Hi all,

So one of the eq we need to in renal physio is

Renal blood flow = Renal plasma flow / (1-Hct)

And we can get renal plasma flow using PAH clearance (at low plasma conc.).

I thought this made sense, but then I realized why does it have to be plasma flow not blood flow?

Since 100% of PAH entering kidney is excreted, shouldn't the clearance of PAH equal to renal blood flow instead of renal plasma flow? (Why plasma which is just a yellow liquid when it is actually the blood that is being filtered via the kidney?)

Many thanks in advance.

The plasma contains all the goods that will be filtered and/or secreted, while the RBCs should just keep on moving on. If they get through, we have problems.
