hey what is the difference between both? i think both are asd?
nbme say that 20 to 30 percent have patent foramen oval so they have asd?
and in patient who have asd(primum or secondam) they must have a patent foramen ovale?(since blood enter the foramen the go to foramen secondum?

yes ASD is the bigger category....Ostium primum type (seen in Downs) is an example of ASD; Patent foramen ovale is another type that is typically seen in i think its like 20% of the pop and really becomes an issue if there was a R->L atrial shunt

ok if one has asd ( he should also have a patent foramen oval for blood to pass left to right or its closed isd(foramen sec or prim)???

I asked a pathologist and a cardiologist a similar question. They both said that PFO is not considered an ASD since it is a variation of normal. I think FA says VSD is the most common congenital heart defect. Obviously, PFO is more common.

VSD is the most common congenital defect, but usually spontaneously corrects itself with time, resulting in ASD being the most common defect in adults.
