Hey!

Been lurking on here for a while, and I know that this forum caters mainly to US audiences. Also, I've posted something similar on another board, but have received only a single reply. I was hoping someone can tell me what the current job market is like for pathologists in Canada?

First of all, is it difficult to find a job?

Is it like other specialties where there are shortages in under serviced areas, whereas there is a glut within larger cities? Are there even openings in under serviced areas, or are pathologists in Canada mainly tied to larger academic centers? Are there any private labs or "private practice" opportunities? Are most of these positions unadvertised as they are in the US?

What's the perceived trend for the near future? Is it likely there will be an increased need for pathologists? Or is there a feel of gloom and doom, as some have predicted about the U.S., for example?

Are generalist more sought after or subspecialists?

What's the median salary (especially starting out) for pathologists in Canada? Are most of these positions salaried, or is it fee-for-service based? Or is there some other reimbursement scheme? And just as an added aside: How about Australia or New Zealand?

Thanks,
pm

IIRC, a canadian pathologist starts at about 200-300K depending on quals which now with the exchange rate, isnt as crappy as it was 5 years ago.

May 29, 2017 - Pathologist Positions open in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. 1 AP/GP position with focus in Bone and Soft Tissue experience or Pediatric/Perinatal Pathology, also 1 position in GU Pathology. Both are permanent FT. Sponsor ship from Alberta Health Services is available. Must be eligible for College of Physicians of Alberta Licensing.

I don't get a feeling of doom here at least certainly nothing like I experienced in the U.S.A. Just Google Canadian pathology jobs and sign up for the daily alerts. There are regular openings Generally for AP/CP no sub speciality training although I am seeing more of that in the past few years. Pay varies by Province and like the U.S. usually lower on the coasts and higher in the cold interior low end would be 300k high end 700k.
Your U.S. credentials will allow you to practice, and you have 5 years to complete the Canadian board exam.

Immigration is frustrating but eventually gets done. Overall I'm very happy here but I can only speak for Manitoba.

Holy hell, why are people necro'ing threads so old? Student Doctor Necromancy the new theme or what?

Waiting now for someone to a necro something from 1939 and tell us it indeed it looks like turmoil is brewing in Europe!
