I have a problem with two of the pattern folding questions in the practice test of Kaplan's 08-09 DAT book.

If you have the book. I'm talking about questions 4 and 6 on page 553. If not, here are the links:

and

Take a second to figure out the answers before moving ....

According to the book, the answer for 4 is D and 6 is C.

For 4, I can get both A and D. For 6, I can get both A and C.

So for 4, keeping the middle white rectangle in place. If I fold the rest back into the page, I get D, but if I fold everything else out of the page, I get A.

The same way, for 6, if I keep the white square in place. I get A if I fold everything else out of the page while I get C if I fold the rest into the page.

Do you guys see what I'm talking about or is my brain tripping out?
If I'm right, I'm guessing this kind of thing doesn't really happen on the actual DAT, right? Does it happen to any of you guys in the practice DATs or the actual one?

ok i see what you're doing...
you can not fold the pattern upwards
you have to fold it down
the pattern is only on ONE side..you have to fold the paper into the page

Ok so if the pattern is only on one side of the paper and not underneath it, that would make life so much easier with these questions, but how come that is not mentioned in the directions of the DAT or the in the kaplan book at all. Did you just assume that you can't do that or you read it somewhere? 'cause that's a pretty big deal.

yea i know it's confusing.. i made the same mistake at first.. but i took the kaplan course and i was told that by the instructor.
also, even if it's not specifically mentioned in the directions, you can't just assume that the pattern is on both sides.

These are the directions:

Pattern Folding:
In question 3 a flat pattern will be presented. This pattern is to be folded into a three dimensional figure. The correct figure is one of the four given at the right of the pattern. There is only one correct figure. The outside of the pattern is what is seen at the left.

Ok I see it in mine too now. "the pattern at the left represents the outside of the figure."

That just made that section much easier. nice.
