Hi all,

As many of you know, there's a pandemic going on that is affecting a lot of things. For me, I was in the middle of finishing up my shadowing hours so I could apply this summer. I no longer am able to shadow due to restrictions; is anybody else in this same situation? I have everything completed except for this!

Given the fact that most dental offices have been ordered to cease all but emergency operations and to consolidate/conserve PPE resources in anticipation of any worsening of the pandemic (see Italy), I am certain you are not alone. Hopefully the networking you have made with current students and admissions staff will help support you.

Okay... I appreciate clarifying. I think there was an order in Ohio, but other state dental associations have issued at least recommendations.

I'm in the same boat. I'm a junior bio pre-dental student from GA taking a biology internship at an orthodontics office. They are now closed until April because of everything going on. They are going to give me access to a website called Trapezio where I can get some sort of learning experience and possibly a certification... Maybe this is something you can look into? It's not shadowing hours, but it is a learning opportunity that could be put on your application. Definitely worth talking to a local dentist/orthodontist about.

Dental offices can't do elective procedures. Lots are closing. Can't see this hurting your admissions one bit

Same boat here - I'm a senior who switched to pre-dental literally last summer and only had time to finish 30-ish shadowing hours last summer. Does anyone know if shadowing during a gap year (if that would even be possible) would provide any value for apps?

There is a section for future plans, and I would suggest doing it even for your own edification, it can give you a lot of insight into what to expect when you finish school, which is a good motivator when classes get tough

Has there been any talk about moving the open date for applications to the right due to the virus for prospective students?
