Just thought I would have a thread for us future P-Towners. Looking forward to orientation in late August. Have any of you guys done anything for housing yet? I went up to Portland last weekend and checked out the scene...Anyway, I look forward to meeting y'all this fall and enjoy the summer...Peace.

It was a very tough decision, believe me...I still love G'Town, but location played a pretty big part of it. It was hard to do, and I have thought about it at least once an hour since I sent the withdrawal letter. It woulda been cool to chill with you in DC, I am sure you will love it. Best of luck! Looks like I'll need an umbrella...

P-Town sounds like the "J-Lo" verson of Pete Townshend.

Hey chrons... look here for rentals:

www.wweek.com

go to classifieds; rentals; OHSU is in the SW portland region if you didn't know.

I had a friend from Mass and she said P-town was the nick name for a city over there that had a high homosexual population.

It doesn't rain half as much as they would have you believe.

Yes it does! Yes it does!

The city is still awesome, though. I will truly miss it. For chronic and everyone else, I live in NW portland... a little more expensive, but close to downtown, the Pearl district and the buses that go directly to OHSU. Studios and one bedrooms run between $500-$850 depending on the size. Personally, SW Portland is the last place I'd live. I feel like NE, SE, and NW has much more personality and a little cheaper rent.

PS. Don't get an umbrella. No one who has lived here for more than a year uses one (unless you need to head somewhere in a suit or something). I've lived here 8 years and only bought one when I had to go to DC. Use your hood on you jacket. Otherwise you look like you are from out of town. 😀

Which buses go directly to OHSU?

Florida gets more rain than oregon does.

here's a good'n if you have 4 friends:

congratulations, chronic!!! that's awesome you got into ohsu 🙂

I don't know, I use an umbrella sometimes, and I've lived here since I was 15. Then again, I'm from SoCal originally. 😎

And, I gotta stick up for my home: SW (downtown) is a fun place to be, you're close to everything and likely paying significantly less than in NW, which is overpriced for P-town (although if you're accustomed to NY or LA rents, you'll be pleasantly surprised). NE and SE definitely have personality, but only if you're close in to downtown (50th st. or closer), and a lot of the "personality" in NE I can live without, not to mention all the goddamn hippies in SE. SW on the hill though (right by OHSU) is pretty boring, it would be better to live downtown since it's only a 5-10 min. commute from there ot OHSU anyway. The Mercury is a great weekly, you all should pick one up when you get in town just to see what's going on, although their rental listings are pretty meager. Willamette Week would be a much better bet for that purpose.

*word of advice* OHSU students can live in PSU student housing, they own several apartment buildings (all downtown) that are also open to students at other local public colleges and universities (incl. OHSU). I think the prices are kept at 85% of market value, which is still kind of spendy for Portland because of the location but a little bit better than what you'd pay to live in this area otherwise. You can check out what's available at www.chnw.org/pages/future_01.cfm (click on the rental list).
I will combine my word of advice, however, with a *word of caution*: at least in my building, and this seems to be the case in much of PSU housing, there are TONS of frat-boy and jock types, unless that is your scene you may find yourself a little annoyed living with a bunch of beefy, neck-less guys who think it is hilarious to pull the fire alarm at 2 am. But it's all right otherwise. 🙄
