Could someone explain the concept of PBL. How is it different from lectures? Do you like it better than lectures, etc, etc.

You walk into a class with a group of anywhere from 7-12 students (depending on the school). They hand you a case (here's an overly simplified one)

ex. a 25 y.o female walks into the ER with pain in the upper right quadrant of her abdomen. She has rebound tenderness..yada yada...

Her temperature is 102 degrees, her blood pressure is 140/90
she is sweating profusely, and her pulse is 24bpm.

A blood test reveals elevated white blood cells, etc.

You do some research and discuss the case.

hey ucla2000,

you guys at upenn, is it a mix of traditional and pbl, mostly pbl, how would describe the curriculum? like say, relative to cornell, where they were in lecture maybe 10 hours a week, how often are you in lecture?

not that, ya know, penn is interviewing me yet or anything
