Hi!

I'm a third year dental medicine student from Puerto Rico.

I would like to know what to expect about the Oral and Maxillofacial externship program at Parkland.
I'm really interest in this experience and in the possibility of joining the internship program.

Thanks in advance.

It was a great Externship! I externed there last August. Monday’s are pre-op/post-op days and you go get your badge so don’t expect a whole lot to be going on. The rest of the week the OR schedule is full. Saw lots of trauma cases, benign path, TMJ. You have the opportunity to see patients in the outpatient clinic and work them up or pull teeth. You can also go to the children’s hospital (CMC) or JPS in Fort Worth but need to specifically ask for the paperwork to do so. You see a lot at JPS too I’ve heard (especially malignant path and reconstruction). You’ll have the opportunity to take call overnight also. Overall, the residents make you feel welcome and you’ll get to socialize if you’re not on call, especially if you’re there for 2 weeks. Try to spend time and chat with Dr. Schlieve the program director if you’re interested in the internship. He’s really approachable and loves to teach.

@avangusva is a resident there and might be able to touch on anything I missed. Good luck!

Thank you so much!

Maybe an odd question to ask and I don't mean to offend, but does anyone know how Parkland is these days?
