I'm in medical school and have a question:

We have Pass/Fail in our first year and Honors/Pass/Fail in our second year (ie pathology, micro, pharm). Did anyone notice people working significantly harder starting with Honors/Pass/Fail and the difficulty of tests or the mean increasing? I'm a bit worried about how hard second year will be with the "increased competition"

We have the same system in my school. The P/F year was great, but when you have that H hanging over your head, everyone becomes a gunner. The second year material is more interesting, but it's not harder than first year material. I haven't noticed them increasing the difficulty of exams much either. For example, our last two exams have had a mean of 90. Maybe it's just me, but I think that's a little crazy.

Thanks for replying :) So people started working harder but the tests stayed the same difficulty.. does that mean the mean increased and everyone is getting honors? Do people still help eachother out?

Also, any other views?

Mean will increase for sure. That H goes a long way in terms of motivation.
