Hey guys! I’m hoping y’all can help me out. I’m an outreach coordinator for a club in school and we’re trying to organize a meeting under the topic of One Health where we partner up with the med school and do... something? ‍♀️ The idea is to have a lunch meeting and talk about the overlap or vet med and human med, get a glimpse in the life, etc. Has anyone been part of a club that did anything like this? I’m really struggling to come up with ideas that would be interesting for both vet students and med students

We don't have our med school on the same campus as us, but one thing that the school does with vet students and med students is they team up together on the other side of the state in Seattle like one weekend a year and provide medical screenings for homeless and vet students help their animals. I know that's a huge project from what you're looking for but just to give you some ideas. I think the lecture is a great start as many don't realize how much overlaps between us on both sides of the coin. ie TB and the implications vet to human/human to vet. Also many veterinarians get frustrated with human health care professionals because sometimes we will go to them and be like I have "X" and they don't want to believe us because most people don't get "x". I'm not saying it's the majority by any means of Drs who do that, but I've heard my share of stories. Mostly I think just how to get more collaboration between the 2 professions is a great round table like discussion especially on the student level. Hope this gave you some ideas!

PM me, I was co founder and coordinator for a national one health student symposium. We got all vet schools, med schools and even most pharm and nursing schools to participate. It hasn’t been done before in my country but a bunch of us did it.

Ooh, rabies compendium and how to handle dog/cat bites in people might be a good topic to have that would be excellent for both groups. Human healthcare providers esp in the ED often **** it up big time with both of these.

Yes to this. An employee in the practice got bit on the hand (significant bite) by a cat recently and went to an urgent care - no cleaning, no flushing, 5 day antibiotic course prescribed. And they didn't ask about rabies status of the animal. :bored:

When I was in first year they passed a bill allowing physician-assisted suicide. The med school and vet school partnered to sponsor a panel discussion with MDs and DVMs to discuss MAID and euthanasia. Students from both schools were invited, and they opened the floor to questions after the initial discussion. It was a fascinating evening!

Oooh thats awesome, thank you guys so much! I’ve hit such a wall with organizing things like this

When I was in vet school we attempted to organize a fun walk event while talking about the rise of obesity in both humans and animals and the health implications for obesity in pets (ie its not cute its detrimental to their health). Wasn't a super well organized event but the idea was sound.

MD/DO students often get a somewhat shafted on proper understanding of zoonotic disease. That might be an interesting topic.

This. Someone gets crypto from our dairy calves every fall. They inevitably struggle to get the campus health service to consider that they have a zoonotic disease and what to do for treatment. Someone was told they had mono for a week.
