All of us knew going into the test that it was wrong to do it. We had called the ADA and asked about the definition of "measuring devices". Some of the guys didn't think it was a big deal going in, but afterward, when they did so well... (

You said it yourself, I didnt make up anything. They came to you beforehand to tell you their strategy, and confirmed that they ALL had called ADA, verified it was cheating and then said its no biggie. You then didnt say anything to them as to what you would do, miss "strong advocate of morals", and instead waited for them to take the test to tell on them so that you could have a better shot at D school. That's all I have to say about this topic but I just have to tell you one thing: One day, this type of thing is gonna bite you in the ass. Big time.

Apparently your friends think you're just the greatest thing since jesus for turning them in and destroying their months (years??) of hard work to get into dental school. Unless their all planning to smile in your face for a couple months while they figure out some sort of revenge, I'm sorry if I don't believe you.

Wow, long thread. After reading each post, I noticed some inconsistencies and here is what my impression is with what happend (THESE ARE NOT FACTS). Please correct them as fit so we all can see the big picture.

Scenario 1:
HOTTY's friends: Let's cheat on the DAT by using our fingers.

HOTTY: That is cheating and it is wrong.

HOTTY's friends: Let's do it anyways.

(after cheating on the DATs

HOTTY: Sorry guys, I had to report you and you can't be dentists anymore.

HOTTY's friends: Awww, thank you for making us see how wrong it was.
We'll tell you what our punishment is because you are so nice to turn us in.

HOTTY: That's the least I can do since you guys may take my spot for dental school.

I bet you can save at least 10-15 spots from each school if you ask ADA to review all the tapes of each prometric location. I bet there are a lot more suckers out there who didn't know and they should be punished as well.

actually suspensions mentioned. In one of the posts she mentioned some won't be able to take the DAT again till next summer while others will have to wait for 2 years.

What's a lurker? Is that the same thing as a new person? One of my friends who is a member here told me about this topic (which I didn't believe). So I had to see for myself. And I did read the thread and that is honestly my impression. Please correct me since I am way off. Sounds like you need to read the thread too since the DAT's were not "just invalidated".

Wow, I am just a little shocked that you all are so pissed off, that's all.

What difference does it make if I believe? I think I have heard of not being able to touch the monitor or hold up a pencil or whatever. But honestly, I took the DAT already, and yes I expect dental school to be like the business world.

Wow! I went to work and came back to all of this....Here is the story as Hotty explained it earlier before this thread blew up and rumors flew.

anyway, the cheating wasn't that they used fingers. They allegedly traced the angles by putting a piece of paper up to the screen. Hotty turned them in a while ago, but apparently the ruling came down today after the test centers turned in video tapes to the ADA. The schools were allegedly notified of the cheating and the predents are not allowed to take the DAT for at least a year. Meanwhile, the cheaters thank Hotty for saving them from a life of guilt.

And yes I called, and then one of my buddies didn't believe, so he called. All of us were there.

I hate to break it to you, but what you did doesnt neccessarily show integrity, although it is a sweet reason to justify why you did it...since no one can really argue against integrity right? it does however show a complete lack of human compassion. Now, im sure with your vast understanding of professional conduct, you would agree that we, as future professionals, should have both integrity as well as compassion...whereas integrity keeps us honest...compassion keeps us human. Or maybe its late and im totally off..i dunno...i just finished watching the departed, awesome movie! go watch fellow SDNers 😉

Integrity and compassion are both important things that we as professionals must have. With integrity comes honesty. I know a lot of people are ripping HOTTY for turning them in, but these are people who we are competing with for dental school spots. There are probably others who haven't been turned in as well. It's just a shame. And maybe the rules didn't explicitly say, but it seems common sense to me that had they wanted us to trace angles and write all over the test, the DAT would not be administered electronically. Also, if honesty comes along with integrity then why couldn't the individuals who cheated turn themselves in. That seems like the more professional thing to do. And maybe they "didn't know the rules" but even so, that's a small number who "didn't know" compared to many of us who apparently did. And as far as compassion goes, the individuals who cheated did not show compassion for anyone else who is applying right now. It seems to me that the compassionate thing done in this situation is HOTTY turning them in on our behalf... all of the applicants who have worked so hard and didn't cheat. How do you know that these individuals won't take shortcuts in dental school? How do you know that maybe a reason you're getting the dreaded "HOLD" letter or "rejection" letter isn't because someone who cheated on the DAT has an interview and you don't? Seems unlikely in my opinion, but after hearing situations like this, it makes you wonder.

I broke down and called the ADA to see what they thought about using your hands and pencils and paper and what not on the DAT. The lady I spoke with said a "Measuring Device" is anything that you hold up to the screen to compare one object with another. I asked her what if a ton of people have taken the DAT and traced angles and used their fingernails etc. She said they would be considered cheaters and that each test taker has a responsibility of knowing the rules going in.

That would suck ace if I had my results invalidated because I didn't read the test regulations well enough beforehand.

After talking to her, I am starting to think something like this could have happened.

Yes, I think the whole situation sounds more harsh on here than it really was. They are still my good friends, one of the guys told me he wanted to tell on himself but didn't have the courage. He said he would have felt like he was living a lie at D school. He is glad that I prompted the invesitgation.

Believe it or not, some people aren't good at supressing the guilt that come with untruthful actions. He won't be heading to d school this year, but he feels like a huge monkey came off of his back.

I would want my friend to prompt the same thing also, if couldn't do it myself.

🙄 This scenario is as ******ed as it gets. If the cheating friend still sees you as a good friend, he's either going to heaven or is so ******ed that maybe barring him from D-school is a good thing.

I am very confused over this conversation. When I took the Kaplan prep class I can remember discussing things such as using your paper to measure or your hands to decide. What if your hands didn't actually touch the screen, is it still cheating. It doesn't matter to me, I was bad at PAT anyway, just interested.

I agree with you on that point, but I do not agree with Hotty's action. Here's how I see it...she could have made the cheaters (who are supposedly guilty) do community service or something...but this is dental school application! making them go through this whole sh*tty process again is just plain cruel. Besides, if they had 25's, they would have probably scored a 20+ without the cheating...and this would still be pretty strong scores. Now if they were complete *******es that never in a million years could score higher than 20...then I would turn them in for unrealistically stealing someone else' spot.
