If anyone has a Palm Tungsten E PDA, I would appreciate if you could tell me what you like about it, and what you don't. Would you recommend it to others? I am looking into buying this PDA as it seems to have a reasonable price and I'm not really looking for a fancy one. I just want to use it for my medical texts on it, not for music or pics. Will 32 MB of memory be sufficient or will I need to add more?
I've heard people say that this one is better than Sony PEG-TJ27. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

You should try posting this question in the Technology Forum.... you might get more responses there... But then again, maybe I'm the only technology-impaired person here who doesn't know what you're talking about

The Tungsten E is a good PDA at a good price. I would take it over the TJ27 if for no other reason than that Sony is discontinuing its Clie line in the US. It is basically the same PDA as the Zire 31, except that it has a high-resolution screen.

You may find the battery life to be somewhat lacking - I've heard people say anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. That'll probably be enough for medical purposes.

It does not have built-in wireless capability. You'll have to go to the T|C or the T|T2/T3 for that.

Finally, I would suggest an extra 32/64/128 MB card to go with it, in case you do need it to store applications. You probably won't, but the SD cards are pretty cheap when they're that small.

I have one and love it.

Before I bought it, I looked at all the reviews.

It got rave reviews for practically everything.

The following, however, are the down sides that are common:
1) The ~4hour life for battery. I use my palm quite often, and can go weeks without a charge. It can definitely last through a day of major use. Charging it and syncing it each night solves this problem.

2) It is sensitive to heat and shock damage. Make sure to take good care of this little baby. Treat it as if it were one of your 'own'. Don't leave it in the car, and buy the nifty little aluminum accessory case to keep it from being banged around and scratched.

I've had mine for a couple of years now. And it is still going strong, by using these guidelines. 👍 :luck: 👍

I prefer pocket PC!!! Use to have a palm, but love my HP so much more 🙂

Tx, I got an HP this year (and love it, too! 😀 ). Did you get any extra software for it? What worked well, what wasn't worth it?

the Tungsten E accepts SD cards, so memory wouldn't really be a problem... unless you plan to install programs into it (i know there are a few programs for pharmacology, pdr, etc.), in which case 32 mb might feel cramp -- remember that you share the RAM with stuff you install and programs that you are currently running.

have you considered a pocket pc? for me, a ppc gives you the bigger screen (Tungsten E has that Graffiti pad permanent on it, whereas ppc uses a "virtual pad" that can be minimized) and better input options (i find Graffiti confusing, whereas ppc has 4 options for input text: palm-style Graffiti, virtual qwerty keyboard, writing whole sentences on the screen and let the device transcribe into text, or the writing pad that allows input one letter/number at a time). just based on these two aspects, i would pick a ppc over palm anyday.

I use it throughout the day with no problem, but I do need to charge it every few days.

The one thing I don't like is that the screen makes a high-pitched noise that's a little annoying. Anyone else notice that?

I noticed the same thing, that noise is annoying! I thought it was because I dropped my palm. I guess that's just how they make them.

Thank you for all your replies. I'm sorry I posted this in the wrong forum. I'm not sure how to move it to the Tech forum. If anyone does, please let me know. I have a couple of more ques for those who own this PDA.
Did the PDA come with a charger, case, etc. or do you have to buy all that separate? What about the programs and medical texts, where can I get those from?
I don't think the battery life will be much of a problem for me. I will charge it every couple of days.
Iwy Em Hotep, I did not know that sony is discontinuing the Clies in the US. Where did you hear that?
Thanks!

Hi

I actually use both platforms. I use a Dell Axim X30 with Wi-Fi and BT and a Tungsten E. I really like them both, but as far as a definite choice I think the Palm is still a bit faster and the interface itself is easier to use. But I still use the Pocket PC as my default PDA because of the Wi-Fi, larger screen and a better PIM (Pocket Informant). When you compare the syncing software the Tungsten wins easily, my Pocket PC takes a while to sync, while the Tungsten completes everything in maybe 15 seconds.
