.
