I finally started looking into the bookes I have to study for the DATS. I have the big Kaplan book from 99. Why is there no PAT stuff in there?
Was there a supplementary book that I missed?
Also, why do they not go over reading comprehension except for the practice test?
Is there another book for this also?

Beagle,

That big thick Kaplan DAT book is strictly for the science review! There is a Kaplan DAT "WORKBOOK" that is supplement to the thick Kaplan Science review book that contains very little review information on the "reading comprehension" and the "PAT" sections. Again, this is the workbook, where you practice and answer questions, I personally did not find it hlepful at all for the reading and the PAT sections. Your best studying tool for these two sections is simply read scientific journals for the reading section and TOPSCORE CD for the PAT section. Also, the Kaplan DAT CD-ROM is extremely helpful as well for the PAT section! Happy studying!!!

Why do you suggest scientific articles?
Are all the reading passages on the DAT for reading comprehension science based?

I used to work for Kaplan and the majority of their practice stuff for the PAT is at their library on paper. However, I think the best practice is computer practice, because the angles especially were harder on computer than on paper. If you are a student of Kaplan they also have practice workshops on computer for the PAT. As for the reading comp. practice reading lengthy articles, even from like the Wall Street Journal. If you happen to get your hands on MCAT verbal reasoning that's good too. But they will definetly be harder than the DAT---good practice though.....Best of Luck!

Maybe others can attest to this, but I find the passages in the reading section is comparable to the words used in the scientific journal articles (not like in the scientific aritcle format, abstract, intro, materials, results, discussions).

My three passages for my DAT #2 were:

1) Diabetes Mellitus
2) Fatty Acid absorption
3) Clotting and Innate Immune System

Lots of big words and scientific names/ligual!

Also, I read the questions and search for the answers, I do not read whole passages! Test to see what works best for you! The passages are usually broken down into specific sections for certain info/topic. Usually each paragraph of that specific passage is a different topic for that theme.

I did not spend time studying for this section at all! I figured that since I search for answers (that works the best for me) instead of reading the passages, there's not much I can train myself to enhance my "searching" skills!

It's funny that, once I've found all the answers to the questions for the passages, I learned what the passages are all about at the end! I strongly feel that read "Q"s and search for "A"s is the best way for me!

DAT #1: 19 in reading
DAT #2: 23 in reading

When you took the DATS the second time, did you approach the reading section differently?
The first time you took it, did you read the passage, and hte second time, just look for the answers?
