P&S Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think it's supposed to last for about an hour. The initial info packet said we have a keynote speaker, but I forgot where she's coming from. It may be from the state health dept for something like that.

The invitation was postmarked 14 July 2004. The guest lecturer is Antonia C. Novello, M.D. - New York State Commisioner of Health.

How did you guys manage to get your move in date moved to the 21st. Did you all have to jump through a lot of hoops to do this?

Nope.

I called the housing office and said that I'd like to move in early on the 21st. They said "ok."

Who needs a first-born child anyway?

Alright, lets hear which P&S club(s) people are looking to join come August:
some of my personal choices include, but not limited to
Rugby football
P&S Roadrunners
Ethics Club
Free Weight Club
- so many interesting clubs, so little time

Hey JMac, you'll probably end up playing against my younger brother's rugby team.

Clubs I'm gonna look at and maybe join are:
Almost Definitely:
Free Weight
Society of Bacchus
P&S Rhythm and Blues, Musicians Guild, Coffeehouse Cabaret -> These three are essentially part of the same umbrella music organization.
Ethics Club
Community Health Education
and/or Maybe:
Bard Hall Players
Health Policy Management
Outdoors
Squash
Social Dance

The Players seem way too time-consuming, but I'd be tempted to audition depending on the
show(s) they choose to produce.

I'm definitely doing the roadrunners, outdoor club, and bacchus.

We'll see what else I have time for!

Hmm. . .definitely Bacchus, perhaps the Ultrasounds, and something physical. Anyone wanna be my workout partner? I need someone to keep me in shape.🙂

anything to do with food and wine 🙂

mmmmmm....i'm with you missbonnie! 🙂

plus bard hall players, some sort of exercise something (to help take the edge off the food/wine experience), and i don't even know what else yet.

does anyone know if we can use the computer and gym facilities at columbia prior to orientation? i'm sitting on my butt up here in wash heights wishing i could be at the P&S gym (or at least i tell myself i'd use it if i had access).

hope the post office is good at finding me with all of my forwards. i live pretty close to school, but haven't gotten anything about the white coat ceremony yet...
see you all soon!
n

I didn't get white coat information yet, but I got a big ol' packet with orientation information today. Fun!

I received the orientation packet today too (only 5 more weeks left). Just in case anyone has a mail mishap the deadline for the form (to pick which Broadway play you want to see and to send a check to pay for orientation and the play) is Aug. 6th.

Do you guys know which show your going to or have any recommendations

The Chioces are:
Avenue Q
The boy from OZ
Bombay Dreams
the producers

After watching the Tonys this year, I definitely wanna see Avenue Q. Just looks absolutely hilarious!

I'm going to go to Avenue Q.
The Producers is going to be around forever, and boy from oz will probably have a longer life than avenue q. Hugh Jackman will still be with Boy from Oz at that point and he makes that show worthwhile but you might want to check and make sure he's scheduled to be there the broadway night of orientation.
Bombay Dreams blows goats from what I've heard, so I'd avoid it.

Avenue Q all the way.

Shows are $40, an extra $20 if you want to get dinner beforehand... and the rest of the orientation (includes food, boat cruise, t-shirt, etc) is $25.

There's also a lot of info about signing up for MSSNY, AMA, AMSA, etc...

Has anyone finished the entrance interview for fin aid?

I did. You get a confirmation e-mail after you finish it. I have a quick question. The form for the Broadway shows claims that there is an enclosed envelope that we use to mail the form. My packet doesn't have one of those. Should I just send it to the P&S Club, Attn: Orientation week?

I don't have one either. I called in and they said to send to the P&S Club (like you said above).

Also, I was unclear as to whether we were supposed to put in the $20 for dinner as part of the check. The answer was no, it was just an estimate for later 🙂

This doesn't really pertain to anything on this thread, but check out this song by Coheed & Cambria, its pretty tight.

Hey all--

I was going through all the paperwork I've gotten from Columbia last night, and I came across a Student Health Service packet that I must've gotten back in February (as it's dated January 2004).

It basically involves a lot of health forms we have to have filled out, and proof of vaccinations, etc... the thing that concerns me is that the forms have to be filled out and returned "no later than one month prior to enrollment."

Did anyone else besides me forget all about these forms? Anyone actually fill them out- and was it time consuming/expensive?

Thanks!

Sar

I had to get a physicial back in May, so i just had my physician fill them out. All I had to pay was the insurance copay. 🙂 I sent off the forms, but Health Services didn't seem to get them, and I found out that they placed a hold on my account until they received them. So, I just ended up faxing them and the hold was removed. The only way I found out I had a hold on my account was through SSOL. Did I mention that the hold was put on my account 4 weeks after I initially sent the papers off? Sorry if I sound a little bitter. 😀

I have yet to do this and also have a hold.

Where/how are you logging in to see if you have a hold?

Thanks!

Hey all,

During the Smores and More Wholesome Fun thingy on Thursday, it turns out that the Harlem Jazz Festival has a free concert.
It's called "Jammin' on the Hudson salutes WBGO's 25th Anniversary" and it's being held at Riverbank State Park. (WBGO is a famous jazz radio station based out of Newark) http://www.wbgo.org/

Any of you possibly interested in going to an awesome outdoors jazz concert in the event that Smores & More turns out to be...well...Just Smores?

I don't really want to miss out on part of orientation, but I'm also interested in seeing what the neighborhood has to offer. It seems like for all of orientation we're either sticking to campus or fleeing Harlem like the plague. This might be a good first look at part of the culture of the neighborhood.

Jazz sounds really fun. I dunno about the smores. I despise marshmallows, and I think I'm the only person in the world who hates chocolate. 🙂

Sounds like this could be a really good time, I'm in. What time does it start, though?

hey, for those of you that are moving in early, how about we meet up for drinks Sat night 8/21?

btw, there are 4 of us already here ...

Drinks sound fun. Hmm. . .I could consider that a pre-birthday celebration. 😉

Does anyone know when we will get our phone number for Bard Hall?

My update: I'm considering coming the 19th or the 20th, to catch up with some friends in the city and to beat the moving rush. I'd definitely be down for drinks on the 21st.

I'll be in town beginning the 19th
and move in on the 21st.

I'm also down for drinks. (Sarah, it begins.)

As for the jazz concert, I'll call the festival's program headquarters about the time. It used to be at 7pm but another website says it's at 5.

Hey y'all... just wondering... how unlikely do u think it is that someone would withdraw from P&S sometime between now till the orientation?

Kwanny,

Quick disclaimer: I have no way of knowing if my answer is close to accurate...

My guess is that for a pool of 150 people--the size of Columbia's incoming class--the chances that someone will withdraw or defer at this point due to waitlist movement elsewhere is very small. On another note, I know that some schools have had last-minute deferment requests from student's experiencing an unforeseen crisis just prior to matriculation, but my guess is that that's a fairly uncommon event.

So in answer to your question, I think it's unlikely that someone will withdraw... but I know that at least one school (Yale) which probably greatly overlaps its acceptees and waitlistees with Columbia's is still keeping its waitlist open...so there's still a chance.... one of my buddies from Stanford is keeping a close watch on Yale's waitlist, and so I'm also keeping a close eye and my fingers crossed for him.

What has Dr. Frantz said to you?

Hey, thanks for the response Rager. I really appreciate it.

Most recently, Dr. Frants told me that this year was the record for having the fewest number of acceptees withdrawing from columbia and that chances of taking me or anybody else on the waitlist is nil, but he did tell me that he will keep me "very much in mind" until the very last day possible.

Does anyone know about phone numbers for Bard? Just wondering if anyone has found out yet.

I thought I saw once that you could sign up for phone service through some website, but I'm not sure. We'll probably get that info when we move in.

I don't know about you all, but I've already got a cell phone; why do you all want a landline?

I'm just using my cell, too--

I'm also gonna use my cell phone. Gotta love the family plan!

Unfortunately, I still do not have a cell and am living in the stone age among all the other neanderthals using landlines. By the way, have any of you heard of this new thing called fire, its really "cool". Anyway, just hanging out with my homey Pithecanthropus trying to gather tonights meal.

Can you hear me now? Good.

Maybe I just imagined it, but did you really just use "Pithecanthropus" in a post?

I hereby put forth a motion that a taxonomy moratorium be placed on this thread. Does anyone second that motion?

I hereby put forth a second motion that JMac consider getting a cell phone and enjoy the carnal sins of the post-Promethean Age. Your choice of concubine includes Verizon, Sprint, Ma Bell (she's old and experienced!), and T-Mobile (who was once a man, but is no longer). There are other choices, but they are diseased and best avoided.

touche Rager. I'll second both of your motions! I'm working on the cell, just too lazy to go out and get one I guess.

but damn, now I can't even reach my homeboy because of the moratorium placed on taxonomy! Oh crap, here comes the pterodactyls, flying towards me, trying to eat my flesh! I hope this doesn't violate the moratorium placed on taxonomy! Watch out for those damn dirty apes too!
