PCCM 2008 Match Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ive been to one already. The day started at 8:30 and ended at 2:30pm. I toured the hospital with the 3rd year fellow and then interviewed with 4 doctors. They asked the typical questions on the residency trail. Weakness/strength, research interests, etc. The program director asked me some questions but mainly he talked about upcoming developments and the program. The day was rather pleasant. I could have done better dodging those questions but it was my first one!

Got rejections from MUSC and Ohio State. Am wondering if more calls are on the way, and whether all/most dates will have been taken by then?! Has anyone already interviewed? If so, please share your experiences.
I don't start interviewing until March, so I'm in the dark too. 😕

As for whether more interviews are coming, I can't help but be optimistic. There are obviously a lot of programs that none of us have heard from either way yet, so unless we're just a poor cross section of applicants and there are a bunch of people somewhere out there who have already heard from New York City programs, etc, there must be responses yet to be made.

Does anyone know which PCCM programs give out of match positions?
I would particularly like to know about

MUSC
Drexel
Wayne state
Caritas St Elizabeth
UT-memphis

Thanks!!

Emailed CLeveland clinic & Yale .. both said they are still reviewing applications....

anyone from or knows about dc programs? i believe there are 3 going for match including georgetown, GW and WHC. how competitive are they and how many spots they have each year? how about where their fellows come from? they have very limited information on their websites.
I've heard about several of the programs.
1. Georgetown: Run of the mill top # program, lots of research, and that's their #1 priority. If you want to enter academic medicine then this should be your number 1 of the three.
2. GW: A balance of clinical and research. Fellows have some flexibility in their training, and can tailor the curriculum to fit either track.
3. WHC: Clinical Program. Great educational experience, but is very clinically oriented. Good if not great hospital, and overall produced good clinical pulmonologists. (did I say clinical enough?)

BTW have yet to hear from the one I applied to, which is WHC.

Just wanted to list what I have found to date, and would like others to do the same.

1. http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/6701.html
AMA website on interviewing which focuses on the residency
interview process.
2. http://www.residencyandfellowship.com/page7.html
Yet again focused primarily on residency interview. Overall, a decent list
of questions.
3. http://www.rushu.rush.edu/studentlife/career/medint.html
Organized very well. Easy to read, but yet again focuses on residency.

If anyone has found a website that is specific to fellowships, and well organized then please post it.
Thanks

How do I delete this second post?

just wondering has anyone applied in Critical Care only? any int's yet?

i have applied to 10 some progs...still waiting...

I would ask around prior to pursuing this field. It seems that there are issues with having critical care certification alone, which ultimately limits your ability to find a job.
Just an FYI. This information was given to me by a PCCM physician who started his career by receiving CCM certification from a program in New York.

So, the principal complaint that I've heard is that you are not qualified to provide all services required for the on call Intensivist. Essentially they need to have a pulmonologist to back you up, and provide coverage for bronchoscopies. Maybe that was specific to NYC, but it was enough for the MD I know to go back for pulmonary.

Who knows? Maybe the CC MD can do those procedures now, but I would try to see how employable you would be in your region. Just BS some hospitals. State you are interested in a job, and have CCM certification alone. See if they will pay you as an intensivist or just boost your IM salary by 15K.

Congrats Arsa, You seem to be a on a roll!
More rejections for me. Wayne State and SLU (Visa issues).
Looks like the NY programs have finally started sending out calls.

getting kind of nervous. 1 more rejection today but feel as though the curtains are drawing.....🙁

calls? as in telephone calls? 🙂 i hope so because i think i listed my cell on my application. no landline here. hmmmmm it's just weird to see who they invite and who they don't blah. my own program hasnt even extended me an invitation yet! 😛

I just took the time to withdraw my application from the rest of my "reach" programs. I used the forum to see who had given out interviews during december, and then I withdrew myself from those programs. The way I look at it, if they have already sent out applications for 4-6 weeks then I'm not a strong applicant for their program.

Withdraw ??? Probably you have too many choices with you getting lot of interviews.. I would go even if they call me in May, They can't judge enough from ur application ..maybe things will be different when you meet, and u can probably convince them that u are the best.

howz the program? got a call today by email.

I heard its good program, I know lot of FMG'S doing residency there. Galveston is nice place to leave too , right next to the ocean. I didnt apply there , they have two positions only, didnt want to go fly all the way to houston for this interview.

Does anybody know if there are other discussions forums for fellowship, I think its just few of us here, where s rest of the world who s applying for fellowship?

I got one from UT Galveston too 🙂 Heard it's a nice place to live.

Guessing it is getting late but anyone heard anything one way or another from these programs? UCSF, Seattle, Harvard, Northwestern or Duke?

Have heard news from: Alabama, UPENN, BU, Colorado, UNC, Wake Forest, Emory, UChicago, and Vandy.

Thanks and good luck to all.

so far 5 invites: BU, Wayne, Michigan, MUSC and Cleveland
and 5 rejections: Baylor, Uchicago, Penn, North carolina, Ohio State

It is my deepest hope that programs AT LEAST start getting in touch with us soon, one way or the other! (applied to 35 and know only about 10 of them?!)

The problem is the anxiety that uncertainty generates....

Why does this repeat our messages? I double post, and cannot delete. Anyone know how?

The interviews you have at cleveland clinic, michigan, & boston univ are great. I'm starting to notice a trend, which is the research/competitive university programs are responding now.

I think the other programs are waiting before sending out applications to ensure that those who respond are going to 1) show up for their interview and 2) rank them highly on match day. (A reasonable stance)

Me, I'm currently interviewing at far more university programs than clinical programs when I would rather have a nice mix. I'm treating this like an investment portfolio, and to diversify my portfolio I would like to interview at 60% university (20% small programs, 40% large), & 40% clinical (20% university affiliated, 20% community).

FYI: I'm pulling these numbers out of the region just medial and inferior to the pyriformis muscle.😀

Anybody has an idea of good resources like books, websites etc for interview preparation? I won a 100 dollar certificate for amazon recently and want to utilize it for interview preparation. Partly trying to undo the bad residency interview prep that I had.

Also any short and succint Pulmonary and/ critical care books?

I've purchased the following
1. ICU Book: Marino
Ok text, sort of written like the Dubin's EKG book. The reason I say this is not to say that it uses the exact format of Q/A, but rather how it breaks down topics to the minute detail then builds your understanding from their. Ok, but sorta long.

2. Washington Manual Subspecialty Series
I liked this text, but its a little too short/succinct. Not enough details. Still, a good review for interviews where you feel they may pimp you.

3. Felson's principles of chest roentgenology (hate that word)
THE DUBIN's of Chest X-rays. Very good little text, but not directly PCCM. ( I love it! Recommended by a radiology resident who used it while he was a prelim intern)

4. Current PCCM (did not buy)
Written by very good professors at Univ of Colorado. Similar in content to the Wash Subspecialty, and I skimmed the two and chose WMSS. Why? I honestly chose it because the font/format was more appealing to me. Content very similar.

I have interview at UW, but still haven't heard from UCSF/Harvard. Didn't apply to Northwestern/Duke.

I dont know about other programs , but my program (Univ affiliated community) has already interviewed around 15 people. They started interviews in 2nd week of Jan even earlier than university programs. There is good competetion this year with 6 internal candidates applying for 3 positions including Chief resident and research fellow.
So its hard to predict if community programs are sending interviews or not.

Interview from University of Iowa by email 🙂

congrats..heliox. seems like a good one.

do you know how many slots they have in Galveston this yr? and how many internal candidates?

With 9 ivs now, I now want quality interviews from good places. So far MUSC, VCU, Drexel, UTMB, Wayne are my better ones. Unsure if they are really that great though.

Haven't heard from any of these dudes either (though didn't apply to all). Did get an interview from Rochester today. I have 6 lined up now, and it's actually beginning to be kind of a problem. I don't have the money for 8 or 10 interview trips, nor the ability to take that kind of time off from my own program. I'm going to have to start sorting. 😕

Haven't gotten confirmation yet.

Glad to see that interviews are rolling in for ppl. I think we still have a couple weeks where we can expect interviews. 🙂
