Not too surprised. Part of that is just the nature of our business - we don't interact with the patients, we just get specimens shipped to our lab from the ORs or outpatient offices. Docs that see patients can have the front desk tell a patient that they don't accept their insurance, and the patient will choose a different doctor that does. But with us the specimen is in our hands and we bill whatever insurance the patient has, in or out of network. No choice.

I have always thought just how much we would make if, like our clinical colleagues, we (or some kind of staff) saw the patient in an office and had a sign that said “payment is customarily due at the time of service”. It would be a massive increase in income.

If the damn academics would tighten our supply then we would have IMMENSE BARGAINING POWER AND RESPECT and instead of the big corporate sweatshops we would have the C student business majors begging us for a measly job and saying yes sir and yes ma’am when we present our list of demands!

Hell, here were are in the middle of a pandemic with lab testing in the news DAILY. It is our moment and where are the Pathologists to combat the daily negativity? Nowhere to be found. Our field is doomed. We have failed miserably and are letting others fill the vacuum. There are no dynamic people in our field and most patients want the cheapest lab they can find.
