Pathology Residency in NYC

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know Lenox Hill, St. Lukes-Roosevelt, and NYU are FMG friendly. All of the FMGs at NYU have TONS of publications and basic science research though. I know that Columbia, Mt. Sinai, and Cornell have only taken American grads for the past two years or more. I think Einstein might have some FMGs in the PGY-1 class as well. Also, I think that NYC is more friendly to FMGs than other cities because the majority of the city's population is immigrants. I hope this helps!

Neither St. Lukes or Lenox Hill have much research, but St. Lukes has a dermpath fellowship. Lenox Hill has a really small program (like 2 spots a year) which they filled out of the match last year. So... if you are interested in them you should email them in advance. I met one of the residents from there last year at a NY Path Symposium. He seemed like a pretty smart dude and he really liked the program. I think he was from South Africa. St. Luke's has a bigger program, and it is considered academic. I have heard that they have nice housing and that the pay is better than the other NYC programs. I don't know much about the teaching there, but I had a buddy who interviewed there last year and he was impressed by the extra perks the program offered. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

St. Vincent's has not had a residency program for years. I don't know why they are still on Frieda. Or at least that's what a friend of mine told me when she called there. I know nothing of Valhalla. I do know that the Long Island Jewish Hospital program is supposed to be pretty good. Also, I think the North Shore/NYU program is pretty good as well. I didn't interview at these programs but a department chair from a major academic institution mentioned them a fews times to me in conversation. Only good things were said. SUNY downstate has VERY VERY BAD facilities. Plus they have no volume. They do have a good CP program, but AP is more important for employment reasons. AP is not so good there. I hate to be negative, but that's reality. I would just apply to all of these programs and see what happens. If you get interviews at most of these places, you will see the difference for yourself. It is usually pretty obvious what programs are good and which ones to stay away from. Look at volume! Especially for the LI and community programs.

Double check on St. Lukes because I think they may have changed their affiliation with Ackerman. I'm not sure if they have dermpath anymore.

They don't have a program anymore. Ackerman's program is affiliated with SUNY downstate.

Thanks for the clarification. I have heard great things about Dr. Wenig the new chair at St. Lukes. He is a famous head and neck pathologist and a very nice man.

Ackerman's fellowship prog. in dermpath is separate, but affiliated with both St. Luke's-Roosevelt and Beth Israel Med Cent. so path residents can do electives there.

I am a FMG and I interviewed at Long Island an Suny Brooklyn last year. So these programs are very much FMG friendly.

Definately try NYU. Their program is at least 90% asian.

The Ackerman Academy of Derm now has a new academic affiliation with SUNY Downstate (Brooklyn)- dermatology and path programs
