Hey all,

So I am in a part-time formal post-bac program (2 pre-reqs a semester + labs). I am concerned that the 2 pre-reqs a semester will look weak to adcoms so I've been supplementing my time with the following:

Shadowing:6-8 hrs/week
Hospital volunteer: 4 hrs/week
Non-medical volunteer activities: 3 hrs week
work: 20 hrs week
clinical research: 12 hrs week
total: approx 40-45 hours a week outside of classroom/studying.

Additionally, I have previous health related volunteer and shadowing activities totaling approx 200 and 50 hours, respectively, that i completed before post-bac began. Is this enough to prove to adcoms that I can handle courseload, or do you think adjustments need to be made? Thanks.

The first semester of medical school is approx 32 credit hours. I guess it's going to come down to how much you are handling now and can convey your ability to get through that much material without failing. You do not get do drop classes in medical school if you are struggling.

I can't speak based on my experience of getting into med school (since I haven't), but if you are in bad shape then I'm in REALLY bad shape.

I mostly took one course at a time (usually 3 credits). I worked full-time, part-time and traveled for work.

From the advice I've been given, I think it's more important to do well than anything else. A good GPA and strong MCAT will speak to what you can handle. I know I can take 32 credits full-time and I'm certain you can too.

I'll know over the summer/fall of 2013 if Adcoms agree.

I've known a few people who did postbac taking 2 courses a semester that have gotten in, but they were all working full-time. a good GPA and MCAT are much more important than courseload and you seem to be doing a lot, volunteering, research, work - this all looks excellent, so I wouldn't worry

Great question, OP. I hadn't even considered this and will have a schedule similar to yours.

Good question. From the perspective of my advisor (for what it's worth) it depends on if you have taken heavy course loads in the past and done well, especially sciences. If you have shown this, it's probably not as big of a deal. I'm in the same boat taking two prerequisites with labs which totaled to 12 credits plus doing ECs. For me personally taking another class to prove myself isn't worth the risk of a grade drop. Hopefully that pays off 😳

hi there !!! Where did you take formal post-bac . I work full time and was looking for evening post bac program. I live in Virginia and I take classes in community college in the evening but would prefer formal post-bac program.
