Is it ok to take a class or two pass fail?
i.e. if I wanted to take a language just to really learn it and not worry about the grade, does that look bad?

Yes, it's absolutely fine to take a couple of classes pass/fail because you're interested in them. It would be bad to take something like required calculus or chemistry pass/fail. But if you think you might be interested in a language, it sounds like a fine idea, it gives you the chance to try it out and broaden your horizons without possibly hurting your GPA.

Then again, a lot of intro classes are pretty easy, and provide nice GPA boosts, so make sure you don't P/F a class that's an easy A.

I took Mandarin and Spanish this year. Spanish for a grade, Mandarin P/NP.
