Why does copper (Cu) has an oxidation state of +2 in Cu(NH3)4^2+ ?

Why does copper (Cu) has an oxidation state of +2 in Cu(NH3)4^2+ ?

nitrogen: -3
hydrogen +1 each

so inside the parenthesis (-3)+(+1)*3, which is zero, zero to the fourth is zero, so Cu has to be +2 to get an overall +2 charge.

I agree ammonia does not have a charge. The only charge is on the copper which is +2.

👍 Shortcuts like these really can make a difference in PS too.
