For those of you who got accepted, I'm curious how many of you sent a letter of intent, letter of interest, or nothing at all?

Sent thank you note to admissions office a few days after my interview (handed it in since I live nearby), emailed thank you to my interviewer. In a moment of panic/weakness, emailed my interviewer in mid Jan telling him that Columbia is still a top choice for me. Never did LOI.

For their last interview day in March. Yale is/was my #1 dream school. The only school I would choose over Columbia.

i guess i'll know by end of march.

Bonnie, you're tearing it up. Congrats and good luck. 🙂

This thread kinda drifted into oblivion for a while there...

Hi future classmates! This is my first SDN post. Am wondering - are you all going to P&S for the second-look weekend? I'll definitely be there. I currently live in Washington, DC and am an AmeriCorps VISTA for a healthcare non-profit group. I graduated from college in 1999, majored in English Literature, and then moonlighted as an investment banker for three years. I went back to school two years ago to take the pre-med requirements and am now eagerly anticipating starting at P&S. I'm looking forward to meeting you all!

I received the housing application packet today. It's on it's way. If you want the nice rooms, mail it back ASAP.

Hey guys,
I thought I drop in and try to revive this thread for a bit. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer!!!!!
I received a big packet of info in the mail from Student Affairs today. I usually receive mail from P&S the next day but this was dated on the 4th, so I?m sure a lot of you got it by now. If it hasn?t gotten to you or if it was ?mistakenly? misplaced by the student affairs office?it contained general info about computing (a lot of complicate info about connecting to the internet, but basically the only info you need to know is that you can get your email account on July 1st), orientation (as we all probably know by now it starts on the 23rd and the white coat is on the 27th and they plan to have a lot of fun activities 🙂 ), required summer reading (The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down), a couple of forms to submit during the summer (research experience questionnaire, name tag info, and disability release form) Hippocratic oath, academic calendar, and a campus and community guide with some more info about campus life.

I?m actually now more excited then nervous about med school!!! But I?m sure this will turn around when it gets closer to August.

Also, it seems like a lot of the people here are planning to live off campus and I wanted to which you good luck finding a great place. I?ll be in Bard (hopefully I?ll get a nice room) and for anyone else who filled out the housing application they do send a confirmation when they received your request by mail. Just in case you didn?t get one you should probably call.

Also, I didn?t send in my CUID picture yet (I always hate taking passport pictures?. they never tell me when their going to take it). If you haven?t, I received a letter telling me to take one ASAP.

Well, that?s all the new info I have. Keep on having a relaxing summer because we?ll probably won?t have time to relax until winter break once classes begin. See you guys in August. 🙂

Thanks for all the info, Marimed. 🙂 I'm currently subletting in Durham, NC for the summer (since moving out of my old place at the end of last month), and my mail is *supposed* to be forwarded to me for the next couple of months... I have yet to see any mail for the past 10 days, however.

My next two months will consist of copious amounts of pleasure reading, travel, sunbathing, and just plain old enjoying myself. I'm quitting my lab job at the end of July and am spending most of August in Burlington, VT at my boyfriend's place... and then making the big move to the city! I'll also be living in Bard... hope to hear back soon about specifics....

Glad someone revived this thread!

So it looks like we're able to get our email addresses now even though the letter in the packet gave the date of July 1st.

Just wondering... any of you planning on withdrawing with you get off the waitlist at another school? Just wondering if the list is gonna move at all... thanks.

I didn't create a new account just reactivated my UNI... you can just use the one you have now. I bet since you graduated so recently you don't need to do a thing. I actually just fixed my alumni forwarding problem, so now I can receive new mail

Hey guys,
I was unable to recieve the packet that was mailed out recently, currently on vacation and I will be gone for the next couple of weeks. Are we urgently required to fill out any forms prior to the orientation in august. Also, any news on the bard housing .
Bonnie, thanks on all your e.mail updates

The only deadline that I saw was July 15th to hand in your name tag info form. I'm not sure if there was a deadline on the disability and research interest form.

Have a nice vacation.

What's the disability form? I've seen other schools send a "here's what we expect you to do physically in med school, sign that you can do it or else let us know your restrictions." I didn't get anything like this.

I think the photo ID form is the most important; without that, no ID, and no picture in the facebook.

there's also:
  • physical & immunizations, signed by an MD -- do this before your prior health insurance runs out if possible
  • application for the housing application, which they say should be sent by certified USPS or fedex/dhl/ups. (I called the office, and the housing lady insisted this was necessary because "sometimes it gets lost." Note that all you're sending is a request-for-a-request with your address on it. bureaucracy!)
  • finaid, of course.

Does anyone know if CoSMO succeeded in getting an operations extension in May?

Yeah, I noticed the small group sessions and was wondering why no one mentioned them during the revisit weekend. I wonder what their format will be like.

Also, I found out that CoSMO will be around next year! 🙂

What is CoSMO?

It's the student-run free clinic that started this past year. it was featured in the P&S Magazing Spring/Summer issue.

Hey folks!

I'm having terrible mail issues this summer, and things are getting to me wayyyy late. As in, I *just* got the packet about the required reading, email, etc.

Was wondering if people would mind posting when they get the orientation/white coat order form/etc packet we're supposed to be getting in "mid July"... so I can find out if I'm still getting screwed over by USPS!

Thanks all. 🙂

Hey

I just got the white coat invite in the mail today.

I haven't gotten anything but the admit packet and finaid so far. no required reading or white coat stuff.

the req reading (plus a ton of other stuff) came in June. Call the office. Lots o' important info in that packet.

Does anyone have any ideas about what the "welcome wagon" has planned for us 1st years? It seems to me that orientation week is gonna be a semesters worth of partying packed into one week - and then goodbye social life. Whatya think?

I don't know about the welcome wagon, but people I talked to at revisit said there is definitely room for a social life... especially with the block exams every 6 weeks. It all depends on what you make time for, how you prioritize, etc. One of the reasons I picked P&S is because they emphasize life outside the classroom.

However, like you said...orientation sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun! 😀

just FYI: the required reading is "the spirit catches you and you fall down" by anne fadiman. i found it on half.com and amazon for under ten bucks.

an aside: i'm hoping i still get things in the mail. it feels like i've moved about a million times over the past few months and i'm not sure all of my mail is following me. (unfortunately the bills seem to have no problem catching up!)

see you all soon 🙂

I was only half serious about the disappearance of a social life once school starts - I know that P&S students are known for getting involved in activities besides studying, which is fantastic.

Are there any events planned for Mon. the 23rd? Just wondering so that I can book my flight out accordingly.
-JFK Rules, LaGuardia is a close second, and Islip is just trash

The only thing I've seen is that's when Bard opens for us. Anyone else know?

I've always been a LaGuardia girl myself, but JetBlue flies into Kennedy which, incidentally, is also connected to the A train 😀

I found out that they'll let us move in up to a couple of days early; so I'm moving in on the 21st so that I can have more time to figure out what I need and explore the city before I surrender my free will to the schedule.

Hopefully, I'll be done setting up my room and can offer a helping hand to those of you arriving later--except Sarah, whom I categorically refuse to help.

Don't be fooled by Edward's seemingly helpful veneer... he is proving to be the most UNneighborly of next door neighbors! 😛

I'm moving in on the 21st as well. Hope to see you around Bard then, rager. Does anyone know how we can get cable for our rooms (i.e., what's the local cable company?) I just gotta watch The Daily Show and What Not to Wear to stay sane. 😀

LGA is the closest airport by far, a cab ride will take 15 min in good traffic. JFK is far far away. If you take airtrain + A train, it's like 2 hrs. JFK cab is flat fare of around $40-45 + toll (they raised price recently). LGA is metered and is usually no more than $30 including toll. Newark is OK since u can take airtrain to Penn Station, then take subway or cab from there.

Local cable is Time Warner Cable, but there is cable I think at the Bard Lounge on the top floor.

Let me know when you guys move in, I'm already here.

Just got the invitation to the white coat ceremony in the mail today (very fancy). How many guests are you guys bringing?

Hey guys,
Glad to see this thread being revived for a bit.

I'm bringing 3 guests to the White Coat ceremony (mom, dad and sister).

As for orientation week, last years thread, class of 2007, posted their orientation schedule:
"Monday: 9-5: move in and tours of P&S, 12-1: pizza lunch, 6-9: BBQ on Bard Roof, 10: "Night Out" at Coogan's"

If this year is similar to last year then basically it just looks like Monday we do a lot of eating and unpacking but nothing really important doesn't seem to occur until Tuesday (although, of course eating is important 🙂 )

Good luck getting things ready to move!!

When was the invitation postmaked? Seems like I always get P&S mail a week after it's postmarked. Anyhoo, my mom and dad will be coming to the White Coat Ceremony.

My mom and dad definitely, but I'll feel bad if my S.O. comes all the way down from Vermont for a 30 minute ceremony... does anyone know its duration? (I haven't gotten the invite yet.)
