I am not sure if I want to do EM or not once I get through school, but it is definitely on my list of specialties to consider. Other's I am considering are pathology, radiology, invasive cardio, ENT, anesthesia, rad/onc, gastroenterology, urology, hem/onc, ophtho, derm, pulmonology or nephrology. Other than those, either the hours suck too much, they are boring or the pay is too low to bother with for the amount of crap you have to deal with.

I got bitten by the EM bug after my 1st semester of med school. I'd already found out that I didn't like looking through a microscope (which wiped out my original thoughts of pathology) and learned through shadowing that I'd rather gouge my eyes out than go into IM (which was my other original front runner).

Fortunately, I signed up to shadow an EM doc & I immediately fell in love with the specialty. Nothing else I've done since has even come close for me. 😀

question for those applying for residency or in residency:

at what point in time did you know that you wanted to go in EM, and how many wanted to do it from your first year in school on?

just curious..thanks

Still not SURE, but it's been a consideration for years. More and more I am discovering that I am made for EM from what I read (still working on shadowing...wish people would ANSWER THEIR E-MAILS) or maybe it was made for me. MS1 currently 🙂

When are you getting one of the new dual core machines? Those laptops look pretty sweet (although the name is seriously dorky...it sounds like I should be ordering fries with it).

I'm going to wait til next year. Will probably get a Power Mac dual dual-core system, 30" monitor, and replace my 12" Powerbook with a new MacBook Pro.

Supposedly Apple is discontinuing the 12" professional notebooks. What a shame. I like the small, compact size. It makes it very easy to tote around for those who travel frequently.

Started Med school and thought about Ortho 1st.. Did anatomy scrapped ortho, thought Gen Surg or EM.. I randomly did some EM research, really liked EM then I did Gen Surg and it made it clear to me that EM was for me.

I decided EM or GSurg near the end of 1st yr.. I always leaned to EM. Then I decided on EM for sure during 3rd yr..

Uh, yea, I do travel that often. I usually average a flight per month. I do a lot of weekend getaways. If I have a golden weekend, I'm usually out of town.

Sorry about the lack of +pad+ing Lots of errands and stuff.

Yeah, so I didn't go to bed, and instead spent $200 at bluefly.com. But, but, if they hadn't been on sale I would have spent $600 (which really means I would have spent NOTHING!). It was all one price for shipping, so I figure I will return what doesn't fit. Let's hope that not many pairs of jeans fit!!

Yeah, I dont know about all you guys.. but I like Off 5th.. great clothes sometimes dirt cheap. Didnt find much to buy only cause I dont know if I will be in a cold climate next yr or (as I hope) somewhere warm.. Why buy clothes that I will then have to move and might not have to wear! I have enough for now!

So long boring flight tomorrow and my DVD player on the laptop doesnt work. I dont know what I will do to stay busy.. Maybe study for Step 2 CS? YUCK!

learned through shadowing that I'd rather gouge my eyes out than go into IM

To quote someone on here, IM is a "run screaming into an industrial fan specialty". Others include family practice, OB/GYN, pediatrics, and a few others.

Just had to get in my post pad for the day.

I am definitely excited to see 3000!

You have hit on one of my pet peeves about the US medical system- having to choose a specialty before you even get a chance to explore what is available! In the UK (not exactly a great medical system for sick people, but great for relatively healthy people), you rotate through several "jobs" before you decide. You can even change different hospitals. The 3rd years seem to be pulling their hair out over deciding right now.

I wanted EM all throughout my medical school career(hence me posting). I absolutely HATED rounding in internal medicine, but I ended up in IM, and feel it is the right place for me. It is very different as a resident. I still hate the rounds with the whole team, but there are other pluses to make up for it. I love critical care (we take over where you leave off!), and never would have found it had I not been thrown in where I thought I didn't want to be.

I'm not trying to convert anyone. Just saying keep your eyes open to all possibilities.

All I have to say is: why does our team's fight song sound like it belongs on an OB unit?

"Bear down, Chicago Bears, make every play clear the way to victory;
Bear down, Chicago Bears, put up a fight with a might so fearlessly.
We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T-formation.
Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you're wearing the crown.
You're the pride and joy of Illinois, Chicago Bears, bear down."

That or it deserves to be played in the bathroom of someone with inadequate fiber intake......

I woke up this morning to the people above me having a knock-down-dragout. UGH. I want to KILL this stupid lady (her b/f doesn't live there). She makes so much f-ing noise when I'm tyring to SLEEP.

The irony of it all is that I don't rent!!!!!!!!!! It's a condo and I OWN MINE!

Sux.. Do you rent. We have had a problem with someone in my condo as well. Sux.. Quiet guy but he smokes.. and it bothers the living you know what out of my neighbors.. I just hope he isnt smoking when we try to sell!

You know what else sucks? My travel coffee mug is in the car, 'cause I'm a lazy ass. And because I'm a lazy ass I don't feel like going to get it...but if I don't I will be without coffee ALL DAY (except for this cup right now) because I MUST STUDY TODAY (and I can't study in my apartment)!

I am sure you will eventually gather the necessary energy to make this happen! Rough..

Your daughter is the CUTEST THING EVER!

Thank you..... 🙂 We think she's pretty darn spiffy (to quote my fiancee)

Now back to our regularly scheduled post-padding +pad+
