does anyone know much about this field? Was speaking to some residents in radiology today and they said some cool stuff was happening here. whats the caseload, lifestyle and income like?

This is not a real distinct/separate field. It's just done by interventional radiologists who work in a children's hospital. I would guess that there are less than 20-30 people in the entire country who do pediatric interventional radiology full time. Most would say that while there a couple of very interesting procedures that are done in pediatric IR, the bulk of the work (read >90%) is putting in feeding tubes and venous access. There are a few very interesting procedures in treating of vascular malformations and congenital anomalies. But overall, the bulk of what we do in our peds IR rotation is pretty boring.
