For all of you who have taken the DAT already...

What study guide is the PAT most similar to?

Also, for TFE can you get away with just line counting? Or is it like achiever where they all have the same # of lines and the only diff. is dotted and solid.

Thanks

i found crack the pat most similar, esp in the TFE section, not so much in the cube counting section.

wat is the line counting technique?
i sux at TFE can u teach me?

The line counting thing works many times, but not always.

Umm...as for how to do this section...basically it seems harder than it is. So first, relax and don't get stressed. I remember when I was studying for this section, I couldn't get it for a long time. Whenever I would calculate my score I'd always assume these 15 question to be wrong!🙂

Anyways, if you have the Kaplan Blue Book or even an older Kaplan book, the PAT section is the same, I can try to walk you though a TFE questions.

Let's start w/ question 3 in the TFE Section.
T: Square w/ smaller square centered to the right.
F: Square w/ dashed line on top right corner.
Find End.

Before going on, let's really understand what this means. The way the top view is drawn, it's telling us that either something is indented into the figure or something is skicking out of the figure. To make it easier to imagine: either it's a solid cube (box) w/ something on top OR there is a piece cut away from the cube. Which one it is, we don't know for sure.

By looking at the front view we don't see anything on top of the box. We see dashlines, which tells us something was cut away from the box. If we cut something away from the box, what could the end view be? Should it have solid or dashed lines?

Okay, now let's take a look at the answer choices.

A) End View cannot be that because if we took that piece and placed it on the right side of the front view, it doesn't match the front view.

WHY: See how the End view shows a deeper rectangle, but the front view's dash line is not that deep. (I hope you understand what I mean by deep.) Look at it. Try to pick that piece up and place it on the right side. See how the lines doesn't match.

But, it does match the top view. WHY: If we took this piece and placed it to the right of the top view, they fit. Both have the solid lines that have the same width and are centered.

This answer is incorrect since it doesn't work for both of the views given.

B) We'll come back to.

C) We'll come back to.

D) Major clue is that it's dashed.

It fits the front view. It's centered. The deepth of the indent is the same.
It fits the top view. Both are centered and width is the same.
But it's still WRONG! WHY? Ask yourself if your should have a dashed line in the end view. Remember how we said that something is cut away from the box. Then the end view should have solid lines, not dashed.
Okay it's either B or C. Most people would jump for B.

B) It fits the top view kinda. It fits the front view kinda. But it still isn't the answer. WHY: the way the end view is drawn it's telling us that we took a cube and from the top we cut out a rectangle the entire lenth of the top of the square. But, that's not what are front veiw or top view tells us.

The top view say we cut out a cube from the top.
The front view again tells us that we cut a rectangle out and the deepth of it.

You see, we didn't cut that much away. This answer would be correct if there was a line drawn on top of B.

C) C = CORRECT! I hope you c why!

If not, here's the explaination. The top view width is the same and centered. Front view deepth is the same. Yes, it's a circle cut from the cube, not a square, but it would still give the same top and front views.

Hope that helps.

The Barrons DAT book explains this well. I used to suck at this too, but now I get a lot right with this technique...just go to Barnes and Noble or Borders and read that section only.:luck:
