past residency program and personal statement

I was in resideny before. Is it a must to include in my personal statement about how i left the program, what happened, etc. or can i just state that in my ERAS application, and forget about these negative points in my personal statement? The personal statement seems to flow better without including program problems, etc.

Also, how much detail does another program want to know about past programs in the ERAS application (under 'reason for leaving')? How much should I tell?

You don't need to talk about your prior program in your PS at all. Your PS is for you to express to PD's something about yourself that's not elsewhere in the application. The PS clearly gives you the most room to use to talk about it.

You will need to disclose that you trained in programs prior, and that you left them. You can give as much or as little detail as you would like. An important issue is that your story match up with what programs say if they are contacted. If there is a big discrepancy, then PD's are unlikely to be able to figure out whom is telling the truth, and are likely to pass on you given the uncertainty. In your prior posts, you've made it clear that you and your former PD had a difference of opinion regarding your skills, and I might be clear about that in your description.

there are alot of subtle changes on the ERAS forms this year (wording, etc)... the previous training section clearly states

"Please include each residency, fellowship, and/or osteopathic internship you have completed or are currently in"
So.... I'm sure that there are quite a few folks out there who are also curious as to how to approach this.

If a candidate hasn't "completed" a residency or their intern year... (i.e. not getting credit for it)... must this be disclosed?


It's a matter of interpretation... Bottom line- technicality or disclosure?

i've always wondered the same thing. i just disclose because it is better to be safe than sorry. they may say my application is not complete if it isn't included.

I have the same question. I am starting a residency in my homecountry in the field I am applying to in October. I put it into residency and starting date October 2010 - May 2011 (that's how long my contract is). Is that right?

I thought it was only US based residency/internship? The residency/internship in our home countries should go under work experience section, or?

Many people list an international internship/residency in the residency section, and that's fine.
