is pass/fail really pass/fail or do competitive residency programs ask schools for students' class rank (or test scores, etc)?

While I feel that students should strive to master material and aim for top grades, it seems unfair that residency programs could evaluate us based on a number most people don't know would be disclosed.

Some schools are non ranking, and say that they will not release rank. Most schools keep tabs on your rank though, for designation of honors and the like, although they may never release your specific rank number depending upon their policy. However, LCME suggests that schools standardize their deans letters, so previous non ranking schools are now releasing information as to what quartile you are in.

I don't think residency directors actually ask for specific test scores other than your board scores, as school and departmental exams would be impossible to standardize with shelf exams, etc.

most schools have some kind of ranking.

I've seen very few schools that are true pass/fail, as well. Most are Honors/Pass/Fail or some permutation thereof. Most abandon any pretense of being pass/fail at all during the clinical years. I haven't heard of any that are true pass/fail at that point - although there are probably at least one or two out there.

They have a record of where in the class you stand for each exam - regardless of P/HP/H/F being the "official" score, so it's still easy for them to release a bracketed rank (upper quartile, lower 10%) after 4 years.

I wouldn't sweat it anyhow -- the whole first two years more or less turn on the Step 1 scores anyhow. If you honor everything but tank that, it probably closes just as many doors as the person who barely passed the basic science years.

NYU is completely pass/fail and no rankings for the first two years

Same for Pritzker, and 4th year is P/F too.
