Hey guys,
this site has been great and the people here are really helpful
however, i had a couple of questions for you guys because i guess i panicked a lil bit when i read some posts on this forum on cc. my situation is that i have gone to a community college for the first two years of my undergrad and i plan on transferring next year and majoring in psych at a university. i took most of my pre reqs at the cc and have like 3.6 GPA coming out of cc. i read some posts about taking classes at cc and it seems like the opinions are mixed about community colleges. most people say that it is important to have 4.0 GPA if you go to cc and such. i wanted to know that with my 3.6 GPA from cc, will i be ok so long that i acheieve a 3.3 to 3.4 GPA at the university i am transferring to for the final two years of my undergrad? and will me going to a cc for the first two years of my undergrad hurt my chances of getting into dental school? sorry about the long, thanks in advance for all the help.

I'm in the same boat as you, I'll transfer next year to a university (VCU). Hopefully our two years at the CC would not hurt us. I have similar concerns as you, expecially when others mention the importance of getting a 4.0 GPA at the cc. That is easier said than done, one of my Calculus professors also teaches at a university. He basically uses the same syllabus at the CC and the University, and pretty much does everything at the same level.
Anyone with opinion on this subject please post them. 😕

about community colleges...

I think that everyone's situation in the application process will vary, but I just wanted to say that i know of 2 guys who went to a cc, transfered to a well known 4 years univ. to complete their Bachelor of science degree, and both got into a dental school in California. I am not sure of their GPA, nor their DAT scores, but it's not the end of the world, there are so many folks that transfer from a cc to a 4 yr univ. and then continue on their academic track in the health field.

Regards,

I don't think you have to worry. I am in the same situation too. I have already transfered to university and it is going good. As long as you keep a pretty decent GPA, there should not be any problem. After all, there are so many transfers who apply to dental school and get in to good ones too.
Keep up the good work.

Mo Thuggy,

It is true that grades are important in getting into dental school, however, it is not only about grades. You involve yourself in extracuricular activities that are related to the field of dentistry. Research, and volunteer work along with other activities will drastically improve your chances of getting in. Get some dental experience, volunteer at a clinic (free dental clinics are always accepting dental volunteers). Finally, DAT's are very important, prepare for you DAT's, be sure that you can get to the 20's. Remember that it is not only about grades. Best of luck to you!
