I feel like I am going through a mid college crisis and am hoping I will find some guidance through here. I currently am a Junior in college pre-med. However, the last year I have spent thinking about changing my major. I feel as though being a DO suits me perfectly. However, looking at my future... I feel as though I wont be able to dedicate much time to a family (especially being a female). I'm still really young (18) and really far ahead in college. So all though a family is far off for me I was wondering are there alot of DOs who work part time? Or are able to have a good family balance (not working on call). Thank you I really dont want to change my major as soon as I started looking into this field I realized it is my perfect job in a nutshell.

Moving to pre-osteo since this is a pre-med question.

1) There is no difference in practice between DOs and MDs as far as specialties and hours.
2) Part-time in medicine is often 30-ish hours/week from what I've seen from part-time physicians in office-based practices.
3) There are plenty of parents who are physicians and spend time with their families. Maybe you should talk with some mom-physicians.
4) I definitely know young female physicians who wish to be stay at home moms but cannot afford to due to medical school debt.
5) I'm an emergency physician. We have a part time doc in our group who works about 5 12 hour shifts a month and is a stay-at-home mom the rest of the time. Her husband is also a physician in our group, so it makes it more financially feasible for them.

A good friend of mine is going to take a 7-12hr shift rotation as a general hospitalist, 7days on 7off, which while she wouldn't be able to attend everything, she has e/o week to spend with kids 100%.... Not to mention, there are lots of moms who work regular full time jobs, not because they have to, but because they want to! Several of my coworkers have chosen to come back to work because of not liking 'staying home' sooo... I would say if your heart is in medicine do it, worry about the rest later!

Goto mommd.com they talk about this subject at length on many different threads. It is very do able. And even tho you are young, it is great to realize there will be a time to balance everything. For now, enjoy your time! Do everything you can! Experience life and living. Travel. Study. And meet all sorts of people. It will make you a better person and a happier mother. Good luck!

Thanks for the website it was a big help and for the great advice it is very reassuring 🙂

Another website I enjoy reading

http://www.mothersinmedicine.com/

it's a blog with postings on a variety of topics from moms in all phases of medical training, in a variety of specialities. some are full time, some are part time. with all of those different perspectives I think you can get some ideas on what it's like and a lot of it seems to depend on personal qualities and how you achieve balance.
