Anyone have any recommendations regarding PC programs that one can use to make scientific figures (for publication). Ideally, one that's free and easy to use.

thanks in advance!!

Well, I was going to say MatLab. Do you have Office Excel? That's always an easy option.

I've always used Excel and changed the figures into grayscale; I've never had a journal complain about them

What type of figures? If histograms, just use excel. Powerpoint is good for schematics; Gimp works well too if you're got a little more time to invest.

Thank you all for the suggestions!! I should have specified the type of figures, they are mostly images (retina/fundus photos), visual fields, etc. Basically something that would let me crop images, resize them, flexibility to move/arrange images, adjust brightness/hue/contrast/etc..

Here's an example of what the end product might look like

thanks again for all your help!!!

My old lab used GraphPad Prism. I thought it worked ok.

It sounds like you're just needing to manipulate images though (rather than do any sort of data analysis), so why not just use something like Photoshop?

Mmmmm, I'd say Photoshop, which is neither free nor easy to use. Do you have any friend who are graphic designers/architects/really good with computers? Maybe try and get all your images together, and ask if they can help you make a meta-image. It'll take them about 5 minutes versus taking you about five hours, plus they probably already own photoshop.

Thanks again guys/gals for all ur help!!!

I've never used photoshop, I'll call in some favors!

thanks!

Gimp is probably easier for what you're trying to do, and it's free.
