What are the pluses and minuses for a newish PharmD between a hybrid staffing nid sized hospital and a clinical pharmacist phm job that requires guideline creation and customer support. Thank you.

I can't speak to hospital positions, but I can speak to PBM a bit.

Pharmacist roles within a PBM can very greatly and I think it's important to know that and to understand what you're applying to.
  • PBM - Insurance side:
    • There are positions that make you a essentially a phone rep, where you have specific times to be on the phone, while also completing other tasks in many cases. Some of these are member/patient facing, some of these are internal department facing.
    • There are positions where you may counsel members/patients.
  • PBM - Mail Order / Specialty:
    • Dispensing
    • They also have call centers where you may need to either counsel members/patients, or work with internal teams.
Other things I can think of:
  • MTM is also a big movement in the PBM world.
  • Investigative / Fraud / Waste / Abuse
  • Quality Control
  • I am sure there are more, but I don't work near those areas..
Many of these are sit-down jobs. Might sound fancy except those are the ones usually tied to a desk and phone.

(That's all I can think of. It's only 8:33AM and I haven't had nearly enough coffee yet.)

I know you have sent me several messages inquiring about PBM positions. Were you offered both positions? How do you see your pharmacy career in the future? What was your ideal position when you went to pharmacy school?

We can give you the day to day activities of both jobs, but at the end of the day, you need to decide where you see yourself in the future?

I did look at the position you sent me for the PBM job and I couldn't see a company hiring a new grad for the position, but managed care surprises me everyday. The position you sent me was my first PBM job when I started down this path. I had several years of clinical hospital and retail behind me, but this is what I knew I wanted to do so I tried to gain as much experience I could to be able to apply for those types of positions.
