I'm looking to buy a new laptop since my desktop is on its last legs. I can't wait to find which D-school (if any) I'll be going to and what computer requirements they may have. I was initially thinkg PC but co-workers are persuading me to get a Mac.

So what is your preference? PC or Mac?

Ever since the Intel switch, all the computer whizzes including me have been preferring Macs. Their OS foundation is much more solid than Windows due to its Unix-based core. Main problem is if you're completely broke, it's only a dream away.

I agree. If I had money, I'd buy a mac.

i randomly picked a mac last year when i got my first laptop since then all of my roommates and their boyfriends and mine have bought macs too. theyre not as "confusing" as everyone makes them out to be.

Well, the poll seems to be 50/50 so far which corroborates the poll I took at work. The major difference I found in opinion was that when I asked people WHY they chose one over the other, the people who chose PC mainly gave the reasoning that they grew up using them and are comfortable using them, so why change; the people who chose Mac had typically owned a PC before, got fed up with them for being slow, freezing, and crashing, so they got a Mac and would never think of going back.

The hardware isn't that important. You should ask OSX, Windows, or Linux?

I'd go with Linux. Free and it works. Ubuntu is particularly easy to set up.

When you buy a Mac, your absolutely paying for a quality product. It's a worthwhile investment. I've had my Mac since november, and the saying is true, "once you go mac, you don't go back"!

Well, I have both a PC and a Mac. My desktop PC broke a few days ago, and I don't think i'm going to buy a new hard drive and reinstall Windows- it's just not worth it! I have a Mac laptop- (Powerbook G4 12") and it's amazing. I was die hard PC for awhile- and I switched- never going back! Good Luck!

i dont like macs. not open source programming. everything is in a propritery format. its not a great environment for programming. you cannot extract nbh rom files. nor create firmware utilities. (the list goes on)

It really isnt for me. i do like final cut studio and their hardware design is great. Like 997GT3 said with intel architecture its a good buy even if you do want to switch to windows.

I SECOND THAT

i agree

for those people who think mac is a better quality than pc
the statement itself is misleading, it is like comparing apples to oranges

there's only one company that makes mac (apple), but there's hundreds of companies that makes pc laptops, you just have to know which brand is better than the others

I personally would go for asus laptops, it's one of the largest laptop manufacturer in the world.
and it is the one that actually manufacture macbook

Mac OS X is better than Windows. That's the comparison people are making, not between Apple and the Dell's and Toshiba's or whatever.

I'm posting this on my iBook G4 and I am a Mac lover. The only thing that would ever cause me to buy a PC is if I get accepted to a school that does not use Mac compatible programs.

Soooo, you may want to find out which school you'll be attending and what will make your life easiest while you're there.

It was my understanding that the longstanding software compatibility issue with Macs is resolved now that you can run Mac OS X side-by-side with Windows. Have you found this to be true? Do you purchase the software separately? Is is wicked expensive?

Also, I am perplexed by the fact that most of the responses are pro Mac yet PC is dominating the poll. PC lovers... any specific reasons?

yes, my MacBook Pro can run any program you throw at it. In fact, I can load up a virtual machine on top of Mac OS X that loads within a few seconds just to run a few programs I need.

mac costs more than it's real value
it is just too overpriced for such kind of hardware specs

PC hardware is manufactured in higher quantities and cheaper than Mac stuff. Many more hardware options are available for PC than for Mac.

The PC's only problem is that the most popular operating system is Windows. It is POS software if there ever was such a thing - unreliable, full of security holes, patched by daily band-aids- a total disaster.

A PC running Linux has all the advantages of Mac OSX which, like Linux, is based on Unix. The variety of programs for Windows PCs is far greater than for Macs or Linux. This is why I have to dual boot between Linux and Windows. Some apps just aren't available for Linux yet.

A program called Wine allows some windows software to run under Linux, but it is not for beginners.

agreed. another computer guy speaks.

I don't see Mac computers selling in Best Buy, Office Depot, Circuit City, Office Max, ... Which stores actually carry them?😕

Apple Retail Stores or Apple.com. Make sure you get it through educational discount to get $200 off instantly (and free iPod nano)

I believe COMP USA carries some models too, but not sure about student discounts there.
