you start your move tomorrow right? have a safe journey!

No, we've got a little more packing to do. We load the truck on Friday evening and I'll pull out of here Saturday around 8am. Hopefully I'll make it through Nevada without another speeding ticket--cop busted me in April for doing 80 in a 70 when I was 50 miles from the nearest exit. It was only me and desert. I'll have to drive the speed limit this time!

Good luck with the move! Hope everything goes smoothly this time around. Let me know if you're gonna drop by the city after settling in and stuff. We gotta get this BBQ planned, right?

And just on a side note, I was talking to Warren the other day about one of our future classmates. Apparently, there's this one oral surgeon from Japan that's been trying to get into the IDS program for a couple years and just never made the cut. So he decided to suck it up, and applied for the DDS program, which he got into. So i guess with him, Dugoni's grandson, and possibly Yarborough's daughter (anyone confirm this?), we'll be shooting for rank #4 in the class?

are dental students really this competitive in dental school?

Honestly though, I really hope our class is more cooperative than competitive; it will make everyone's experiences much more enjoyable. I'm all about sharing pneumonics, notes, test files, etc. 👍

I hope so too! I'd give up a few numbers of class rank to have a more enjoyable, cooperative environment any day.

Considering Jess_SB has a 4.0+ GPA and we'll probably have a hygenist or two, I'd say we're shooting for #7 or #8. I'm all for cooperation, that's one of the things that drew me to Pacific - the whole "Pacific Family" idea. I'm really not competitive, you guys don't need to worry about me. Although I have confidence in myself, I honestly have no idea how I'm going to do, or how tough it will be - esp when it comes to the clinical aspect. I've been spending most of the last year taking classes like 'Tropical Ecology', 'Animal Behavior' and 'Biology of Fishes', we'll see how that translates!

Did you guys check out the Class of 2007 website yet? They at least look like they get along! Click Here

Your GPA is above 4.0! I didn't know that was possible! Congratulations!

Your all for competition - is that how you maintain all A's? And is Pacific a competitive enviornment? I HOPE NOT! I personally believe being around competitive people is a negative 'thing' (they constantly want to do 'better than you' - and don't give 2 seconds to evaluate themselves instead of others).

Having said that - your the one with the "GPA" - so you can do/say/feel/be whatever you want - YOU CAN BACK IT UP!

Oh no, you misread it. I said that I'm all for cooperation not competition - one of the reasons that I've been tutoring fellow undergrads in bio for the last 2 years... By the way the GPA is due to A+s, which don't count at my university but do count for AADSAS.

I don't think that the environment is competitive at UOP, but I guess I'll have to reevaluate that belief once I've been through a few quarters. I'm looking forward to having fun and not being so concerned about grades or rank, but rather becoming a great dentist. I know that's corny, but I'm hoping that that's how most of us feel. I'm already looking forward to the Halloween party, Tahoe trips, bbqs, going out etc.

hahaha   cooperation, not competition

"wanting to have fun and not be so concerned about grades or rank, but rather becoming a great dentist." - doesn't sound corny at all (Ok, maybe it does - a little, -just kiddin'  No, but seriously - that's the corniest thing I've heard! I HOPE YOU KNOW I'M JOKING!

Halloween Party? Tahoe trips? bbqs? Going out? - I would do ANYTHING to be able to live that kind of life and be in your shoes! I WANT IT SOOO BAD!!!

Congrats again!

Yo guys! I'm getting super excited over here! I received the booklet from the class of 2007! It was definately fun reading through it. Jess, haha yeah i'm with you...bummer with the hosiery! On a serious note...I was looking at the class schedule and I was under the impression (from past schedules) that we would be taking histo first quarter, but it looks like we won't be. Anyone know when we'll be taking it? I'm so excited! The next three years of our lives are going to be filled with learning, growth, laughter, fun, lots of coffee (haha), and tons of experience. All in the great city of San Francisco...how could you go wrong?!!

I don't know how reliable the information is. I havn't talked to the course director or anything, but people are telling me that they're going to combine anatomy and histo together. So as we learn different sections of the body for gross, we also learn the relavent histo. Makes more sense I guess. I know some schools like UCSF have gone to a completely integrated curriculum like this.

I got a call from the oral surgeon's office who had accepted a jar from me to collect teeth. After 4 days, they put 150 teeth in the jar! I was dumbfounded. I hope that's enough, haha. I went by to pick up the other jars, all from general dentists, and not one of the other jars had any teeth. I'm glad that OMS helped me out.

Just a quick tip for people still looking for housing:
If you didn't get into the Presidio student housing, you can still rent a cheap place there through the Properties office. You can get a 2 bedroom for 1650/month. The 1650/month includes utilities, water, garbage, etc. Plus you get a parking space (if you live right in the city, a spot costs 100-200/month, unless you get lucky). Me and my wife have been living at the Baker beach apartments in the Presidio for 2 weeks now and love it. We're surrounded by trees and can see the golden gate bridge, and we falll asleep to the sounds of the ocean at night. You should look into it if you want to be out of the city in a beautiful area for school. Just go to http:\\presidio.gov if you're interested.

Wow, this thread slipped all the way to page 4. Must have been a lot of activity in the predent forum this week.

Anyhow, we made it to SF. I drove most of the night on Friday. I stopped to sleep for an hour at rest stop just outside of Elko. I drove for another hour, but I couldn't keep the eyelids open, so I pulled over to sleep for another hour. By that time, it was dawn, and I drove the rest of the way into town.

It's good to be here. The weather has been nice. Now, I just have to get everything unpacked. Good luck to all of you who are moving to town soon!

Glad to hear you made it to SF okay. It'll be my turn this weekend moving up to SF. I'm having such a headache trying to pack all my stuff right now.

I hate packing and unpacking. The whole trip I wished I was wealthy enough to have hired a moving service. About half way through Nevada, I contemplated turning back. I wasn't sure if it was worth it. Nevada at night has to be the most mind numbing drive in existence. It's akin to driving through outer space minus the amazing view of the earth. In fact when I woke up at dawn, my brother who was driving with me thought we had landed on Mars. It was a barren wasteland. Good luck with the move Tamago.

Was that your first trip across NV on I-80? I have never liked it either. As a kid I really thought the only purpose NV served was to make me glad I finally reached my destination, either California or Utah. Its a drive you'll probably have to make at least a dozen times in the next 3 years. Don't worry though, with a little practice you can get it down to about 9 hours (figure out where the speed traps are, etc.) 🙂

Hey jugga, are you moving up from san diego? If so, Im moving up from Riverside/Orange County, maybe we can drive up together, let me know.

Hey all. Has anyone received roommate assignments or move-in date info for housing yet? I suppose I'm probably jumping the gun; the deadline to have the lease back was only a week ago, but it'd be nice to know. Who here is living in housing besides myself? Javadi-thanks for the tip about plentiful teeth at the oral surgeon's office. I need to get to collecting. So, we've got a month of vacation left and I feel like I should be more scared about school starting than I am. I'm feeling a little too laid back right now. I'm sure I'll get my socks knocked off relatively quickly, though.

I got some interesting stats via an email the dean sent out to the school:

· The University of the Pacific continues to be the top feeder school for the School of Dentistry. 31 offers were made to the University of the Pacific students. This compares to the next highest offers which were made to 13 students from Brigham Young University, and 13 from Arizona State University.

· The Class of 2008 was selected from 2,581 candidates. This is a 15.4 percent increase over last year. We will probably be accepting 138 students into the DDS Class of 2008.

· The academic average for the Class of 2008 will be in the 94th percentile; perceptual ability in the 91st percentile; biology at the 94th percentile; total science at the 95th percentile.

Hey guys,

I received the computer forms today in the mail, which includes a survey to place us into the different computer orientations. I'm expecting to see all of you guys in the advanced computer session - I can't believe its a little over a month away!

Cyrus - I'm glad to hear that you're all moved in up in Marin. I will be driving up on the 13th, I can hardly wait to pack up all of this stuff that I've accumulated over the last three years and haul it up to the Bay :scared: But, I'm so excited to get started, and begin this new chapter.

Not much else going on, just trying to get through finals... see you all soon!

Jess, the good weather is waiting for you. When I left Utah, we were having 95+ degree days. Out here, it's been an amazing 75 degrees.

Does anybody know what happened to Laura Buell? I was looking up the phone number for the admissions office so I could update my address with them. I noticed that she isn't listed in the directory anymore. Did she quit? Fired? Just curious. She and Warren were the ones who took us through our interview day.

Laura is leaving UOP, moving back down to San Diego. I think she got engaged and her fiance is down south or something like that. I can verify with the rumor mill if you're really interested. So if you go to the UOP employment page, you'll notice her position is posted.

Warren has also stopped working for DDS admissions and has been working for IDS since about mid-January. Janelle was promoted to his position, so for the time being, she and Kathy are your goto people for admissions questions.

Hey guys, im not sure if this question was already asked but I was reading through the 1st year guidebook that was sent out a couple weeks ago and under "helpful hints to get you settled in..." it says to: Change your cell phone number before you get to school. Anyone know why they think that is a good idea? Doesn't really make sense to me... It goes on to say something about verison and cingular service but a change of number still doesn't seem necessary... Thanks

When I read this I just assumed that they meant to change your number to a 415 area code, but you can keep the same 7 digits if you want.

I don't think it works that way unless the vendor you are purchasing your new contract through just happens to have your 7 digit number in their number bank. More than likely, the number will either already be taken or does not have a cell phone designated prefix for the 415 area code. My friend had a Sac area code and when she switched carriers, she tried to get the same number but with a 415 area code and wasn't able to. She ended up having to get a whole new number.

I agree it's unlikely you'd be able to get the same number in a new area code, and I also don't see much point in changing to the new area code. Cell phones are all free long distance anyway, who cares what the area code is... For me, I think it'll be easier to just keep the same number.

oh, I don't know much about cell phones, but when I moved down to Santa Barbara from Marin I kept my number and just changed the area code. I agree it doesn't matter much except when other people are calling you from a landline - then it's long distance for them ... but everyone uses cell phones now anyways, right?

Oh, well maybe it is more possible than I thought. I guess having never done it, I really have no idea. It might be a little better to have a 415 number, I just don't feel like changing my number for the 3rd time in 3 years. Besides, are we really going to have enough spare time to use the phone anyway?

On a different subject, I noticed in the "top ten list of helpful hints..." (blue sheet, #5) it says, "expect additional expensive items, which are not part of your kit, but will be helpful in the future." Anyone know what these are? And are they included in our financial aid budget? I keep forgetting to call and ask.

I think the additional expensive items are for things like Loops

Woohoo, I finally made it to SF!! It's good to be here. It sure is windy and cold in the city. Speaking of which, it's actually drizzling right now! Anyhow, I gotta go back to unpack rest of the stuff. Good luck to everyone that are moving soon.

Hello!

I'm packing up down here in Santa Barbara! I have one more final tomorrow, graduation on Sat. and then I will be driving up to SF (Marin) on Monday!

I don't have a place yet either, but I know I will be living with my boyfriend. I plan on checking out some apartments next week; luckily I can stay at my parents house as long as I want. I'll start posting any interesting places I find (that don't work for me of course) on the yahoo groups if I have some free time.

As anybody looked into gyms near Pacific yet? We were mentioning earlier trying to get a group rate... I guess I'll start looking into that too. Tentatively, I think I'm going to try to go before class on the days when we start at 9. It will definitely be hard to sqeeze those kinds of things in with our schedule, but a necessity for me (I think I would go insane).

How much of a bummer is it that we still don't own our computer after paying $900 x 4 for it. AND, after just glancing at the Health Plan - the deductable is $1500! That's pretty high, mine was only $150 in my last plan and I only was responsible for 10% (instead of 20%). No surgeries for me in the next four years. oh well.

Back to packing....

I was looking at the insurance info that came in the mail the other day as well. It's a little confusing, but it sounds like the deductible only applies to when you see a doctor outside the preferred network or if you have unpreauthorized procedures. They're supposed to have a insurance rep come out and talk to use during orientation, I thought I would just ask all my questions then since there's not really much we can do about it.

Doesn't look like the best coverage, but better than the alternative...

Yeah we are getting robbed for the laptop. Oh well, what can we do? I found this gym by Pacific, its like 0.5 miles from school supposedly. I dont know about the membership rates yet, but we can check that out soon enough. Im actually going up on Tuesday just to check things out, but Im not moving up til the end of June. Anybody wanna meet up on Tuesday? Let me know. http://www.phhcsf.com/index.htm

hey, anyone know about street parking permits around the area of our school and the pacific apartments? When I was living in Berkeley it was about 30bucks for the whole year to have street parking... I know it's hell to find spots but I was thinking if you dont use your car too much then it'd be worth it as long as it's relatively safe. I'm really not up for paying 100 a month or whatever it is for lot parking... thanks for any input!

Check out this link: Parking

Looks like it's $27 per year. Pretty good deal - I'm getting one if my apartment doesn't have parking.

I've driven to school bunch of times. Parking during the day is not too hard to find if you don't mind walking 3-4 blocks. I heard night time is much harder to find a spot though because you have to compete with all the other residents who went to work during the day. I would definitely get a good alarm if you don't already have one, the area around housing can be sketchy.

hey guys,
I called that pacific heights health club. They are $125 to start up, and then $79 a month (not a misprint), a little to rich for my blood. I also checked out 24 hour (b/c I already have a membership), they have a place called fitlight and it's 1 block from the school. The downfall is its only 1500 square feet, that could be a tight squeeze during busy times. There is another 24 on van ness and post which is 0.9 miles. I think I may just end up sticking with 24. Clubs nearing $100 a month, :scared:

i was out apartment shopping in the area last weekend and saw a bunch of really great apartments. in particular, there are a few studios on washington street that are literally a block from school. washington is a nice, quiet street w/o a lot of traffic (from what i saw on sunday). in case anyone's interested, here's some pics:

http://www.craigslist.org/sfc/apa/77700799.html

the one shown on craigslist is for singles only. (my bf and i tried to get it but were rejected on that basis.)

there are two other studios available in the two buildings on either side of the place listed on craigslist. (i don't know if couples are ok). these buildings, from the outside, look identical to the place listed on craigslist, so i'm guessing they probably have the same set up. i thought these studios were great for their location, size, relative quality, and price. (we saw some really small (less than 300 sq ft) and run down places go for $995.) the two studios i just mentioned weren't listed on craigslist, but there are signs outside the building w/ their phone numbers on it.

we ended up finding a studio at pacific and webster. yay!

good luck to jess and everyone else who is apartment hunting!!

hey guys,
I called that pacific heights health club.

The FitLite just opened a couple months ago. It's pretty crap. It's one of those circuit things you see at the regular clubs where you do one set on each station and then rotate. No free weights, just a bunch of machines and one or two cycles. It's ok if all you have is 20min and need to squeeze in something, but they don't even give you enough time to break a sweat.

I haven't been to the 24 on Van Ness yet, but its not too far away. One bus will get you there and back no problem, or you can just run it to warm up. 😛 I'll probably just stick with 24 since my renewal is $100/yr. Not the greatest club, but can't beat that price.
