In the following reaction, how many statements are true?

2 Cl^-1 (aq) ---> Cl2 (aq)

(In words... two moles of chloride anions in aqueous solution ---> 2 moles of chlorine in aqueous solution.)


Statements:

Cl is reduced

Each Cl loses 2 electrons

Each Cl gaines 1 electron

Cl is the reducing agent

a) 2 b) 3 c) 0 d) 4 e) 1


Incidentally, I put c) 0 for this question and got it wrong. Erghhh. Explain your answer, whichever one you choose.
 
i could be completely wrong but:

2Cl- ----> Cl2(aq)

oxidation number going from -1 to 0 therefore follow the rule of thumb: losing electrons oxidation, gaining electrons reduction (LEO the lion says GER) 😉

Cl is getting oxidized, therefore it is the reducing agent. so statement one is wrong, statement 4 is right. each Cl is only losing 1 electron, so statements two and three are wrong. therefore right answer E??

someone correct me if i'm totally off...i'm rusty on mcat stuff already!!!

Yes, the last statement is the only correct one.
