Chad says that oxidant/reductant can only be the REACTANT of a reaction.
Is that true? He doesn't delve any further into it, so I'm posting it up here..

So when we're looking for either the "oxidant" or "reductant", we just look at the reactants to see which one is becoming *reduced or *oxidized, respectively? and not the products, at all?

Hey!

I remember Chad saying that in one of his Gen Chem vids as well. I believe that is what he meant, however, if you take into account both the forward and reverse reactions, technically the products will also become reactants. Whatever is being ox/red in the forward will become red/ox in the reverse, respectively. However, if you are just looking at one direction of the reactions, most likely the forward, then yes, only the reactants are the ox/red agents. Taking the quiz at the end of that vid should help further explain that concept as well.

Hope that helps!
