When you look at the flat pattern you may think that you can fold it into the page so that what you see is on the outside, or you may fold it out of the page, to get the mirror of that. Folding it out of the page is incorrect, as what you're now looking at is the underside of the pattern facing outside. If it helps, imagine you're looking at an actual piece of foldable paper. What you see is the top side, and what's underneath is just white. Or black. Or some rainbow swirly pattern. If you fold in, you get a proper shape with patterns outside. If you fold out, all you get is something bad.
