Panicking Pre-med

Gaaah! Alright so I was 99.9999% sure I was definitely going to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater Oklahoma until today. I have a lovely full scholarship for tuition and board and the campus is equally lovely however.... I had my mind completely set on getting my EMT-B certification this summer and working part-time as a ED tech or something of the sort during undergrad at OSU, but Stillwater is SMALL and the hospital (there is only one and it is quite small, like the city itself) isn't employing EMT-B's for anything, and I'm not sure they ever do. The fire dept. provides EMS for the city and they only hire paramedics/firefighters. I'm really intrigued by EMT/ED work so I thought, "Hey, why not make some extra cash and get some clinical experience at the same time by working part time with an EMT-B cert". But now I'm rather upset seeing as I may not be not be able to do that... What should I do? Any ideas? Is it possible to find EMT-B/ED related employment on a seasonal (summer) only basis? Thanks

You'll have to check to see, call around and ask
My advice though, don't pass up the full ride. If possible volunteer with the EMT service. And as an EMT you could usually work weekends, its usually 3 days a week or so. At least when my friend did it it was. He would work Wed, Thurs and Sun all like 15 hour shifts, some long. Lots of 24 hours too.

Wait...I'm confused...are you asking us whether you should attend another college so you can potentially become an EMT in the ED?

I think you are going to have a hard time finding a ED that is willing to hire a no experience, part timer. ER tech positions tend to be difficult to land.

I'm aware its rather typical for the aspiring pre-medder but its something i'm very interested in. But anyways, what else is there to do?
i need some ideas i spose

You may find a volunteer opportunity on campus. Give yourself some time and ask around. Some schools have peer health educators, some schools have EMT-Bs who attend athletic events and provide first aid and assistance to fans.

You could get your EMT cert and see if you can't join a volunteer EMS program in your hometown. You could run during breaks (especially winter and summer), and many EMS systems have something like a "college" program that allow you do to this (instead of having to meet the required number of duties each month). This is what I did, and I have enjoyed every minute of my ambulance experience. If this is what you want to do - go for it! But I wouldn't pass up a full scholarship just because there are no opportunities for EMT-Bs in Stillwater (and that might not be true as LizzyM said - talk to current students there and ask around!). I agree...a full scholarship is an amazing opprotunity. I guess you should weigh what is more important to you....emt experience, which....how long would you plan on doing that...vs....free school...where most people will be paying for their school after they graduate..you would have no worries there

As others have said, I'd for sure go with the full scholarship. For me, that just isn't an opportunity you pass up unless there are extreme circumstances.

I'd go with the full ride..

I've shadowed EMT's and Paramedics, EMT jobs are increasingly difficult to get, there are many out there whom are getting their license..

Also EMT's work very long shifts typically 15-18 hours (however they only work 2-3 days a week). It will be almost impossible to work these hours while in college, ecspecially if your going pre-med.. Also your going to want some free time on weekends I would imagine..

Oklahoma St. is a very nice school, my two cents is to take the scholarships and find other ways to get involved on campus (shadowing, tech jobs, etc..)

Ahh thanks, yeah I think I'll get the certification just because I really want to learn the stuff and then hope I can find a way to use it either in Stillwater or back home on breaks : ) thank you guys as always for the insight. Sorry for posting it in the wrong forum, I'm actually not in high school so I thought the pre-Allopathic was the right forum, but now I see the description also says "pre-college". Im not sure if I understand your post. But if it is a choice between a free ride in college or being an EMT in a more populated area, youd have to be an idiot not to take the free ride.

There really is no choice, get your priorities straight, school-->then extracurics
