I've browsed through old threads about pathology books, but I'm still really confused and don't know what to get.

I'd like to get 1 textbook and 1 review book, I've found that that really works for me. Our school is recommending either Rubin or baby Robbins. And I've read good things here about BRS Path and Goljan Rapid Review. I was thinking about getting Baby Robbins and one of the review books, is that enough? Or do I need to get big Robbins? Big Robbins + Baby Robbins + a review book seems excessive...

Thank you so much!

Robbin's Basic Pathology + Robbin's Review (question book) + RR Path

Robbin's Pathologic Basis of Disease (Biggest Robbins)
+ any review book that suits you.

Don't bother with robbins, baby or big. Robbins review is excellent, however, and I'd recommend it whole-heartedly if you like doing questions (who doesn't?). But Rapid Review pathology should be your bible for path. That and your course pack are all you really need. I'd also recommend using Webpath (if you don't know what that is, just google "webpath" and it'll be the first link).

But seriously, you really do not need to use robbins. I know all the path residents rave about it and you see a lot of people on sdn who insist that you can't get a good foundation without it. That's bs in my opinion.

I'm one of those people that swears by Robbins, but that may be because our course notes are so terrible.

Rapid review is still my path bible though.

Robbin's Basic Pathology + Robbin's Review (question book) + RR Path
👍! If you use RR path from the beginning of Pathology, it will help you tremendously for boards and to really outline what is the very important stuff. I do use big Robbins though instead of the Basic. I could probably do with Basic instead though - big robbins is a long read 🙂

First of all, follow the recommendations for texts from your school. There isn't much difference between Rubin and Robbins but don't purchase Rubin if your school uses Robbins.

If you have completed Pathology and have good notes, any of the review books should be fine. I found BRS to be more that what I needed but I had an excellent Pathology course at my medical school that I honored. If this is not you then ask upperclassmen for their recommendations.

If you are looking for a review book for your Path course, I would strongly recommend against this. No review book is sufficient for coursework. You need to learn the material in the first place before you can review it.

hmmm I didn't realize there were 3 different robbins!

Thanks for your input, I still can't decide since everyone has such different opinions! I guess I can always get robbins basic pathology + a review book and get big robbins later if I feel like I need it.

One other question - is Goljan Rapid Review equivalent to robbins basic pathology? Because I thought it was a review book but amazon says it's 656 pages - that's a lot more than BRS pathology!

Thanks so much 🙂

Thanks! My school is telling us to get either Robbins or Rubin, not suggesting one over the other, otherwise this would be much easier 🙂

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I'm not looking for just a review book, I'd like one textbook and one review book. I find the review books have really helped me with studying for exams in other courses.

Big Robbins is probably the best reference textbook, the Robbins question book is great for Step 1, as is BRS pathology.

Just 3 Robbins. Big&thick hardcover text, big paperback question book, half-sheet-size outline book (baby).

There is no PERFECT book for path. It all depends on the person and study techniques.

Ask people at your school is best way to figure this out. Each path course taught slightly diff, and you need to know the specific requirements to get your honors.

If you're concern is more about Step1, then read the back of First Aid for the books' ratings and comments.

Google it and ye shall receive

There are 4.

Papa Robbins: Huge. "Pathologic Basis of Disease"
Mama Robbins: Very large. "Robbins Basic Pathology"
Baby Robbins: Just right (imo). "Pocket Companion to Pathologic Basis of Disease"
Question Book: Robbins Review (also very helpful)

Edit: I guess 5 if you count the Atlas, but I wouldn't recommend that unless you will be specifically tested from it.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Mama Robbins.

 ROFL. I heard about baby, but never the others referred as papa and mama. But I quite like it.

In my experience, I've seen most ppl use papa, baby, and questions.
