I recently received a letter of rec from a community pathologist. He forwarded a copy to me (please note I did not ask him to do so), and although it seems very positive, I'm concerned about its shortness. I would appreciate any comments whether I should include this letter in my letter of recommendations for ERAS application. I'm expecting to be able to procure 2 other letters for pathology - one from my dept. chairperson, and one from a hematopathologist. So this letter isn't completely necessary. Nonetheless any comments would be most appreciated. Below is a verbatim copy of the letter minus identifying information:
"Letter of reccomendation:
Student has spent time this summer observing my work as a community hospital pathologist. He and I have explored the organization of our lab's clinical pathology as well as reviewing anatomic cases together.
I have been impressed with student's maturity, his diagnostic accumen and his fund of knowledge both in medicine in general and pathophysiology in particular. As we interacted over the cases, his questions and comments indicated an excellent foundation in pathology. His approach to my daily cases was methodical and sharply analytical.
I believe student is well suited for the specialty of pathology and I wholeheartedly recommend student for your pathology residency program.
signed,
Pathologist
Director of laboratory services
